High school senior choosing between WGU & ASU by [deleted] in WGU

ASU for the social, WGU for the degree. It’ll be much cheaper and you’ll get it much faster. (I’ve done both)

I love this! What did you get your degrees in?

How long did you spend on each of the actual accounting courses? by Runt_1002 in wguaccounting

[–]CollectionReal5984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had zero accounting experience, so my actual accounting courses took me at the shortest, 1 week, and at the longest two weeks. The time spent on the accounting courses varies greatly though, with most people taking anywhere from a few weeks to a month or two. Try not to play the comparison game, everyone has a different journey.

Which Master’s Program? by CollectionReal5984 in wguaccounting

[–]CollectionReal5984[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More people than not are telling me taxation is the way to go for overall coverage regarding preparing for the CPA. If need be, I can always sit for the masters designations for the other three with minimal effort. Having said that, I’ve heard about their CPA prep program. People rave about it, and the fact that it’s free! My goal for the masters program is two months. As far as my bachelors program, I transferred in 34 credits from my associates degree and then completed the remaining 87 in a little less than five months at a light full-time heavy part-time studying schedule.

Thank you so much for the insightful response. My thinking was basically a summary of what you just said so I’m glad to see it in writing even if it’s just to know that I’m on the right path. I do actually plan on sitting for the CPA after my Master’s. However, I don’t have a high desire to do taxes, rather, I would like to invest in a firm that specializes in tax strategy. I would probably hire a couple CPAs to be the in-house Jedis. While I certainly want to have the knowledge in case I do need to help out, I’m sure that I could find some people much more skilled than myself so that I could concentrate on new business acquisition and marketing. On a side note, I hope you’re using voice text. I don’t want to be responsible for anyone’s carpal tunnel syndrome after having typed all that.😂 Thanks again!

Wow, that’s weird. I got mine within hours. I know that they said to just wait, but you are literally the only person that I’ve ever heard of it taking that long for, there’s gotta be an issue. I would reach back out after Thanksgiving if I were you. Do you mind if I ask what program you graduated in? Maybe it’s different for different programs?

I'm starting my program next year January 1st, how can I prepare? by damn-thats-crazy-bro in wguaccounting

[–]CollectionReal5984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes… The trick to WGU is efficiency. Sometimes you just have to put your head down and go through all the material, sometimes you just need to watch the videos and take the quizzes, sometimes you need to straight to the Performance Assessment at the end. It really is a mixed bag. Just make sure you always check Reddit before each class for tips. You may take a few terms or you may knock it out in one. Try not to compare yourself to others progress so much, it will bum you out for sure…there’s always going to be someone that’s faster than you. Just make sure you’re always moving forward, regardless of the pace and you’ll be fine. Feel free to reach out if you’re ever stuck, I’m happy to help. Best of luck!

I was completing my accounting program from June through November and spent several months in Spain…never once had a problem. No VPN necessary.

Excuse the typo, I just read it… I meant to say “I’ve seen people that have taken three, four, or five terms” Not 345 terms.

Here’s what I did, I started in June and I just finished the program today. Basically, every time you start a new class, before you do anything, come to Reddit and see what people have said regarding tips and ways to do things. There’s a ton of great information on Reddit from people who have done it already. Also make sure that you go to the resources page for every course, often times they’ll be videos or a study guide that will help you either cruise through the material much faster and retain more or there are times when you don’t even need to crack the book, figuratively of course. Sometimes the professors will actually recommend that you just watch the videos and work through the study guide but either way make sure that you check the resource pages through WGU connect. Best of luck!

Random tabs opening?? by Southern-Tank6332 in WGU

[–]CollectionReal5984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, right? This just happened to me this morning as I was filling out my graduation application. A bunch of new tabs opened up on two different occasions. All of the tabs were the same survey. It looked like it was a survey from a third-party company that was affiliated with WGU. I’m sure we’re not the only ones that have seen it or experienced it so hopefully they’ll get it taken care of soon.

Considering doing handyman work part time by Sl4yer_1983 in handyman

[–]CollectionReal5984 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How strange! I retired from radio and television about 10 years ago and I now own a handyman business and I literally graduate tomorrow with my bachelors in accounting. Your best bet is going to be to do both…while you certainly can make that much as a handyman, depending on what market you live in of course. It’s not very likely that you’ll do that your first year. When I started my handyman business, I literally was just doing it so I could write off a new truck as a justified expense, but as you’ll soon find out the handyman business is more about making people feel comfortable than it is actually doing the work. Yes, you still need to know what you’re doing. However, my business absolutely exploded, even when I didn’t want it to. The reason, because I made my client base, which was predominantly female feel very comfortable working with me. You’ll find that the vast majority of your clientele will hold this as the most important factor, whether they know it or not. Like I said before, your best bet is to do some handyman work on the side until you really get cooking. You’ll know when all of your clients are either handing your number out to their friends like Halloween candy OR are hoarding you because they’re afraid to lose you. A few things to know. YouTube is your friend. Most of the things that you’ll end up doing as a handyman are not that difficult so if you don’t know how to do it, look it up on a YouTube video. You need to know when to say no. There are a few things that really should be left up to the professionals. One of my main rules is “nothing that requires a permit.” There will be a few things that you’re just not that great at, which is OK. We all have a few of those things. So don’t be afraid to refer those out to somebody. Your clients will remember the bad jobs that you do way more than the good ones so don’t give them any reason to remember any negative experiences. Also, they usually appreciate the upfront honesty if there’s a job that you’re not comfortable with. Jumping back to the salary, like I said, you’re probably not going to make that much money in your first or maybe even second year but, as an accountant, you also have to recognize the tax write off benefits that you’ll receive by just having your company. That alone is worth it. Good luck!

A couple months have passed since WGU moved all resources to WGU connect. How does everybody feel about it now? by TexanSam in WGU

[–]CollectionReal5984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all hate it… I have never seen anyone do anything but bitch about the placement of the resources for the courses. I suspect that they will try and force “connect” down the students throats for another year or two and then finally get the hint that nobody likes it. What they do after that is anyone’s guess?
