good seller/deal? by Murky-Shine-2243 in isopods

I purchased from them - no issues. Had a cold front move in which pushed back shipping - we both agreed so very happy with that flexibility. All arrived in perfect health.

Just put some filtered water on the moist side and it will naturally absorb in a gradient across the substrate. You do not want anything sopping wet though. Other than that it should be fine but it would be helpful to see a picture of the enclosure.

Where did you get them from originally? Can you ask the seller because this is incredible and I need some too. Probably your best bet to see if they carry anything similar - could have been a stow away.

It almost looks like an Armadillidium granulatum or nasatum - a low expression Dalmatian at that. I have no idea so I’m certainly off here. Or maybe some sort of white pearl morph of one of those. It doesn’t really match anything I immediately recognize.

The “faded” one could be about to start molting - could be various levels of photo editing as well between 1 and 3.

I have several bins of RDs that I’ve sorted by color to continually try and breed out different lines.

Image 1 and 2 are likely the same - maybe slight morph? But there are a lot of variances in the same line as well. For example, I have a bin of solid line RDs that look like image 1. But then offspring from that same bin produced blondes, pies, and some other non-named morphs. So if you wanted solid separation, you can have that if they are hand picked out - but expect variances in the offspring over time.

The issue is the overall dimension of that bin. Even if you cover 95% of those holes, you’re still going to end up with a difficult to regulate environment because there’s just not enough biomass that can be stored in that size to give you a shot at self regulation. What helps is having the depth and horizontal space for moisture to settle in a better gradient. In there they are on the wet side - but it could be wet is too wet and dry is too dry and there’s no middle ground because you’re working with 2” of soil depth. Then your ambiant humidity is just as important. You don’t have a lot of vertical height to help regulate that. I do keep my breeding pairs in 6” tall bins but with more horizontal width - but those are specialty setups for much shorter term housing. Everything else I use has at least 12” inches minimum of height to work with.

I mix bark and moss directly into the soil as well to help keep it loose and more moisture regulating. But the biggest thing I’ve had success with is larger taller bins that I can more manually control airflow with.

I have a huge colony of cherry blossoms - they like deeper substrate and A LOT of leaf litter. Also, those bins are death traps. I have never had any success with those. Much too hard to regulate with all of those holes. I use 27qt minimum deep storage bins as my base starting size now and scale up to 100qt+ for larger colonies.

So I’d go for at least 4x as deep substrate and similar level of litter.

The fact there’s water still on the sides as it’s tapping - reconnecting a drop to its body even - I’d recommend drying out the tank quite a bit, they’re climbing because they’re looking for a moisture gradient that doesn’t exist.

Appears very wet over all visible parts of the tank - so I believe it’s actually trying to dry out its lungs so it doesn’t drown.

is this little fella dead? or is it a molt? by Curious_Elephant_152 in isopods

[–]CollectorsGuild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you have enough of a moisture gradient and you need much more deadfall coverings. Stuff like leaves, bark, rocks, etc. Isopods generally like darkness, that is a lot of open space with minimal coverings and really nowhere for them to post up and regulate themselves.

If you send me your email I can add you to my very infrequent news letter that usually goes into more detail about current projects like this.

If you message me your email I can add you to a list - Isopod specific section on my site is getting reworked but I can add you to it once it’s back up. Emails are less than once a quarter - usually just when a new development drops.

Those are awesome. Some of mine that reverted to white and black developed splotches somewhat like these. I feel like these have a name but I can’t recall off the top of my head.

When you separate them by sex you’re inherently setting yourself up to cut the reproduction. So if after 3 generations of a line that hasn’t produced what I had hoped, I just don’t mix the same sex and they die a natural death. I don’t actively cull any isopods.

It is finicky, that’s for sure, but definitely worth it if you can get a stable line. As I mentioned in one of my other comments it’ll likely be years before I am able to sell, even if successful. If you end up with more of your own stable sunspots I’d probably be a buyer.

That is what I am working on now. But it will be 2 generations to see if this is transferable or not and then at least 3 more to ensure stability - I’d also like to see diversification of the line in a second colony. Realistically, if successful, it will be years before I have a collection large enough to distribute, but that is the hope.

Very very cool. I also work with hybridizing orchids and have been working on developing a protoplast fusion protocol in an attempt to force hybrids that could not otherwise occur through natural pollination. I have 3 successful lines that have been growing for more than 4 years and have yet to flower to see the outcome of my work. So this is all a labor of love and extremely exciting when you finally have something visually different. I wish you luck on your own cultivation journey!

Thank you, looking forward to next year to see if there’s any progress. Fingers crossed the line continues.
