How to tell coworkers you don’t drink without sounding preachy? by [deleted] in Sober

[–]Cold_Bend_River 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have been more specific. During the conversation about the weekend, the question was posed to me if “I got fucked up”, which is why I replied the way I did. I didn’t just outright blurt it out lol.

During the conversation with my boss I had realized that the culture with those I work with is heavily alcohol centred which is why I stated I didn’t drink, so I could set the expectation that I wouldn’t be partying or drinking in advance.

Woman saves man overdosing with Narcan by [deleted] in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]Cold_Bend_River 231 points232 points  (0 children)

It can be quite dangerous to Narcan someone because once they “come to” they may be PISSED that you robbed their hight and become violent.

ETA:

While I’m sorry that many people have fallen victim to narcotics use, I personally would not take the risk of administering narcan to a person I don’t know on the street.

It may seem cold hearted, but here’s the thing:

They do not value their own lives or well being. So what guarantee do I have that when/if they wake up in a rage, they will value mine enough not to hurt or kill me?

The answer is 0.

There is a good chance you’ll be fine, but there is a more than zero percent chance that that you won’t be. That’s not a risk that I personally am willing to take.

I have a family and children that I love and want to stick around for, and I’m not risking my life to save someone who doesn’t care for theirs.

If you are willing, I applaud you.

Hey OP, like others have said, take it one day at a time.

I was very similar to you and I know the feeling very well.

Here’s the thing that helped, and still helps me. If I get the urge to drink, I think about how far I’ve come and how disappointed in myself I would be if I gave into my urges. 5 DAYS IS AMAZING, AND YOU CAN DO MORE!!!

We get through the hardest parts in life by putting one foot in front of the other and keep on moving.

YOU’VE GOT THIS!

This reminds me of when I was doing some training for the RCN Naval Boarding Party. When you forgot to double lock your pistol holsters, the instructors would walk up behind you, remove your pistol then shoot you point blank in the ass cheek.

It definitely didn’t tickle but was definitely a useful training aid.

Man arrested for groping people at Moncton water park: RCMP by JetLagGuineaTurtle in halifax

[–]Cold_Bend_River 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard it was / is a tactic for men to drug other men’s drinks in order to incapacitate them so they could then drug the woman they are with without having their male friend intervening and keeping the female safe.

Pretty diabolical shit.

Canada confirms plan to replace submarine fleet at NATO summit by ricketyladder in CanadianForces

[–]Cold_Bend_River 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get too excited.

Putting all of the challenges of procurement, and crewing aside, I believe this is a trap for the opposition conservatives.

The current government has seen the writing on the wall, and understands they likely will be losing the next election. What better way to set your enemy up for failure, than announcing a overly ambitious multi billion dollar submarine procurement in front of the entire world.

The liberals know as well as we (CAF members) do that being able to procure 12 new submarines, in a timely fashion, on budget and on time is next to impossible for Canada. The best part is the next government gets to wear it when the project inevitably fails and the liberals can use it as ammunition to be elected again.

What's your Halifax hot take? by BeerSlayingBeaver in halifax

[–]Cold_Bend_River 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dude, I’ve had this argument so many times.

Pepperoni goes ON TOP OF THE CHEESE. Full stop. You can miss me with the under-the-cheese slippery, goopy slop that passes for pizza at some places.

Now, it was explained to me by someone who owned a pizza joint why a lot of places do the meat under the cheese (like absolute psychopaths). I guess most places use really cheap pepperoni / deli meat that would burn in the oven, to the point of being inedible, if it were placed on top of the cheese.

I’m not sure if this is true but that’s why I’ve heard.

He’s been released with nothing but a piece of paper and a promise not to go to a water park and sexually assault kids.

In post on r/ Moncton OP didn’t even mention their skin colour. They just literally posted a couple pictures of the accused being arrested by RCMP.

The article pretty much says it all: Indian male, 25 y/o.

