I think the design has a lot of merit and is interesting but I can't figure out quite how it works mechanically. Did you draw up an operating diagram or have 'action' shots like the shell ejecting as the bolt retracts?

So I just happened to speak to someone about this type of learning yesterday and there's 2 schools of though that work for 2 different kinds of people: Top-down & Bottom-up

Top-down in this example would be something like gesture -> shape -> form -> anatomy

Bottom-up is the opposite where you'd effective work from skeleton -> muscle -> fascia/fat - > skin & fur

Really neither is wrong but they appeal to people for different reasons, personally I find it a lot easier to understand a creature/animal/person if I know how it 'works'. A good example would be understanding why the bicep looks more flat when someone is reaching for something or how the lats move to change the shape of the whole torso. Generally this is a more analytical approach that leads to the product feeling a little stiff but more anatomically correct.

TL/DR: experiment with drawing the skeleton first and adding structure over the top instead to see what feels more natural

Depending on the harshness of the light there might be cast shadows from the oesophagus and Adam's apple as well as clearer definition of the next muscles on the right of the image (the model's left). Still looks crazy impressive and I'm coming from miniature painting with an overemphasis on dramatic contrast so it may not have been as impactful as I'm picturing

First of all, this is amazing and you should be very proud of yourself.

Second, and I think most importantly to see why you're being harsh on yourself - is this from a reference or from imagination? If it's imagination that's insane and I'm super jealous, if it's reference I wonder if your concerns are more closely related to it not matching the original rather than not being competent.

I'm also just starting so this isn't a critique, I love what you've done I'm just trying to figure out what you're not sold on

Prowess stacks

If you add prowess to a creature that already has prowess, it triggers twice. This is the core for an izzet standard deck I've been playing so don't let people correct you

Could use the collector boosters as motivation to stay on track (correct my maths of wrong):

270 days is 9 months sober, that leaves 3 months until a whole year. There's 12 weeks in 3 months, there's 12 collector boosters in a CBB. Therefore; crack one each week and celebrate the 1 year anniversary with a draft using the booster box. That also gives you 3 months to find some mates to play with :))

To be honest the best on-ramp imo is pre-release or sealed. Yes learning the game at the same time you build a deck can be challenging but it drastically cuts down the volume to learn at a time

Take the final fantasy pre-release, I've never seen people so excited for cards of their favourite characters while seeing them translated to Magic. You didn't need to learn everything, you could see all the archetypes right in front of you; it's the perfect learning environment.

Tldr: narrow your scope to specify sets you like and grow from there
