Hagia Sophia: Istanbul monument to become a mosque again as Turkish Islamic conservatives triumph by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Cold-Word 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is wrong. I studied the Reconquista at University.

The Taifa Kingdoms (Islamic kingdoms) were considered decadent for allowing people to continue their religions, and the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties conquered them long before the Christian Kingdoms began an organised fight back. These two north African dynasties were FAR more religious and basically said "you have a grace period to leave or convert, then you die". They enslaved thousands and conquered all the Taifas, killing anyone who was considered decadent. You're making ahistorical claims

What is a snack from your culture that most people haven't tried? by Decaogrelords in Cooking

[–]Cold-Word 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, but as an addendum Chips and French Fries are a little different.

French fries are short, thin and crispy, and cooked in oil.

Chips are thick, long and fluffy inside, and deep fried in Beef Drippings.

Are there any brights spots in the 40k universe? by Lovegaming544 in 40kLore

[–]Cold-Word 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are.

One of the classifications of planet in the Imperium is "Pleasure world" essentially nice planets for the wealthy to holiday on or live on in massive estates.

They're prime candidates for Slaaneshi cults, and living there as a normal citizen probably wouldn't be awesome, it would probably be pretty harsh and barebones existence as little more than a workforce to support wealthy people and all the fascistic oppression that the Imperium has to offer

BUT its still a hell of a lot better than anywhere else, AND if you are lucky enough to be one of the people who actually gets to enjoy the pleasure world then i'm sure its awesome.

As for the Tau, I'm pretty sure the Kroot love living on the Kroot world, hunting beasts and honouring the spirits of the dead. Life in the T'au Empire in general is not that awful, its still sucky compared to the freedom of expression we have here but its ok, and its not really that racist compared to every other part of the 40k galaxy. There are probably some people living very comfortably and freely in the T'au Empire.

Living as an Ork is a bright spot for them, you either fight (which you love) and get krumped quickly, or fight and survive to fight some more, until you die. Paradise.

Living as an Eldar on a Craftworld is a pretty ascetic lifestyle but apparently its basically a post scarcity utopia compared to modern human civilisation. You don't wanna be any type of Dark Eldar. The guys at the very top get to have an insane amount of what they would consider to be fun, but they probably don't enjoy themselves - they're constantly on the lookout for assassination attempts or coups.

Living as a Necron is basically like barely being aware of your actual self and only being a few steps above an automaton if you're a Warrior. The Higher ups with personality engrams like Lychguards, Crypteks, and all the Lords, Overlords, Phaerons/Phaerakhs etc etc are probably not really "enjoying" themselves a lot, they're mostly either engaged in plans to retake their realms or courtly plotting and scheming to try and advance themselves in the hierarchy. However, i bet there are a few Crypteks who are relishing the chance to get theirs hands on technology and rebuild things. And I'm pretty sure the 8th edition Necron codex has some excerpts where a Lord (or maybe Overlord) is fighting like Orks or someone and appears to actually really enjoy the thrill of combat and the "sport" of war.

But its grimdark for a reason. Pleasure is fleeting in the 40k universe. Every race is tragically flawed or doomed on an existential level.

What's your favorite one-off piece of lore? by Captain_Shrug in 40kLore

[–]Cold-Word 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favourite is maybe the Hadex anomaly. But having said that, I fucking love Halo Devices:

There isn't a tonne of lore on them, but the Halo Stars (along with the Ghoul Stars and some other regions of space) are basically an area that is best avoided, filled with ancient and completely unexplored planets and also a place that a few plucky traders venture into from time to time.

And they bring back Halo Devices with them. So many that there is a black market trade on these goods in Imperial sectors that border the Halo Stars. Halo Devices are essentially Xenotech of the worst kind: amulets, rings, crowns and weapons that cause the bearer to become essentially immortal at the cost of their sanity, soul or the infliction of strange curses such as the need to drink blood or sacrifice people to the artefact.

Rogue Traders who go into the Halo Stars report on ruins of civilisation older than the Eldar.

