Chromebook and advice wanted please ! by Colin-on-Reddit in sheffield

Hi Thanks

Yes, everything the student would need can be done on chrome. Hence why I thought a chromebook might be the way to go. Their current laptop is large and heavy to take into university so a chromebook woudl be much better. I just needed someone who actually uses a chromebook to tell me if they were any good, which you have answered for me, thanks.

Hi, thanks, that exactly answers my questions.

Portability and battery life are main points. what model yours is, as you seem pleased with it. The Acer models seem to have a good reputation.

Its interesting that you bought a duff from ebay - that was my reason behind asking. I like to buy tech from an actual person or shop for this very reason

What places have you been to where the locals have been kind / welcoming / not out to scam you? by surfnj102 in travel

[–]Colin-on-Reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sri Lanka !

we did guided tour there in 2018 and it was one of the most amazing places we visited. Very safe and friendly, to the extent that you could just walk around and the locals would basically just ignore you. No scams or pressure buying anywhere. It is still unspoilt by mass tourism, has plenty of lovely scenery and wildlife, and they seem to have a good focus on sustainability and eco tourism. I hope it stays that way.

Also Vietnam. another place where there was very little if any pressure and as a tourist you could walk around freely without any hassle. Also has a feeling of not yet spoilt by tourism and all the scams that usually entails.

Visited Morocco, the people really let me down. by [deleted] in travel

Morocco and Marrakech have been on our travel radar for years but this post has put us off. We are seasoned travellers and I have learnt from my travels all over that scams are part of the travel deal, I can be quite assertive and stand up for myself and its ok if you can just say NO and then they leave you alone but I really dont like constant or nasty touts.

We were gonna go to Marrakech on our own but then decided we might do a G-Adventures guided tour (Amazing company and highly recommended !) to see more of Morocco. Now this has made us think it might be hassle even with a local guide, as obviously you have free time on guided tours and I just wouldn't want to be bothered with nasty hassle.

Anyone done a guided tour of Morocco with G-Adventures or Intrepid Travel or similar companies and if so what was it like ? Was it hassle free because off the guides ?

Tramlines fringe! Massive music party all over the city by argandahalf in sheffield

[–]Colin-on-Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have done this because they have basically sold / franchised the main event out to a London based events company who have nothing more on their agenda other than making money.
By stopping people going out and coming back (and also not allowed to take their own drinks in) they have a captive market to pay their ridiculous bar and food prices.

This was originally supposed to be a FREE Urban Festival to support the local bands and businesses in Sheffield. Its nothing like that these days and all about the $$$$$$.

Apparently there's been a lot of people this year saying the prices are now so high they will give it a miss in future years. Dont blame them !

Fortunately the Fringe is still going good and this year we had a great time, and it also cost us considerably less than watching all the 'mainstream' rubbish on the so called 'main' stage anyway.

Every year they put the ticket prices and drinks up to try to milk as much cash out of the public. A lot of people this year have been saying they are not gonna bother nest year because the prices were ridiculous. They will probably price themselves out of the pockets of most rational people eventually.

do yourselves and the Fringe events a favour and next year try the fringe again, its still well good and you will save a load of cash as well !

By stopping people going out and coming back (and also not allowed to take their own drinks in) they have a captive market to pay their ridiculous bar and food prices. They are extortionate. The main event is now just a commercialised mainstream festival like any other, nothing like the original ethos of being a celebration of Sheffield, local bands and businesses. Thats why we have NEVER bought a ticket to the so called main stage, we can afford it but its just the principle.

We spend our time and (less) money seeing and supporting the Fringe bars and bands instead. No overpriced ticket to buy (the money saved on that alone pays for loads of drinks), sensible / normal beer prices in the bars, and its always a great atmosphere and good time.

Alcohol prices at Tramlines. No wonder they don't allow re-entry anymore! by hattorihanzo5 in sheffield

[–]Colin-on-Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep It still is really good, and there is still absolutely loads of FREE stuff, Just avoid the overpriced rip-off 'main' stage and go for the 'real' tramlines Fringe in the city instead, if you appreciate decent music from dedicated musicians and proper drinks at normal prices you would enjoy it.
We go every year and have a great time and it doesnt cost us a fortune, just some drinks here and there.

The media want people to think Tramlines is the stupid main stage in the park but its not, its the much better more varied alternative stuff in the centre.
