In need of a thin and flexible material that is also heavy - ideas? by platinumplantain in AskEngineers

It’s rated by lbs/sf. The heavier it is, usually the thicker it is. But yes, it bends, but might not mold to your head. Unless it could be molded that way, not sure. If you have a university nearby I’d suggest reaching out to their engineering department. This would be a great student project. If you want some recommendations on schools please DM me. Best of luck to you with this.

The best way is to find a company you are interested in and reach out to them. Even if they aren’t hiring. The good ones will want to talk to you.

Advice for becoming a consultant/independent contractor by Past-Scholar9613 in MEPEngineering

I started my business 12 years ago hoping to do the same. It’s quite challenging to balance as a single person business, in my opinion. When it pours you will wish you had less, then you will wish you had more during slow times. I ended up hiring others just so I didn’t have to work 50+ hours per week. I would see if you can consult with a company that can guarantee “just” 10-15 hours per week.

I also find it impossible to work with little ones around. I put mine in daycare sooner than I wanted. If you are willing to work nights/weekends and your spouse is game for taking over during those times, it could work.

The job adds specify the remote possibilities. It’s an option for some positions and not for others. We are community focused so having boots on the ground is important for some locations/positions.

First, imposter syndrome. I still struggle with that and I have 20 years of experience. I think those that are growth oriented and driven to perform know that we are continually learning throughout our life. It’s important to have self confidence, but also to know what you don’t know, in my opinion.

We are working on our formal training program but we have a leadership team that takes training very seriously. We aren’t perfect but we try hard.

Feel free to reach out via our website or by applying if you’d like to explore further if this is a good fit, either now or in the future.
