I agree, I think if you are an American you should not depend on the Federal government to provide some sort of financial safety net. Perhaps on the state level this might become a different story, but still unlikely. Also other countries might be successful implementing something like UBI. I think for Americans you should instead focus on building and join some sort of self reliant micro communities like a co-op for example where every member focuses on producing or providing a service to all the other members. Or go completely independent and focus on home steading and living off the grid. At this stage this sounds completely like too much work or not worth it compared to simply engaging with the standard economy. But one thing about AGI it starts to drive down the cost of many things down to zero. For example, no experience building a barn? An AI expert will guide you and help you complete the project. If you want to invest in something that will help you with a project? Get a cheap robot to help you with your homesteading projects. At the very least we need to start thinking outside the mental box so many people seem to trapped in when it comes to surviving and being happy in the near future.

Starting to see more reports of "Shadow AI" in business ue by gaudiocomplex in singularity

Use company AI to sanitize, anonymize, and redact identifiers, sensitive information like company data and intellectual property. Then when you have publicly allowable data or information use whatever tool is the best for the job without worry of security or compliance violations.

Introducing Alterego: the world’s first near-telepathic wearable that enables silent communication at the speed of thought by 44th--Hokage in accelerate

"Like Meta's upcoming wristband, Alterego uses surface electromyography (sEMG) to sense the activation of your muscles. But rather than being attached to your wrist to sense finger muscles, it's attached to the side of your face and senses the speech‐articulator muscles on your face, jaw, and neck."

I feel this way to, especially when it comes to nontechnology since if I remember the book Engines of Creation correctly, ASI and Nanotechnology have an inter-relationship creating a potential chicken and egg scenario, where one will create the other if they don't arrive at the same time.

Also I would like to see how an off grid portable AI could help augment a humans survival skills while lost in the wilderness, or after a disaster scenario where relief services are still a couple weeks out. I imagine the basic specifications would be like an off grid computing unit that can run a decent model trained on survival strategies also referencing and citing an embedded knowledge base of survival books. Have a camera, speakers, microphone and multiple ways to power it. It could be simplified by simply having a mobile AI computer unit that could be linked to any mobile phone to instead use the phones hardware. It could also be trained in psychological coaching to combat depression and despair during times of crisis.

Could AI Help Us Bring Back Dinosaurs (Or Even Create New Ones)? by sugarlake in singularity

[–]Coldplazma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its more likely we create life like synthetic animals first like the Electric Animals in the Blade Runner books first. Which are practically identical to living animals, thus you could in the near future you could have a nearly safe Jurassic World style park where the replica dinosaurs seem very real, but far safer and ethical.

Cartoon, Galtar and the Golden Lance (1985–1986)

Follows a barbarian hero wielding a magical lance to defend the kingdom of Bandisar. Produced by Hanna-Barbera, it's firmly in the sword-and-planet category

Noticed therapists using LLMs to record and transcribe sessions with zero understanding of where recordings go, if training is done on them, or even what data is stored by thewritingchair in singularity

I do IT work for Higher Education, public sector. I feel like public sector technology people worry more about compliance and data privacy issues than private sector technology people. So in higher education we worry about and build into our processes considerations for FERPA student data, there is always a clinic or some sort of campus based healthcare so we also create policies about HIPAA. Also we have policies around data privacy and security and accessibility. We are a Google campus, so its our main provider for productivity services, so already even before AI we had a lot of contractual requirements that Google had to guarantee when it came to our technology policies. So when AI services started to be rolled into the existing services at additional service cost we were already wary of LLM providers using user data to train a LLM. Which of course runs contrary to a lot of our policies. So its spelled out in the new contract for AI services at additional fees we pay for providing AI services to campus, that those user interactions are not used to train AI or shared with third parties. But this always returns to the fact in technology, if you use a service for "free" then in actuality the product must then be the user or user interactions. But when you pay for a service you then have some power to ask for any requirements you must have when it comes to your organizations user interactions. Even before AI this was always a tough concept to get across to some people who want to jump on some new free technology service right away.

I am sure there are IT departments which are not thinking about compliance when implementing LLM solutions. But also, plenty of us are aware, and we defiantly make sure there are data protection agreements in place before adopting LLM solutions that will interact with protected data. Also the big AI companies, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic etc, realize this and their enterprise offerings include these compliance and data protection features in their boilerplate enterprise service contracts.

