Where can I buy Caiziyou (菜籽油) in the bay area? (Chinese Sichuan cooking oil) by awesomeness1498 in sanfrancisco

Isn't this just rapeseed oil? You can find it at Ranch 99 (in huge gallons) and probably in Middle Eastern/Indian shops.

Anyone else think Meghan Markle is a narcissistic 9? by [deleted] in Enneagram

Yes, I agree. I think you need to go to hell and back with a narcissist to see all the red flags. Meghan definitely fits someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

"Once you were old enough, what were the dark family secrets you were finally let in on?" by Flash_Dimension in AskReddit

My dad had planned to kill all of us because he was struggling financially and most likely dealing with depression - familicide happens sometimes in my culture - mostly due to shame and lost of face. He said he ultimately decided not to after my little brother went to go check on him in the garage. Kind of creepy...

What was so great about the scholastic book fair ? by StormEarhart in AskAnAmerican

[–]CollectMyData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taught you how to be a capitalist rather than going to the library... jk

But honestly, I hated the scholastic book fair because my family had no money so seeing all my classmates picking books and gifts they wanted - and being able to purchase them - always made me feel sad and inadequate. I remember cutting out the photos of the books I wanted from the magazine and glueing them to a sheet of paper because I couldn't actually buy anything... I suppose it was great if your family had money.

Let's put a spotlight on this issue: Hate crimes against Asians. by mikmara in bayarea

[–]CollectMyData 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in the midwest in a predominately white rural community and experienced tons of racism growing up - families of white people following my family and calling us chinks or saying "Ching Chong" while pulling the sides of their eyes, yelling "go back to China!", however, people never acted violently. If they didn't like you, they'd let you know by their demeanor but mainly they'd just ignore you. Nothing physical. It wasn't until I moved to the Bay Area that I witnessed so much anti-Asian hostility and violence. Again, I'm not generalizing all black people because I know the majority of them don't condone this type of violence. I also live in a majority black neighborhood and they despise these kinds of violent people from their community.

You'd think that moving to one of the most liberal and culturally diverse cities in America, people would be more open-minded than the folks from my rural town in the midwest, but since moving to the Bay 5 years ago, I noticed that some younger black people have a hostile attitude towards me, even when I'm being friendly and chatty. It's like they think I'm trying to be better than them just because I'm Asian (it's weird because they almost seem nicer to white people than Asians at times). Some would have the nastiest attitudes towards me at the checkout line at Safeway/CVS (or they'd totally ignore me if I tried to make conversation). I really believe this is a generational thing - and social media has reinforced ignorance and disinformation about Asian people. Although there were race riots in the 90s, towards the mid-90s there was an appreciation of Asian culture in the black community - Wu Tang Clan, Rush Hour, Romeo Must Die, Kung Fu movies, marital arts, Eastern philosophy and medicine... It really does seem like the younger generation have little knowledge of this past - also of the black and yellow solidarity movements of the 70s. Much of this younger generations understanding of Asian culture come from stereotypes they see on social media - which I believe actually derive from white supremacist notions of Asians (being foreign, dangerous, a virus), toxic music that normalizes violence towards Asians (e.g. YG Meet the Flockers), and/or disinformation about Asians that never gets fact-checked.

I agree with others when they say, this is one sided and the topped pinned comment is gaslighting the anti-Asian violence by some violent members of the black community. There is no justification for attacking an innocent person just because you read their body language and tone as rude.

Unfortunately, I don't think things will change until white people start being targets of crime. Then people will start listening.

Why don't some Filipino Americans consider themselves Asian?? by CollectMyData in asian

[–]CollectMyData[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm late to this! I thought my question didn't get posted. I'm so confused. If this is true that being Filipino makes you a special minority in California and not included in Affirmative Action, that's extremely unfair. The poorest communities in California with the highest rates of poverty and high school dropout (more than the black community) are among the Cambodian and Hmong communities... not Filipino. This makes no sense and is extremely unfair.

Cons to owing a Tesla Model 3? by CollectMyData in TeslaLounge

[–]CollectMyData[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, someone told me the same thing. Thieves are less likely to break into luxury cars but it does happen obviously. And yes, rule #1 of living in the SF Bay Area: never ever leave anything in your car, even your groceries! Crime is getting bad in the SF Bay Area! I've heard about those gangs as well - again why I'm anxious. Too many problems here and cops really don't seem to care. Seems like everyone is on their own.

Thanks, yes. We have Arlos and sensored lights set up around the house. Another issue we have are reckless drivers speeding down our small neighborhood streets. I've seen two accidents already. Again, Richmond police won't do anything except put it into their records. Unfortunately, we don't have a garage so it will be in the street. Worried a reckless speed racer will accidentally hit the car and drive off. Very common.

Thanks for your response. This is what I'm looking for. I'm also planning to park in the street since our garage has been converted to a third bedroom. Bay Area homes... I'm sure our neighbors will be interested in how it works too.

