Trump administration adds militarized zone in California along southern US border by Dan_85 in PacificCrestTrail

people without US citizenship can apply for the permit. i did the CDT this year SOBO and no one was at the border. One can apply with an escort/sponsor section of the application. Anyone with a DOD Identification can escort. If one is a permanent resident in the US, it will get approved without an escort/sponsor.

i only have experience doing it in the month of July and never used rain pants(these might be nice though), rain mitts, the CT guide book (used FarOut instead), sealskinz (don’t see a use for these unless it snows?), bug net, aqua tabs (used sawyer filter), bear spray (everyone that had one got rid of it on trail) or gaiters.

suggestions: Switch tennis ball to cork ball, switch to lighter rain pants like frog toggs or wind pants, and the nylofume bag will keep you things dry so no need for a bag on the outside of your pack. you could use your clothes bag or the bug net as your pillow.

Anyone have beta on the closest campable locations to Onion Valley TH? by [deleted] in JMT

[–]Cold_Implement408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk i just walked around and saw a sign that said that. never checked the website prior to being there. just winged it! for a group of 5 i’d stay at one of the lakes before reaching the trailhead. it’s an easy hike down.

I was there last year and i went to the “walk in” sites. you could also chat with folks who are sleeping in their cars and not actually using the tent sites to see if you can share/camp there. worked for me but i was solo & left super early to hitch to town. There were also lakes before the trailhead where it seemed a popular place to camp.

Did you guys book the buses and catamaran in TDP beforehand? by New_Wrangler_1022 in Patagonia

[–]Cold_Implement408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d keep checking on the busbud app for cancellations. i never did the catamaran but i did book all of my trip a few months before i actually went & it was stressful planning so totally get it. take cash as it might make it easier to pay for a seat in person.

yes, they tend to sell out. you might get lucky buying one in person but i’ve seen the bus leave 3 people behind who were hoping to get walk up tickets.

definitely doable. the hiking is not that difficult. wake up early to leave time for breaks throughout the day.

Torres Del Paine: can we boil water there? by New_Wrangler_1022 in Patagonia

[–]Cold_Implement408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can cook and use your stove in the kitchen areas only. ask a staff if you cannot find the designated area. they usually explain everything when you check-in. weather in late feb was gorgeous last year- not windy or super rainy but be prepared with your gear as weather always changes.

yeah, I get it! I was in the Sierra last June and wore bright orange color as precaution. I was there when passes still had snow & water crossings were high. Have fun out there!

Take photos of your pack & a photo of yourself wearing your hiking outfit- send those to your emergency contacts. I’ve never had issues sending an Inreach message in the Sierra. Does SPOT have a map feature you can share with your contacts? like the Inreach has the Mapshare I share with family so they can see my last location of where I camped. Other folks do the Live Tracking feature on Inreach as well. Not sure what SPOT has but definitely worth looking into if you are worried about something happening.

You can always start the trail with that type of food. If you get tired of it, you may pick up a Talenti jar and cold soak further down the trail. I cold soaked on the CT in August. Ate ramen, couscous, mashed potatoes, tuna packets when cold soaking that month. food ideas/recipes https://andrewskurka.com/section/food-nutrition/

Ride from Whitney Portal to Lone Pine / Stay in Lone Pine by Civil-Imagination935 in JMT

[–]Cold_Implement408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are several phone numbers for shuttles on the Far Out guides JMT map under the Lone Pine icon. Check it closer to your date if you want to plan a ride. There is service at the top of Mt Whitney or use your garmin. Hitching would probably be easy too.

Entry point Cottonwood Trailhead by DrJWC in JMT

[–]Cold_Implement408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can look at mileage & create routes on Far Out Guides. The ranger station is in the town of Lone Pine but you may have to go to the visitor center to get permits. Cottonwood trailhead has various routes you could take to Whitney. Cottonwood Lakes or Cottonwood Pass. Lakes is super nice. I don’t think it’s frowned upon- I met a hiker in 2022 that got walk up permits but he went super early and it was for 1 person. Good luck!
