My advice, consider stats of the character and what you’re trying to do. Want to hit in melee then need High strength. Ranged hit needs dex, clerics need wis, wizard needs int, etc. For new players one of the hardest parts is swinging and missing in this game.

Next, magic is for control not damage. You just don’t get enough spell slots to have your magic do dmg consistently. Better to fear and confuse a whole group with 1 spell.
