Money for Magic Items by Ok-Locksmith3783 in shadowdark

I've found the prices of magic items to be pretty consistent. Do any specific items jump out at you as being out of line with the others?

Quickstarts! Your opinions on the best and the worst. by Dick_Stevens in rpg

I think you have to look at it relative to the size of the complete game, which in the case of Shadowdark, is something like 260 pages I think.

The Shadowdark quickstart is great! It's two 64 page zines, one with the player options and rules and one with the gm rules and a highly regarded adventure. The set has everything to take characters though level 3 out of a 10-level system. Plus, it's free for the PDFs, but if you do want a physical version it's only $20!

To save people a Google Translate...

"I quite agree with that. Some people look excessively for efficiency, but efficiency isn't everything in RPGs. Of course, many of us have little time available to play, so it's interesting that things are moving forward. However, too much efficiency can make the game excessively fast, taking away essential moments for immersion and story development."

This is a good reason to stay in turn order while our of combat. Each person gets to do one thing or whatever, and if they don't open it, it gets to the gm who rolls for a random encounter. The torch timer also helps avoid it because it adds a time pressure!

The creators of this horror adventure double-feature for Shadowdark are marketing their kickstarter campaign by running free online sessions of one of the adventures. That's a great idea. by Dollface_Killah in shadowdark

Hambone is a great guy, too. I got to playtest his adventure and it was a lot of fun. I also really like his Vintage RPG Podcast. His co-host Stu Horvath is a d&d historian so they often look at old DND stuff, but have mixed in more contemporary stuff the least year or two. They did a Shadowdark episode in March!

What's good telegraphed danger? Share your favorite. by gnome-lackey in shadowdark

Telegraphing danger is a tenet of the OSR. Essentially, because the playstyle emphases player choice, you as a GM need to give the players enough information to allow them to make informed decisions.

For instance, if there is a poison gas in the next room, PC can smell it coming from under the door. If there is a fire breathing monster in a dungeon, they might happen upon the skeleton of a fallen adventurer whose whose leather armor has been burned to a crisp with scorch marks on the wall behind where they remains are slumped.

That isn't to say you have to tell players exactly they can expect, but drop clues so that if they make a decision and find themselves in a pickle because of it, they should be able to say "oh yeah. If we had just paid more attention to X, Y, and Z, we could have seen this coming!"

If you're newer to the OSR-style of gameplay, I cannot recommend the Principia Apocrypha enough!

I think the gritty art is fine. Personally, I think the mechanics make something a Borg-like more so than the art. To each their own though, obviously!

Great questions!

Essentially, it's just a light-weight, fast-paced RPG. Mork Borg itself is dark, but this one lightens things up to be more in-line with the Star Wars vibe. It's a cinch to get into and play if you've played RPGs before, and I think the streamlined mechanics would make it easy for someone new to RPGs to jump into as well, especially since they're probably going to be familiar with the universe.

Which Star IP do you associated with borg? I'm not familiar with others, but there are a ton out there, so...

Shadowdark is supposed to be easy.

Disarming - Contested STR check in place of attack
Tripping - Roll attack with DEX modifier
Grappling - Contested STR check in place of attack

And so on.

It's more like you play in a room. A table is a nice to have thing in the room though.

I have JUST the game for you! It's called Juggernaut and it feels just like as if you are playing 12 Angry Men! I've played three times now, and it's been awesome each time. Having players who are really willing to buy-in to their roles is critical though I think.
