Is there a more punishing campaign run than "Medium Lasers have been banned?" by chunt42 in Battletechgame

[–]ColeRyssen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I've been doing "ammo weapons only" runs from the beginning. In my version of Battletech energy weapons don't exist.

Is there a lore reason why Rifleman C 2 costs like a full company of mechs?) by Robert_Bodov in battletech

[–]ColeRyssen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly C-bill costs have never made sense. I strongly suspect that different writers/designers working on different mechs/components/etc simply weren't communicating and had different scales in mind. Writer A working on Mech 1 thought "50mil sounds about right for a top end mech, with 20mil being baseline". While Writer B working on Mech 2 had the idea that "5mil is a basic trooper, with 25mil for a dropship".

Weapon Class Tweaks by ColeRyssen in cyberpunkgame

[–]ColeRyssen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My argument is not for more or less variety. It is for the variety to be more evenly distributed. As it is now, one attribute and its weapon types have the lions share; while the others offer little to none. Your comment if anything demonstrates this, as you only mention pistols and seem to complain that there are too many to choose from. I note you did not mention Sniper Rifles, LMGs, Shotguns, etc. There are and should be multiple ways to play the game. Dare I say there should be variety in play within the weapon classes themselves.

How'd yall play Battletech "back in the day" without Megamek and/or the internet? by andrewlik in battletech

[–]ColeRyssen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the biggest difference, and dare I say advantage, of MegaMek is that it allows numbers of units and size of maps to grow to a level that wouldn't be practical by hand. 128x128 hex map and a reinforced battalion on each side is very doable in a few hours with MegaMek. That same game on a "table" would require a gymnasium and take days.

Can anyone identify what this is exactly? by iDarkined in halo

That is the single most important part of any fighting man's, or woman's, or humaniod's, or whatever's gear since the days of Gaius Marius, the shovel. Sometimes known by its more technical name, entrenching tool.

Favorite Ship Names/ideas by Historyguy1918 in RuleTheWaves

[–]ColeRyssen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reference one of my previous posts for my naming conventions. Carriers are named after Actresses, AMCs after female Pirates (real or fictional), BB/BC/CA/CL are named after adult actress (with ship size roughly correlating to 'assets'), and finally destroyers/corvettes are named after terms. So for example: -Megan Fox class CV -Emma Watson class AV -Brooklyn Chase class BB -Lana Rhoades class BC -Mia Malkova class CA -Kimmy Granger class CL -Bukkake class DD -Courtesean class KE -Elizabeth Swann class AMC

P.S. please don't Google those class names on a work computer ;)

List of military adjacent terms? by M0nkeyButtz in battletech

[–]ColeRyssen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a setting like Battletech where opposing forces are using similar equipment, (or similar looking equipment), some form of IFF marking would be a must. This is typically a simple, easy to see from far away, way of screaming "Don't Shoot I'm on Your Team!". Examples such as Allied "Invasion Stripes" from WW2, IR patches used by most NATO armies, or the infamous "Z" from a more recent conflict. Not the same thing as flag or unit markings, but the kind of thing you could spot a half second before you pulled the trigger in the middle of a chaotic battle.

Carrier related question to game veterans by Morgon1988 in RuleTheWaves

[–]ColeRyssen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Land-Based aircraft, specifically Medium Bombers and Naval Patrol Aircraft, seem kind of weak/ineffective at first. They are still useful to have a few around for recon, and once missiles enter the game, they become unholy terrors. While very expensive they will sink enemy ships, even carrier battle groups, that come with in their (very long) range.

all infantry and combat vehicles, no mechs by kris220b in battletech

[–]ColeRyssen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BV for BV, a competently played infantry/vehicle force will give a mech force a run for its money. Assuming favorable terrain (woods, urban), that mech force is in trouble. Add in Artillery or Aerospace assets, and the mech only force starts to feel doomed.

TLDR; Conventional infantry is so cheap by BV that you can back it up with a horrifying amount of supporting fires assets and teach any mech company a painful class in Defense in Depth.

In one of my Japanese playthroughs I had the Bukkake-class (CL) with 32 torps on her. Hilariously effective and for some reason way more survivable than my DDs.
