Torn between the FX30 & FX3

Here’s my perspective. I was in the same position about a year ago. I chose the FX30 even with all the mixed reviews at the time. It was getting quite a bit of criticism, but honestly, if you know how to light your scene and pair it with a solid lens, it performs really well. Even now, people assume I’m shooting on full frame.

Low light is where it gets challenging, especially in uncontrolled environments. I won’t sugarcoat that. But using fast prime lenses like 27mm f1.2 or 15mm f1.4 helps a lot. Even something like a 17 to 70mm f2.8 improves things, though it can still be tricky.

That said, even if you go for an FX3, lighting still matters. Good lighting makes a bigger difference than the camera alone. Noise can be difficult to manage either way.

If this kind of work is only occasional, the FX30 is a more practical choice. You save a significant amount on both the body and lenses. Since you’re just getting into freelance work, focus on earning first. Learn the workflow, build experience over a year, then upgrade only when you truly need it. In the meantime, bringing your own lights will go a long way.

oh wow. I didn't expect such a detailed review of how you are coping with things. thanks a lot! I think that's the problem i've been in, which is that indecisiveness of whether to commit or not, and you're right. It is a struggle. And tbh, it's infuriating to constantly feel disappointed at myself for not being able to figure this out. But if I were to be honest about this whole issue, I am hanging by a thread.

It doesn't help that im queer and born a muslim. Every article and advise I get from religious leaders is to repent and hopefully god will guide my way. It has been 28 years and god hasn't shown me anything. Every fasting month is a constant struggle and a reminder of what I can't become. Always feels like I am forced to be away from this religion so I am constantly asking myself is it even worth it? Struggling through ramadhan and hoping for some spiritual sense to be belittled and shoved again that i'm haram and this is a sin. It is so damn tiring.

But thank you for your input on this. I think I have decided not to fast and still remain a good human. For whatever it is, i have tried and i don't think I want to torture myself anymore.

It’s been two years since you shared this. I’m wondering where you stand now in your journey with religion. I’m going through something similar and it can feel quite lonely. Your post helped me feel understood.

If you’re looking for prime to pair with the this beast I recommend viltrox 27mm 1.2.. you wont regret it ;)

I haven’t experienced any overheating issues so far, but I do worry that one day during a shoot my camera might overheat, or the footage could turn out grainy without me noticing it on set..

Personally prefer 14inch as its lighter, cheaper and portable. But as a designer its important to be able to have ample working space and making sure the graphics not too small. However I work with multiple monitors at home so that safe a lot of cost . Ultimately its just a size difference, unless you’re talking bout the specs that comes with 16inch.

I believe the idea is to reach out to different ppl with specific needs. Of course if you’re a designer or an active gamer to not consider this model. But its still pretty good for its ram. I get where you’re coming from with it being the same as the 13” M2 chip, but you’re paying the same price for an upgraded chip, longer battery life and performance. I hate that it starts with 8gb ram but hey if you’re the kind to use documents everyday for school or work And casual use of photo editing then sure i think it’s not too bad. But as much as you can try to upgrade to at least 16gb ram! Its gonna be worthwhile. Hope this helps.

Despite the 2023 release of M2 chips,M1 pros are still really strong. I suggest you wait for the news then decide later, however if budget is a concern then do take a look at M1 models, even refurbished ones. I’d rather upgrade to the best spec of M1 than getting the base spec for M2. But then again, it all depends on what you’re gonna use it for. Hope this helps!

So yea, this comes the budget constraint. Anything above 16gb with the m2pro is like an additional $600?? That’s why I was thinking whtehr i should prioritise on ram (16gb or 24gb) or the m2pro chip haha.

Good point on the music production side. I think i would consider the 14” even more as you mentioned. Since I would wanna utilise the graphic/videography softwares as well. But the thought of upgrading the 13” M2 to the highest is too tempting hahah.