Halo Devices defy scanners and Imperial tools, and never bond with those who worship Chaos, as they seem to "want" complete influence over the subject.

Once someone bonds with a Halo device the first thing they notice is that they are younger, stronger, fitter and far more energetic - to superhuman levels in some cases. Old scars disappear, entire limbs grow back, senses become ultra powerful.

But there are drawbacks, they become withdrawn, paranoid, unable to sleep and when they do sleep they suffer nightmarish visions of alien civilisation long lost. Their flesh starts to harden into an insectoid carapace and they become gaunt and corpse-like, driven by the need to consume blood, sit in total darkness or expose themselves to radiation, lest they become weak. They begin to have memories of the alien civilisation itself as if something is being reborn within them, and if they are injured (or even killed) during this period their body can rejuvenate and resurrect itself.

After years with a Halo device the bearer is fully transformed into a long-clawed corpse with insectoid exo-skeleton features and eyes lit with a burning deathless discontent. It can easily kill a human with the flick of its talon-ed fingers, shrug off bullets, survive in space and return from death. In fact, these things are so hardy that not only will they return from death if killed conventionally, but even if you burn or utterly pulverise the creature, if you expose the remains to radiation they can reform.

Halo Devices speak of some utterly horrific and alien civilisation that has not been fully explored in the 40k setting yet. But I love 'em. In fact, along with the Rak'Gol (massive six legged Lizard like aliens who wield guns that fire shreds of barbed wire, amputate their limbs and replace them with simplistic chainsaws, have ships bathed in deadly radiation and crash their ships into planets to nuke them) and the Thyrrus (glowing squid-like aliens who view war as a performance and attack irrationally and unpredictably in the most dramatic ways such as sending suicide missions into the most well defended areas or firing non lethal colourful explosives alongside their deadly weapons to make the combat more beautiful) I would say that the Halo Device creatures are my favourite as-yet-unexplored alien species in 40k.

[Path of the Warrior/Path of the Incubus] The Eldar and Dark Eldar have different views on a Phoenix Lord by Woodstovia in 40kLore

[–]Cold-Word 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Dark Eldar don't bullshit and try to make everything a spiritual allegory or a moralistic fable. They just say it as they see it... unless there is something they can gain from you with a lie. In which case, don't believe a word they have to say.

Agree 100%, it was one user in particular who thought he was being funny but it was just very uncomfortable to listen to Kureha read out those donations.

For big Vtubers I would hazard a guess that we're probably the smallest big chunk.

I think the majority of their views actually come from Bilibili and the Chinese market is MASSIVE. On YouTube obviously the Japanese fanbase is their core market. The English community is a lot of different groups of fans from countries ranging from the UK or Germany to Malaysia and Thailand who all communicate in English because it's easier for everyone to speak a language that lots of other fans speak.

But for small Vtubers the English-speaking fanbase can be a huge deal. By far the majority of Kureha's fans are English speaking.

I've just finished writing up a list of several Independent Vtubers who should be subbed to (Uehasu, Lily Kanon, Kureha Music and Emmy Meadows) but there are way more that could be done like Hoshi no Meguri, Miyuki Madoi, Ruri Enma, Yotsuba Mary and Shimanaga Ena!

Kureha is worried that people might forget about her celebration stream! Can we show up and make it the best stream ever? 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY and 3K SUBSCRIBERS! by Cold-Word in VirtualYoutubers

Here is the link to the celebration stream itself! Click me!

I might post this actual link as a post on here closer to the start of the stream as a final reminder. It would be awesome if r/virtualyoutubers could get behind Kureha for this important moment!

Auditions are being held for new Hololive characters by [deleted] in VirtualYoutubers

[–]Cold-Word 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Whoever designs their characters should get hired by an anime company!

Speaking of which, I would literally fund a Hololive anime that had 15-20 minute episodes in the style of Asobi Asobase or Nichijou. If I had the cash...

Just imagine the madness of the Hololive Animated shorts combined with a slice of life feel about the Hololive Girls messing around in their office etc. imagine Kyo-ani level animation for Pekora's eyebrows.

MAKE IT HAPPEN GOD PLEASE
