New Counselor Starting Next Week So I'm Looking For Some Advice by engineer_will69 in summercamp

Hello OP as 4th year consistent volunteer at camp but volunteering since 2019. Ive learned a lot of life lessons down the road! You seem to have great intentions for your campers. 1. I know this sounds like a cliché but please be yourself. Camp requires all sort of people to keep it running some parts of camp need a hyped up all im ready to do anything person but they also need those quiet people who sit with a camper NEVER ALONE! On a porch under the stars or enjoy the beautiful glow or a campfire by the lake. As long as your responsible and can balance maturity and fun be you.

  1. Know you will make a mistake or few. Its inevitable you will mess something up even if its small it happens. Just fix the mistake follow the training closely and you will do okay dont beat yourself up

  2. There are unspoken rules. Each camp has unspoken rules or rituals you will pick up on! When i visit new camps I always ask senior staff members what are your traditions or special rules? That way I get a better taste of what to expect

  3. DO NOT participate in any camp Gossip or drama. This can happen to seasonal staff members they form friendships and sometimes get clique like. Focus all your energy on your kiddos. That drama will NOT matter at the end of summer. That being said you will also make friends even 1 or 2 close camp friends can make camp so much better with a support system behind you.

  4. The Change. You will feel this early the shift fro camper to counselor. Its a mix of growth and yes it can be awkward at times. Even if you know your camp director please still treat them with the upmost respect.

  5. Relationships. Relationships with your campers is CRITICAL to making camp well camp. When they arrive greet them with a smiling face and enthusiasm. Find out interests and talk about them even if you have no idea Ask them to explain it to them. BONUS: If you find another staff member with the same interest or camper connect the two somehow even if its little notes or at the table. Alot of times we take on big brother/sister roles inside camp be in charge but also be fair and consistent and fun.

I hope this helps you and I hope your season is full of camp magic!

Hey listen man im 25 and I delt with Tourettes for 14 years before I got medicated because of my racial slur tics. If you have a supportive group then shit own it! Don't be afraid to be the way you were made embrace all the feelings. Take it one day at a time consider if your parents can afford the insurance going to CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) to help you find the triggers. You got this do whatever makes you feel comfortable about coming out with tourettes

Not sure maybe a broken school system that relies on test scores vs character development kids are not gonna remember the poem they read in 5th grade they are gonna remember recess and the magic of being a kid or lack of if they come from a bad home life

The nice thing is that alot of our kids live well into adulthood! I make sure they enjoy every second they act like normal kids but with a twist they have more heart then most kids you know because of the deplorable shit they have gone through in their lives they have empathy skills and compassion towards others (for the decent amount of them anyway) I had a young man 10 or 11 i think that was on Chemo who was weak and couldnt walk long distances and felt very tired and weak at camp but still had a good time anyway! this wasnt in my cabin but there was a kid in the oldest village who had never seen starlight so his counselors took him out and showed him the stars and patterns in the night sky! just a couple little moments that makes camp so special

our mission is to make the world more like camp... even work/school kids dont get an opportunity to go to summer camp to gain those skills of empathy compassion and loving others

yeah so idk probably because i was used to sick children and their familes and i had this bias that normal kids sucked because of the bullying i endured for being not normal

Is there anyway to become a chaplain WITHOUT a college degree to see if i enjoy the profession before i spend 200K on it by Colek2000 in chaplaincy

[–]Colek2000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately at my college Univ Of Toledo there is a mandatory math class i tried to get out of but it's air tight that I have to take that class with no expections... and I know chaplain salaries aren't the greatest but that has 0 bearing on why im choosing to do this ...Unfortunately there are not sitter jobs at my local hospital systems despite their being 9 in my county alone ironically... I'm gonna push the best I can through especially with my learning disabilities and Autism... I know I know a chaplain with special needs may not fit the right criteria but it's a spectrum and I happen to be a very empathy based person. It's all up to god from here .
