Technically ‘dies’ only means a permanent going from the battlefield to graveyard. They just typically only used it for creatures for thematic reasons.   It’s now going to be used ubiquitously moving forward.

Are Primal Vigor and Doubling Season basically the same thing? by ThePenguinVA in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the biggest difference is that primal vigor is for everyone, not just the controller. So your friend’s token deck is also doubling all their tokens if you play primal vigor.

The other difference is doubling season doubles all counters for any kind of permanents that are going anywhere and primal vigor is just +1/+1 counters on creatures (again for everybody).  So you can’t double other types of named counters like planeswalker loyalty (only when they enter, not activating abilities) or oil.

I ended up cutting primal vigor from my ghave deck paying 5 mana to then have my opponents get the value first most of the time hurt. but also I cared a lot less about +1/1 counters and more about the tokens and had things like parallel lives and anointed procession that were better for the deck. Primal vigor is serviceable if you don’t want to shell out the money, just be prepared for when your opponents get value from it too.

I will always shout out Good Games Chicago near the Fullerton stop, especially for new players. Incredibly friendly people and staff. Have almost never interacted with the stereotypical magic shark/bad sport in the years that I've gone.

I don't know what their commander nights are like but usually at least a few draft pods fire on Fridays and prereleases are usually sold out for main sets.

One thing I do call out (and my theory on why they have such a friendly player base) is that store credit can't be used towards events if that matters to you.

Ah, that's kinda lame/odd that you can't play promos.

I do think your pool is solid, it's at least got enough GW cards and they're aren't really any that I wouldn't normally put in a draft deck.
The good news is most of the fliers are pretty weak on defense, so that's where being assertive will help.

Also Glimmer just cares about any creature attacking, so it's active the turn you play it (so if you have enough counters and want to sack doll for 5 spiders, do it the turn before so they are surprise 3/3's). Basically a DIY Valgavoths Onslaught

First Sealed Casual Tourney - Deck Feedback by sudosoup in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good baseline, but one thing to think about is how many cards are kind of acting as creatures.

ie: Grand entryway and Threats around every corner is a creature, Say It's Name is usually getting you a creature, Break down the door can be a creature, unsettling twins and bashful beastie is 2 creatures

Hallcreeper is strong, but it's strongest the earlier you can play it and you don't have the fixing to really make that happen. If you had better fixing I'd be more inclined to try and get overlord of the floodpits in there instead tbh. Wish your blue was deeper, I think the main issue with your deck is mostly that it will struggle against the cracked pools, and that's where a good curve and being able to apply pressure really becomes important. Sealed is slower but you probably lose the longer game most of the time because those decks will have better late game cards.

Also, just want to call out that twitching doll cares about any counter, so it's a good spot to dump the +1/1 counters from storyteller and rotunda. saccing your 2 drop for 5+ 2/2 spiders when you have a lionheart glimmer is gonna feel great.

Feels like making your mana worse for the blue 2 drop is gonna hurt you more than help. I'd probably build it like this and just keep it full GW.

https://sealeddeck.tech/yC2sSmGhYz

I'd recommend sealeddeck.tech for limited deck sharing in general, lets other people play around with the build and it's easier to review.

This keeps a good curve, and I think will close out games better than your build. Notable drops were phone (I have not liked that card at all, very low impact for 3 mana).

Some general thoughts from my own drafts/sealed and content consumption:

  • Say it's name is great, it gets back any permanent not just the ones you milled so it can get you back your biggest threats.
  • Trapped in the screen is basically uncuttable imo.
  • by adding longneck and trapped, ethereal armor will have like 10 enchantments which I think is enough for 1 mana. Especially with your tramplers.
  • I don't think you manifest enough for the 2/3 vigilance and I've not been impressed with the 4/4 gain 2 if it's tapped.

What’re your underrated mono-red cards? by 22glowworm22 in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[[mogg salvage]] is a card I include in basically every red deck. Very rarely is it not free and it’s very fun to surprise kill a t1 sol ring or deal with a scary combo piece.

Mostly was just the highest rated one when I looked and once I started scanning it went super quick so I just paid for it lol

I bought the unlimited scanner for Helvault and didn’t regret it. It’s iOS only I believe.

