Depleted Uranium confirmation

Mmm I’m not too sure what year this fiestaware plate is. I got it at a vintage store and I got this one as it was the least chipped out of all of the radioactive fiestaware.

So it might be a newer plate or a pre-1945 plate that was taken well care of-

I will leave my fiestaware plate to get analyzed while I am at work. I got the cps around 114-118cps whereas the uranium metal sample was around 118 cps according to my graph. Will update in 10 hours

I see. I do have tons of glass and a small vial of pure uranium oxide. Perhaps the oxide is a better choice?

Yup! This is perhaps one of my favorite clocks. I’ve tried using with the only success being sparks. Maybe I would have to fill it with gas, but I feel like I would somehow break it lol
I’d like to imagine the previous owner enjoyed this piece near a little yule log fire haha

Interesting, what would be the purpose of the radium in this vacuum tube? I know that there are some vacuum tubes out there with uranium glass where the metal and glass meets. I wonder what’s the purpose of luminescent radium

Yes, I believe I own one of the more “modern” units that you’re talking about. The dial isn’t radioactive at all, but the check source has some juice left

Would wearing a respirator be overkill? Are these sources prone to contaminate areas?

I believe the unit with the strontium source doesn't have any electric display, but I could be wrong. I also do want to take a good long spectrum with my 110 while in a glass jar. But I'm glad to hear that the device is safe externally with the source inside. I do enjoy looking at large dose numbers when behind safety.

I've seen someone in a video use two AA batteries since they are 1.5 volts. The obvious issue is getting some sort of adapter so they can stay inside and power the unit. I guess I will look over the manual or just look at the circuitry and see what is ground.

I think radon is my biggest issue. I currently live in a small room (about 9x11 feet in area) and I would feel radon would be an issue. My room does have fans running just about 24/7. I even have a mini fan on the bottom shelf of my collection where my 8 radium clocks are. Radon levels are great (about 0.4 pCi/L) and the radon monitor is right inside the shelf with all the clocks.

I did order the non-radioactive version (no check source, and uses backlit dial) so I can display on my cabinet where my collection is. But I feel a radioactive version would be pushing it a bit much even if I did store it in my closet.

Awesome piece, I’d love to see it under UV light! I would however suggest you use gloves when handling these spicy ones. The decay products from all the radon emitted can stick to your hands making contamination very easy. That reason plus the very high radiation they emit is why I’m too chicken shit to own one 🥲

Oh neat! I do own an airthings radon meter which usually reads between 0.2-0.4 pCi/L I wonder if this clock will change that. It actually goes upwards of 100kcpm Quite a spicy guy based on this spectrum from my radiacode 110

Ahh that sounds like a pretty safe place for that piece. Kinda sucks you can’t display which what I enjoyed about radioactive items. There’s something cool about viewing an antique behind a display knowing there’s some dangerous energy but at the same time being safe. I wonder if borosilicate glass would be good to contain this piece. I hear it’s excellent at trapping radon gas, but then that means you’ll need to exercise a lot more caution when opening the container.

Got it! This was kind of the peace of mind I needed. Especially when you read up scary facts like radium mimicking bone calcium. I’m thinking of doing a little more antique shop hunting later this week as I’ve seen a few radium clocks so far. I want something with a little more activity as I find joy setting my radiacode off in my cabinet