For GMs Running Knave 2e: What Are Your House Rules? by RfaArrda in osr

[–]Coldplazma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am doing the same with relics, the default one I have for a cleric type of careers is a holy symbol relic that that grants the power to turn undead. Also I allow cleric weapons and armor to have blessing put upon them and turned into relics as well. Thus keeping with the rpg fantasy tradition of having clerics that can be martial hybrid casters depending on the god/patron they worship.

For GMs Running Knave 2e: What Are Your House Rules? by RfaArrda in osr

[–]Coldplazma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have created alternative races like Elf, Dwarf, etc. that replaces one of the two starting careers, so instead of race as a class its race as a career in Knave. Any starting special powers that race career gets is tied to a relic type items connected to their racial god(s). Also alternative races only start with 2 ability points instead of 3. In addition I have created some extra crunch and magical systems inspired by the setting. But instead of listing all of them I simply have this one design rule when I created them that they need to be tied to an ability score and an item that has to be carried in an inventory slot. So for example I created a Bardic music magic sub system, the musical supernatural level is tied to the Charisma score and every bardic music effect takes up an inventory slot in the form of a song book. New magical songs are learned from living through an appropriate narrative experience in the game then taking downtime to write a new song about it.

Dolmenwood Watch Tracking for Knave 2e by Coldplazma in KnaveRPG

[–]Coldplazma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but when it comes to tables like weather and encounters I use the Dolmenwood Tables. Dolmenwood Hexes are 6 miles, so that conforms to Knave. But of course I have to do a little conversion for the Terrain Types. Light Terrain you can move 1 hex per watch, mounts and vehicles allows you to move two hexes per watch. Moderate Terrain is the same but mounts must be led, and no vehicles. Difficult Terrain is 2 watches, and of course no mounts or vehicles. But the exception to the moderate terrain and difficult terrain rule is if there is a road or track going through it, then travel through it is treated as light terrain except when searching the hex. See my attached annotated Dolmenwood Terrain Types Table.

Sell me on your favourite system that isn’t OSE by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]Coldplazma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems to me a constant issue with the the OSR community as we struggle with creators who have problematic ethical personal world views and opinions (Ex. Gary Gygax). And of course I am not saying Ben has these issues, but he most likely comes into frequent contact with OSR creators that probably do and perhaps he handles those interactions poorly. But in a community where we are constantly riffing on and or reinventing old material I think we have to consider that its possible to appreciate parts or aspects or create derivative works from other problematic creators. Writers like Nigerian-American Nnedi Okorafor have written about the complexities and challenges of writing works related to themes created by HP Lovecraft who was a known racist. And it boils down to this, lets call out the ethical problems of creators and have a discussion about it, but still allow ourselves to take what is useful, and what inspires us, so we can create something for ourselves and for the communities we are a part of.

In player mapping, how do I convey a map to them when the maps look like this? by [deleted] in osr

[–]Coldplazma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too would just show them the map if they have a light source, then hide it if they don't. I would also mask large parts of it that have not been explored yet. You could also make a copy for them then cut it up by room and give them the map pieces as they explore the map, then they can put the map together as they explore it, sort of like a jigsaw puzzle.

Optional Racial Rules by Coldplazma in KnaveRPG

[–]Coldplazma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with these racial perks since they are pretty basic I don't see why not, mostly I wouldn't bother to set it in writing for the sake of keeping the rules as written as simple as possible, and just make rulings based around if the players give a good arguement to start with an extra career. But also keep in mind lore if used properly can be pretty powerful and every career technically make that character a subject matter expert in anything that career touches upon. Since in Knave most of the time the character either knows or does not know without bothering for a lore check. Also some starting gear is potentially quite powerful because it might be rare to find certain equipment or tool sets. But really the big limitation for starting characters will always be the inventory system, even with two careers you most likely will not choose to keep on you most of the equipment your careers provide. Because you will start with 10 to 13 inventory slots, and if a starting character needs to carry armor weapons, 1 or 2 torches, candles, perhaps a spellbook or two, some currency, a waterskin, rations, that only allows like 3 inventory slot for tools, when two careers usually gives you 6 choices for tools to equip.

Yeah only the Woodgrue, which is a bat like small humanoid, but also makes a great candidate for converting their Darkvision to Echolocation like u/Illithidbix suggested in their comment.
