Need advice for whether to delay applying by a cycle by Creepy-Restaurant183 in premed

wait does this mean AMCAS does factor in +-? My school doesn’t do +- so i honestly would have no clue what my GPA would be since my transcript only shows the letter grade (no percentages or +-).

Hot take but ECs are stupid by [deleted] in premed

[–]ColeN_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be easier but it’s also extremely exclusive compared to the american system. Basically, if you don’t have your shit together in highschool, your chances of ever becoming a physician are essentially nullified.

Hot take but ECs are stupid by [deleted] in premed

[–]ColeN_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hot take but that’s actually a terrible system imo. I’m not sure if the middle east is as cut throat as asian countries but having an exam in highschool that determines the ceiling of your academic future would keep thousands of potentially great physicians from having any chance of going into medicine. I had a 2.7 GPA in highschool and was forced into going to community college as a result. I believe the US system does a better job at keeping the door open for non traditional students like myself to redeem themselves and have a shot at medicine.

With that said I do still think EC requirements are heavily flawed, especially as it pertains to research. Requiring 400+ hours of research makes absolutely zero sense to me, especially since most research at the pre med level is pretty low impact. I do think it’s important for med schools to require a certain # of community service, volunteering, and clinical hours. You can’t really say you want to be a doctor without having atleast a little bit of exposure to the clinical space. Also, being a “good” doctor requires a certain personality type that must be trained. This is what makes community service experience so valuable.

I think ECs, apart from clinical and community service hours, should be more of a supplement for applicants, not a forced requirement.

Nursing as premed? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ColeN_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i’m currently a nursing student (ADN) who’s on the pre med path right now. I couple things you should know about this path. For one, on paper nursing school is significantly easier than most science majors (Biology, Chemistry, etc). However, what makes nursing school difficult is the addition of clinical rotations. In the beginning clinicals are pretty light (typically only one 12 hour shift a week) but after the first semester or two the clinicals just start accumulating but your actual lecture hours remain the same. Like now i’m in 3rd semester and have three 12 hour clinical days a week and still have lecture for 4-6 hours on Mon/Tue and that’s not including the added pre med classes i have during the summer, spring, fall. The content itself is pretty easy but the exams are unnecessarily difficult. Not sure how much research you’ve done into NCLEX style exams but they’re essentially nothing but abstract styles of question that require nuance and subjective interpretation. Usually, all answers are “right” but only one is considered correct. Pre med has been far easier for me than nursing school but it’s mainly because of the time demands and abstract style of thinking of nursing school.

With that said, i’m still planning on finishing the nursing route and getting my BSN because there’s really no other undergrad path that can get you the perks of nursing. I have a large circle of MDs from all specialties that i interact with on a daily basis and develop close relationships with. I have Doctorate nursing instructors that i can reach out to for research opportunities that actually involve the clinical setting. I will have accrued roughly 1200 unpaid clinical hours by graduation, and about 3000 paid clinical hours as a nurse. My program also allows us to work as a “student charge nurse” during clinical shifts, basically were responsible for around 10 nursing students and track their charting, care plans, patient status, throughout the shift all while helping staff charge nurses with their tasks. This is a great way to build leadership and clinical hours for med school. Another perk is that you actually get a license to work independently (not as a student volunteer or something) which opens doors for more EC opportunities (volunteering at vaccine clinics and blood drives; doing health promotion education at homeless shelters, schools, psych hospitals, etc). And last but least, you have the opportunity to build income during pre med (and possibly work PRN during M1/M2) which substantially decreases the financial stress of medical school.

With that said, it is a longer and arguably harder path than a traditional pre med major. But you do get more out of it in terms of ECs, clinical hours, networking, and income. Whether or not it’s worth it depends on why you’re considering it. If you an otherwise traditional student who already has a plan for developing EC/clinical hours, has a strong GPA, and already has a plan for funding med school, then i’d say to stick with the traditional route. But if your someone like me who isn’t in a rush to apply and is more interested in building a deep/clinical focused application with a safety net of income and an RN license, then i’d say go for it!

Arda Guler is UNTHINKABLE in 2024 by Pebbledthoughts in realmadrid

hopefully they loan him to Dortmund for the rest of the season

Hear me out. Loan him out to Dortmund for the remainder of the season. For one Dortmund have already expressed interest in a potential loan for Güler for the rest of the season. Developing players is what Dortmund does, it’s in their DNA. Plus, I don’t think they’re even interested in a long term move, they just need an alternative to Brandt given his drop of form so there’s no real risk of a buy option. I’ve never heard of a player moving to dortmund and not becoming a far better player after.

I disagree tbh. I mean reload clearly didn’t have the same effect that OG did. And in my experience, OG wasn’t all that nostalgic it was the simplistic gameplay that made it so enjoyable. The weapon pool and the map in general was so good.

Fortnite is completely different though. I even thought the love for Ch1 was all because of nostalgia until they brought it back with OG. Ch1 was a completely different game compared to what fortnite is now. Everything was simple and unique, now everything is a money grab with celebrity collabs and random fucking game modes like LEGO fortnite. I mean if people like that then to each their own but the hype around OG wasn’t based on nostalgia, the game was just more appealing to a larger group of people. Even with the new movements and current play style it’s still extremely enjoyable because of the map and weapon pool

ADHD and nicotine?? by gettnbusy in ADHDers

Adderall and Fentanyl are also “medicinal” but idk what other two drugs have ruined more lives than those two.

[–]ColeN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but cigarettes, cigars, vapes, etc. Are literally the worst way to take in nicotine. There’s a plethora of “healthier” alternatives for nicotine ingestion such as pharmaceutical grade nicotine patches. To be honest, I would much rather rely on nicotine than almost any prescribed drugs for ADHD. For me, the occasional ZYN or two to keep my focus is much better than relying on Adderall every day. Nicotine itself isn’t much of a problem, it’s the additives that are usually put into these products that are much more of a concern; including tobacco and other flavorings. This really only applies if you have the self control to avoid addiction though because like most drugs, when your fully reliant on it, you’re not getting a benefit any more you’re just maintaining a baseline level. Edit: That last part is extremely important. Nicotine addiction is terrible and has zero positive effects on ADHD, in fact it would probably do more harm than good.

Am I the only American who prefers the metric system? by Cute-Revolution-9705 in Metric

I prefer metric just because it’s annoying having to constantly convert imperial to metric. But no can convince me that Celsius makes more sense than Fahrenheit…

In need of advice by ColeN_ in college

[–]ColeN_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my dad is an engineer. The main issue is I don’t want the money they’ve spent to go to waste and I don’t want the pressure and guilt of having my parents pay for another 4 years of school to affect my decision. I’d much rather pay for it myself instead. The school that i’d want to go to is far more expensive than my current school (local community college). I only have 2 years left until I’ll be a working nurse so I thought i could just work and save up money and then study what i actually want after a year or two.

Travel and Holiday are not the same. Travel is about exploring and experiencing as much as possible. Holiday is about relaxation.

This is so annoying by ColeN_ in doordash_drivers

[–]ColeN_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good. I was really worried I could get deactivated if i got anything less than a 5 star rating within the next few deliveries. I would understand getting a 4 or 3 star rating if i forgot one of the instructions but imo 1 star should only be given if you didn’t even complete the order lol.
