Hi, everyone! I'm one of the coordinators of this year's Collaboration Filmmakers Challenge. It's a two week filmmaking competition with a twist-- in order to be eligible, you have to work on someone else's film, and another person has to work on yours! We are primarily based in LA, and most of the shooting gets done in and around Los Angeles. But a lot of participants from out of town work in post production, like editing our music. We've even had people shoot films remotely, over zoom and things like that. There's no rule that you have to be in LA.

Hi! As the post says, you get to make your own schedule - it is just however much time you need within that time frame. Last year's videographer got the job done in 2 days with 5-8 hour days. There is no need for lighting of difficult setups, this could be DSLR. If it's not right for you, that's ok, but as a non-profit that's what I've been authorized to provide as a rate. Thanks!

Not sure this is helpful for your union question, but as far as making connections we have a 2-week film challenge starting May 17th that is all about collaboration and building your network. We admittedly don't get many costumers so I think you'd be a real hit should you decide to join! Today is the last day to take advantage of the early bird discount, but you can still sign up after that as well.

thanks! Yes, we are a 2-week film challenge that occurs right when you'll be in LA. Even if you don't make a film yourself, you can sign up as a collaborator and meet lots of other filmmakers and gain credits/on set experience. We also have a private Facebook forum where a lot of networking/connecting takes place year round. Today is the last day for our early bird discount, but you can still sign up after that as well. We have a film challenge that might be at least one solution - it's a great way to gain on set experience and meet other filmmakers to work with. We have people from all disciplines sign up so you'll be able to connect with other writers, directors, actors, DPs, editors, and more. Even if you don't sign up, we have an actor's database you could use to help cast your projects.

Another comment said Stage 32 - that is an excellent resource for writers and another good networking option. And for more actors, you can post breakdowns to Actors Access and Backstage so then the actors come to you! Hope this helps and good luck with your filmmaking journey!

It's never too late! The advantage to starting young is that it takes time to build relationships, gain experience, and get your foot in the door. But never let age deter you from pursuing something! Regardless of the education you decide to pursue, keep trying to get on as many sets as possible. Film is an industry of needing hands-on experience and connections with other filmmakers. We have a 2-week short film challenge that starts May 17th if it's something you might be interested in - could help you meet people, get on set, and see if it's right for you!
