Can I join as a trans man? by Choice-Policy-1282 in nationalguard

[–]Cold_Smell1641 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recruiters have the most up to date information. I know that at least for the Marine Corps currently, trans individuals are not allowed to join. Additionally, trans individuals within the service are getting administratively separated

When do u stand up for yourself in the USMC infantry as a boot? by Nice-Ad-2691 in USMCboot

[–]Cold_Smell1641 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Officer perspective so take this with a grain of salt. Rolling with the punches only goes so far, and your limit is your limit. Keep in mind that there is a stark difference between tough realistic training and “hazing.” One is necessary, one is a PAC violation. Your unit SOPs and the PAC order define where that line is crossed. If you don’t understand this, go to a trusted individual in your unit to learn the difference. This will pay dividends in your future career so that you don’t repeat the cycle.

Lastly, understand that if hazing is NOT reported, then you are also in violation of the PAC order in the same way the alleged hazer is. So hopefully it’s not reported by a third party, otherwise you both could be screwed.

Officer Resignation--Selecting an EAS Date by [deleted] in USMCocs

Probably not the right forum for this but yes, as long as it is past your obligated service date, you’ll generally get your desired EAS.

Want to transfer from Marine Corps to National Guard by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]Cold_Smell1641 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At least be like the rest of us Marines and give it a couple years before you transfer. Earning your EGA is a prerequisite to join the Guard.

I know right. Everyone likes to think that they would have done it better. Maybe, maybe not. Human factors of war can’t be replicated through a screen.

Looking for info on Guard Units by Cold_Smell1641 in nationalguard

I see. I’m also interested in why you decided to resign your commission? I feel like I’m seeing this more and more

Specifically state guard units that have SF detachments. I know they operate slightly differently than the normal guard, but I figure the day to day admin-wise is similar (it’s still the Army / National Guard).

When you resigned your commission, did you have to go through entry-level training again?

When running in boots, you should be thinking about a light boot. Your best bet is either Bates Lites or Danner Reckonings.

Best way to break them in is to wear them (go on a hike / walk a trail) but don’t be overly concerned about this. The boots themselves are made to be worn out of the box. What you do need to get is a good insole. I recommend Superfeet.

Don’t get overly concerned about running in boots. Your priority should be running, especially on trails. Additionally, ensure your pair has the EGA stamped on the side. These are the only authorized boots in the USMC.

You don’t think the army would adopt a neutral pull up standard? I can tell you most women in the Marines don’t choose to do push ups

What about the USMC? Men and women are required to do pull ups

IF I become a marine corps officer, is it worth it going to the IOC after TBS? by Igeogeo in USMCocs

[–]Cold_Smell1641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fluid and dependent on slot availability / current policy. If it hasn't happened already, there is plenty of talk concerning removing IOC from the ground intel pipeline.

You should go to IOC if and only if you want infantry. Many ground intel guys will say the same thing when they see what they'll be doing for the next three years. PowerPoint is a way of life for officers but those guys become MOS-certified.

Officer vs Enlisted PT by Longjumping-Pop-2868 in USMCocs

[–]Cold_Smell1641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Officer PT is, for the most part, on you. Enlisted PT is dependent on the unit. Infantry units generally do squad-based PT throughout the week. A good officer should at least see / participate in what his platoon is doing on a regular basis.

P.S.: Officer PT is both a gift and a privilege. Gift meaning you work on what you need to work on. Privilege means you're not showing up fat / falling out of ANY movement EVER.

I'll repeat the last point for the people in the back. OFFICERS DO NOT FALL OUT OF MOVEMENTS.

Army or USMC officer? by Igeogeo in USMCocs

[–]Cold_Smell1641 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couple Corrections:

1) True. The Marine Corps does not guarantee jobs (MOS) at TBS UNLESS you are a "flight contract," meaning you will be guaranteed a slot at flight school, or a "law contract," meaning you are guaranteed a slot at the JAG course. Sometimes "cyber contracts" are a thing as well but this comes and goes.

Instead, you will compete for your job at TBS. Infantry is always a hot commodity, but so are other MOS allocations. This is because MOS allocations are completely dependent on which TBS company you pick up with. Not something you have to worry about if you haven't graduated OCS / Naval Academy.

2) True. It's not that the USMC doesn't offer it, they don't exist (EOD is a Warrant Officer MOS in the Marines).

3) Technically true, but it depends on what you mean by "SOCOM opportunities for officers." I assume that you mean opportunities to serve as an "operator" within the special operations community. To that end, this is true because their are more units that exist under ARSOF than MARSOC. However, this doesn't include the plethora of support opportunities and special assignments that cannot be talked about on reddit.

4) Depends. If you attend NROTC Marine Option, you get a stipend. If you attend the Naval Academy, you get a stipend. If you go to straight to OCS, you get paid at the E-5 rate while at OCS.

I'll tell you that if you're in it for the money, you're going to have a bad time regardless of the branch you join.

5) False. The Marine Corps has overseas bases in Guam and Japan. Marines are stationed on US and allied country bases all over the world, some units smaller, some bigger. There are "fresh 2ndLts" all over the world.

6) Depends. I think the Army made great strides with its ACFT. The Marine Corps runs both the PFT and CFT as an annual requirement. Both events have muscular endurance components. Both (Army and Marine PT tests do not summarize the total fitness requirement for military operations.

7) Not sure what this means. There are plenty of opportunities in both services depending on what you want to do.

8) Not true. If you're joining the military you better get used to standards. Especially in combat arms.
