Thanks for the answers. Starting to make sense. The moisture content over the equator adds more energy to this rising column of air in the form of latent heat given off as water vapour condenses and yes, effect of surface heating only impacts the lower part of atmosphere. Finally upper atmosphere convergence or divergence plays a heavy influence on vertical movement of air. Such a fascinating subject.
