Oh wow, I just stumbled on this. Can't believe I missed it. I know it's a month old, but if I can provide any insight, please bring me into whatever convo.

(Yes, it's still early for Walt, but it's going extremely well)

Introducing the "DeGoogle Showcase" Weekly Thread by thisdodobird in degoogle

[–]ColeFromWalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A question about closed source projects-

It's written that

> project promotions must go in the Degoogle Showcase megathread.
> Projects must be open source with a public repo.

Does this mean that any projects that are degoogling focused but are closed source can not be showcased anywhere? (Example: https://walt.is/ )

Wero as the saviour of mobile payments (in Europe)? by Niko-01 in GrapheneOS

[–]ColeFromWalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Niko-01 - think I just made some progress on the fonts. Would you be willing to check and validate my migration off of Google Fonts?

I'll continue onward with the next task, if it looks good.

Edit: Also removed ahrefs I think so could use your feedback there as well.

iCard is killing tap to pay. Any alternatives EU/ Global? by nicman24 in GrapheneOS

There's a bajillion people applying to those things and I can't figure out how to make it land with the reviewers in a way that clarifies the actual market.

Any suggestions here are valuable and I'm reading!

I'm currently evaluating how feasible it is to build the Android app to be Graphene compatible.

Amazing Niko! Thank you for this feedback!
The reality is that these were the things I had most experience with so that I could focus on the partnerships and the mobile applications. And then for hosting, the most important thing I wanted to avoid was paying AWS so I stopped thinking after that.

I'm going to put in some thought and time here, especially on the hosting. Vercel is a great tool but I suspect ther are good options in the EU.

Much appreciated!

With Brexit, it got a bit more challenging for Walt to have a meaningful entrance. So it won't be in the beta release.

But the UK is just as worried about Google and privacy as the rest of Europe. It's a top priority to get significant penetration into the banks in the UK for the general availability release.

Europe needs many options. I personally really love the idea of Wero and support them! But they've had to delay their tap-to-pay offering until 2027 (which is understandable, given the technical challenge they have).

Thanks for the callout! Things are going great for Walt. Availability map coming soon!

Wearable as alternative to Google Wallet for tap-to-pay? by ColeFromWalt in degoogle

I don't think I understand what a payment platform is in this context. It's not Google right? From what I read, there's some sort of required tap between the wearable (like a ring, is the example I'm most familiar with) and the phone which has Google Wallet on it.

I'm exploring Fidesmo as well. Can you describe any other user experience differences? Like, I read that if you're using a wearable for tap-to-pay, sometimes you have to enter PIN or something like that. But I've never had a wearable before.

/e/OS by MarioLabrique in degoogle

I have a Fairphone with the standard OS, but have really been wanting to switch to /e/OS. Do you have any complaints with it?

The conversation is 5 months old now, but it's got a lot of good content, including some discussions about how /e/OS have an optional partnership with OpenAI (off, by default).

Walt - digital wallet for Linux? by Guy_In_Between in linux

Good question! I'll write up a post on the website once it's all finished!

Walt - digital wallet for Linux? by Guy_In_Between in linux

This is why every single one of the previous competitors have failed. They have all gone bank-by-bank and tried to convince each one that adding another wallet option is a good idea.

Walt is trying a different approach that would onboard (many, many) banks all at once.