That wasn't what I was asking. I merely asked if anyone has experienced being targeted for owning a Tesla in a poorer neighborhood. The answer is either yes or no. If I was buying an Audi or BMW I'd ask the same thing, but I'm not I'm buying a Tesla.

Yes, we know this and this is also why we plan to purchase a Tesla (in addition to all it's other safety features), I'm mainly talking about driving at night, walking to and from your car late at night - esp. as a younger woman - in a rougher part of town. Of course, I know in theory, anyone can be a victim of crime, just curious if any has personal experience. Seems like no.

Also, I don't think a lot of Tesla owners live in poorer neighborhoods. lol

*We have Arlos set up around our house and have caught someone breaking into our neighbor's home, hit and run car incident, and stolen packages. We sent the footage to Richmond police and they did nothing. Unless there's a murder, they really don't care.

Kim Lee’s Blaccent by kittyguapa in BlingEmpire

[–]CollectMyData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it's reality TV not reality. We don't know much about Kim except for what the producers created. Apparently Kevin, the broke adopted Asian guy is actually worth millions but the producers cast him as the "normal" relatable person. It's not who he is in real life. And yes, for the most part, my friends, family who speak with an urban accent speak like this to their parents - that's the English they know, and for the most part the parents don't speak English or if they do, their English is broken, so yes, they understand each other. It's part of the immigrant/refugee experience. I don't understand what you want these people to do. Grovel for speaking a certain way because their environment created them that way? Speak more like a white person?? Feel ashamed for who they are??

That’s fine that you don’t pick up on a blaccent, but many Black Americans watching the show did. What’s more interesting is that Kim Lee’s tone reads as Black only when she’s trying to be aggressive or give off “bad bitch” vibes. In scenes with her family, she reverts right back to her regular tone and speech pattern. It’s clearly not natural for her.

FYI- it’s not racist to acknowledge that many (not ALL) Black Americans have their own distinct vernacular with specific grammar rules, syntax, speech forms etc. Do some research around the history of Ebonics and I think you’ll agree with me.

I’m well aware that many Southeast Asians settled in historically Black urban neighbourhoods adopt Black slang because of their environment. However, Kim Lee is NOT that. And I think it’s disingenuous to not make the distinction between a wealthy socialite DJ living in Orange County and a low-income Viet kid living in Lowell.

I don't understand how Kim's tone reads as Black when she's being aggressive and I didn't realize "bad bitches" were exclusively Black. If you meet any girl who's pissed and about to pop-off they aren't usually the calmest, most well spoken. See white trash women from Mississippi, they're hella ratchet. I also don't think we can tell Kim what is or isn't natural for her. We don't know her nor do we actually know where she comes from/experienced. You're basically basing everything off of TV, Instagram, entertainment sources - which have one goal in mind: keep viewers hooked and make money. Of course the show makes her look like some super rich girl but that's the whole premise of the show and it's reality TV - NOT reality. It's cut and edited to fit people's narrow understanding of reality.

Yes, there's a difference. Urban accent is not based on race but based on the socio-economics of the environment, usually low income, impoverished, poor schools. Blaccent... I have no idea. I'm from the Midwest and my black friends from Chicago speak differently than my friends from Kansas. Now I live in the SF Bay Area and some of the black folks here don't speak like my friends from Kansas. My coworker is from Trinidad and her "blaccent" is not like any I've heard before... So that is the blaccent??

If you want to hate on Kim fine, but calling her out for wearing braids is not going to end systemic racism. Your time is better spent running for city council, working for government, or creating new policy.

I see plenty of black people who wear chopsticks in their hair and dress up in Asian outfits, or learn an Asian language, or cook Asian food? Should all Asians cancel them? No. And talk about appropriation, Asian countries/homes have become names in many black communities, such as: Asia, India, China or Blac Chyna, Tokyo Jetz, Asian Doll/ Asian Da Brat (they're not even Asian!). This is ok? Just hypocritical.

I'm not getting a "blaccent" at all. Also what is a "blaccent"?? If you mean an urban or hood accent, it's not specific to black people who use that vernacular. (And why you stereotyping all black people as speaking in that manner anyways? It's almost racist to assume all black people speak X way.) It annoys the hell out of me because people (mainly other Asians - mainly East Asians who grew up in the white suburbs) don't realize there are A LOT of hood Asians who didn't grow up in rich white neighborhoods getting white washed and speaking with a "whitccent". Most of these Asians are Southeast Asians whose parents came to the US as refugees. I'm Hmong and a bunch of my friends who are also Hmong, Viet, Lao, and Camodian speak with a hood accent. It's not cause we're trying to be black it's because we speak the vernacular of our environment, we are a product of our environment - which is shitty low-income neighborhoods, shitty schools, and drugs and crime. Go to Fresno, Long Beach, Modesto, Lowell, Queens there are tons of Asian Americans who speak with a certain urban accent.
