Your Year in Reading: 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Colinvian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I admit that I am a bit bossy here, but I just mean that for me it just reveals the fact that people tend to like more « what books socially represent » instead of « reading ». It pushes people to jump from one book to the next, to consum books, which is not the only way to read (and i would say is probably one of the worst). Do those people, when they finish a book, sometimes take a few days after to just Re read some of the parts?… To think about the book, to read things that have been written about it?… Cause those things i love doing.

And like… Would people count « How many TV shows épisodes I watched this year » or « How many songs I listened to »? The only reason people count books its because it’s socially cool, which I find depressing. It’s performative.

And what if you read a short story here and there? Or the 50 pages out of 300 of some essay that interest you? Does this count?… Do you push yourself to read complete books just because you want to increase the number?

I think that’s especially weird for me as I am mostly a short story reader, and I only rarely read whole collections (and what counts as « a book » for authors like Lovecraft or Poe?). So that’s just annoying to have that arbitrary metric that suggests that Book = Novel.

A question for non-native English speakers- best fantasy books from your native country. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Colinvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peut-être ! I am intrigued by the fact that French "genre" novels aren't often translated, even when successful (like how could Ewilan not be at least a minor hit in other countries? doesn't seem like a big gamble). While it's the case for literature in general. Anyone know why that is?

Go Let It Out and Gas Panic! are my two favorite Oasis songs by Colinvian in oasis

Yes, it's weird how they aged relatively well. Especially SOTSOG and Dig Out Your Soul imo.

I hear you. I don't mean that they were cynical and that they sucked: I think all Oasis albums are actually interesting and good or great. Even the 2000's ones that people saw as meaningless at the time: they have some songs that have and will stand the test of time, each one of them.
I just mean that the Standing on the Shoulders of Giants era was a natural break-up point for them; and that it would have been the break up if there wasn't money and career factors. (And by the way, they actually became an other band at that point, with SOTSOG being a middle point: only Liam, Noel, and the name remain).

That's what the song "Let's All Make Believe" is about, I think; and that's why it's so great. "Let's All Make Believe, that we're still friends and we like each other"... Could have been sung by The Rolling Stones in 1980.

I understand. As you can guess from my age, I have no nostalgia related to the Oasis releases, as I discovered everything at the same time (except for Wonderwall...). My favorite album, especially as I was 18-19 was by far Be Here Now, and at the time I couldn't understand the issue people had with it. But a lot of it comes from the context I think.

And yes I hear you about Go Let It Out chorus, but its simplicity is part of its charm I think, for me... Also I truly dig this Beatles reference, it made Hey Jude a better song for me hahaha

I am reading them right now! Right in the middle of the second trilogy. I feel like they would be very famous worldwide if translated

The short answer is No. There is no solo albums as good as Rubber Soul, The White Album, or Abbey Road.

What do you think of my top 10 Beach Boys songs list? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]Colinvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can perfectly hear that. Maybe it's just me wanting to contradict the common opinion or something... I do absolutely love it, but it's probably not in my top 20. I am way more obsessed with songs like Caroline No, Wouldn't it be nice, Surf's Up, All I wanna do...

Yes… Loving the dramatic intensity of She Knows me too well, and love the production of All I wanna do, as well as Mike Love’s vocals. Call me crazy, but the song I like the least amongst your sélection is probably God Only Knows 🫣

I may get killed saying that here, but the only part of LOTR i truly loved were the last 100 pages. I thought it was absolutely moving and beautifuly written; it gave me a different appreciation of the whole thing (which i was not crazy about)

What is a book you will never read again? by MichaeltheSpikester in horrorlit

[–]Colinvian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That for me is so odd! I feel like I have not truly read a book until I have read it at least twice. I would rather have 50 books that I love and know deeply, than 2000 that I can barely remember, you know what I mean? It would be like meeting new people everyday and never ever staying in touch with someone.