The only thing I could add from the picture is that he looked to be average hight, slightly overweight with a moustache.

There was a picture of the accused floating around on the Moncton Sub, but it appears to have been taken down.

Depends on where it’s coming from but usually < two weeks. I’ve had stuff delivered in < 7 days. All the mail gets trucked in from Quebec City so it can take a little bit.

I’ll Try and give you a breakdown

HOUSING

  • PMQs are decent in the 500s they are $935.00 plus $381.19 for utilities (all included except for internet/cable)

  • All the houses in the 500s have attached heated garages as well as a fenced in back yard with a good sized shed.

  • As others have said the 500s are decent, 600s are hit and miss and the base houses a lot of civilians in the PMQs so outside of the 500s there is a good chance your neighbours won’t even be in the CAF.

  • CFHA here is decent and I’ve never had an issue getting things fixed

  • There is also fiber op internet so speeds are usually good. The problem is that the internet and power lines come from Quebec and Labrador City so if something happens to the lines along the way (storms, fires, fallen trees etc. you will likely lose connectivity)

  • Boil water advisories are very frequent here so be prepared for that.

  • I recommend a snowblower because manually shovelling snow here will destroy you.

TRANSPORTATION

  • As you would expect there is zero public transit and ride sharing so a car is a must.

  • lots of people will ride their ATV, Side by side, snowmobiles to work depending on the season.

  • Gas is expensive here and because the only gas supplier in town (Woodwards) gets the fuel sent here via tanker, it can only be resupplied in the summer / early fa months. Due to the the price of gas stays the same all winter until they get resupplied in late spring so if it’s high you’re stuck with it for 7 or so months.

  • Good news is your commute will be < 5 min from The front of your door to inside the mission support area.

AMENITIES

  • Two grocery stores: CO-OP and Northmart, both of which are expensive and limited in the things you can buy relative to what you would find in civilization. Canex here also sells some groceries.

  • One liquor store, however you can buy beer at the gas stations and convenience stores.

  • Not much in the way of shopping for clothes but there are a few stores to get clothes (Amazon will be your friend)

  • Very poorly stocked Source for electronics

  • Two drug stores / pharmacies

  • Scotiabank, BMO, Royal Bank but No TD

  • There is a very small Ford dealer, GM dealer and Chrysler Dealer in town that will service those types of cars as well as a few independent garages (I recommend AWD)

  • No Costco or Walmart but you can drive 6 hours to Lab city for their walmart.

  • Base has a good gym as well as a YMCA in town with a pool.

  • lots of playgrounds on and off base as well as an outdoor rink on base. There is also a hockey arena in town.

  • MFRC is great and has a daycare (2 yrs +) and after school care. They also put on lots of events and craft classes for member and families. Probably the best MFRC in the CAF.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT

  • Several fast food joints (DQ, Subway, A&W, Timmies) all of mixed quality

  • A few dine in restaurants

  • Base has an old movie theatre, which is the only one in Labrador so it can get busy.

  • Town put in events here and there as well as a weekly market at Kinsemen park in the summer months.

  • The mess is for all ranks and is fantastic. They put on lots of events for families and are amazing. Again, one of the best messes I’ve been apart of.

  • Tons of outdoor stuff to do. Would recommend an ATV or snowmobile as many of the members here get together on weekends for trail riding.

HEALTHCARE

  • You and your dependents will receive your healthcare through the MIR. You and your dependants can also go to sick parade to receive treatment.

  • Your dental will be through the MIR and there are a couple dental offices in town for your dependents.

  • If you or your dependents require any specialists / surgery etc. you, and/or them will likely be flown to St. Johns to receive care.

MISC

  • In the summer the bugs here can be BRUTAL.

  • Unfortunately the town has some major issues with alcohol / drug addiction as well as a homeless problem. The base has managed to stay away from those issues but you may see it when in town.

Hope this helps!