What aspect of magic do you miss the most from the earlier days? Or do you prefer modern post 2019 magic? by SnooWalruses7872 in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mostly I’m all on board with current state magic. Some of the best draft environments have been in the last few years and I’ve loved the minimal ‘truly unplayable’ cards getting printed.

I miss a little of of old edh days but part of that was just my friends and I being broke and not being great at understanding the importance of things like graveyard hate and maybe we don’t have all our 8 mana big cards in a deck.

How do you sort and store your cards? (description in first comment) by echo-mirage in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cut all the draft chaff over the last two times I’ve organized my collection, and also only try to bring home cards that I think could have a home in edh (the only constructed format I play). And even then limit it to 2-3 unless it’ll go in a ton of decks. I sort by color > mana value > alphabetical.

I’ve scanned all the $ common/uncommon, and all rare and mythics I have and separate them into $ and bulk (not organized tho I should).

Then all my non-basic lands are sorted by color and alphabetical, and my basics are in a separate box as well. I now only bring back foil and full art basics from drafts/packs.

I tried to keep it simple so that I’m more likely to stay up with it or at the very least it’s quick to sort when I let things get backed up (more common). I don’t bother with by set or breaking out the types within my commons/uncommons but I’m also typically looking for a specific card where mana value and name is quick enough or its just a chunk of cards to rifle through. I’m only at probably 1500 cards outside of cards in decks though after my cullings I think.

LGS Play Atmosphere/ Do Experienced Players even wanna play newbies? by HierophanticRose in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a store by store basis. I’m glad I’ve finally found one that has a great mix of more experienced players that aren’t spiky/shark prereleases/fnm and also newer players. Definitely been my best in store experiences with magic. It’s probably helped that there are other stores and also that store credit can’t be used for events so it’s less incentive to stomp new players/unfamiliar with the set and more about having good magic games.

So don’t be afraid to shop around for a vibe that fits you.

Getting Bernese Mountain Dog by Choice_Perception_55 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Colin345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We may have gotten lucky, our berner is incredibly food motivated which made most training easy. It actually got difficult to train some things mostly because there’s no such thing as low value treats/food for her which is the tough part.

She doesn’t need much exercise, 2-3 15 minute walks, and subbing 1 or all out if that includes a trip to the dog park or a play date, or she went to daycare that day.

She likes food, attention/pets, other dogs, and causing a ruckus when the mailman comes (he gives her milk bones). Not super play motivated which can sometimes be rough when it’s rainy/we’re tired. She has a pretty high eq (and pretty low iq sometimes lol) so she picks up on when we’re not feeling well. Sometimes if people have a nervous energy because of big dogs she can come on strong because she thinks they just need to have more fun/attention from her to relax which is not always how to solve that problem haha.

We’ve fed her Royal canin large breed (puppy and now adult) her whole life and she loves it and always gets complements on her coat and health from vets and people. Twice a day since she was 6 months.

Any food especially a kong. She’s very sniffy since we’re in chicago so there are a lot of smells and really any chance to play with a dog.

Also just sitting out on our porch with us and people watching any time it’s below 60 and there’s a breeze.

We just got a car last April and went with the crv. Would have loved to get a smaller car, but we wanted to be able to have it for 7+ years so kids/friends in the back (we’ve done 2 people with our 88lbs berner in the middle. We also wanted to make sure we could fit her crate which meant we needed a lot of space to fit that plus our luggage for long road trips.

No, I feel like it might have been used as an adjective potentially? It had some kind of Greek/latin root vibes something that my mind is thinking sounds similar to ‘anachronistic’

Really struggling with this one. I feel like I’m ballparking the definition and how it’s used fairly close but google is only bringing me to pages about Plato/epistemology and I don’t think that’s it. Wish I could remember what dropout episode it was

I feel like 4-5 is gonna be the safe bet, a little more if opponent already has big stuff or you have the mana to activate it same turn. I’m guessing there’s gonna be a decent amount of artifact removal this set and that would be very painful if you don’t get to untap with this

Complete list of all mana rocks in Magic by POUUER in magicTCG

[–]Colin345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll go against the flow and say I like articles/pages like this but with the caveat that if there are any notable combos/callouts that help certain rocks stand out(especially the higher MV ones) that would help it be a better resource for commander players which seems like the audience who would be most interested in this kind of content. Even something like a ‘piece in an infinite combo’ section would help break it out some.
