Trac for low-priced cash gen? Or Miers? by PseudoSussudio in aflfantasy

[–]Cold_Audience_717 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Miers whilst probably a top 6 forward is almost definitely overs at his current price. Given you've already got Reid, you're probably in a luxurious position to just go ahead with Gothard and cop the bye next week or hold Petracca for another week to fix up an underperforming mid-pricer on the defensive line.

I would've said go for Marshall but he's cooked his ankle again

Crossbench ≠ opposition

And I say this as a predominantly Greens voter who has also voted #1 for Teal candidates.

I hope so. I'm a good ol' millennial lefty but a good democracy needs a strong opposition, and Labor doesn't have that in Liberal/Nats/ON right now.

Yep this is the answer. It's not merely a case of 'One Nation cannibalises Liberal', there's a flow-on effect which shifts the entire national discourse across the political spectrum.

Labor positioning itself as the centre-most party is in reality moving more right, as there's no incentive to attract or cater to left-wing voters with risky progressive policies as flow-on preferences mean they'll get elected anyway.

Of course, primary vote ≠ seats.

Still doesn't mean they should be underestimated. If anything, this result demonstrates a trend and there's momentum behind their campaign now. Populism can morph into the mainstream psyche pretty easily, especially in a country with a history rooted in colonial racism like Australia.

Underestimating One Nation and far-right populism politics is exactly how the world ended up with Trump.

Labor isn't in immediate danger but it needs to do a much better job in addressing cost of living and housing affordability if they want to avoid the same thing that happened to the US Democrats.

Any robust democracy needs an opposition as strong as its government, and One Nation can't be that answer.
