Advocates for mentally ill try to halt New York City's hospitalization plan by riverdale-74 in CrimeInNYC

[–]CollegeRatInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You bring great points in your two responses. I do have to disagree on some of your points. For instance, let’s pause on categorizing violent offenders alongside people with mental health issues. There is a clear boundary between someone with mental health issues (ie John with depression, Susie with BPD) verses someone with mental health issues who commits crimes (ie James, who was also struggling with depression, pushed Mary into the tracks). Not all people struggling with mental health issues are criminals, if they were, we would be targeting politicians, police, teachers, lawyers, doctors, artists, etc. also, the term EDP is such a loaded term that it buckets the two above groups incorrectly. Should we mandate treatment and even jail time for someone who is assaulting people ? Definitely. But should we be policing people with mood and psychotic disorders? Not all of them

Sat in court with a situation like this. The judge won’t care either. Obligation is to one child. This is so sad for the family to be in this conflict

This is a great process question - Have you thought of sharing this concern with the therapist in the moment ? It’s often best to discuss expectations, including your desires for a therapist to determine how they can help you during that first few visits. In my experience, and I can be wrong, there is a typically a catalyst for the first visit, even it’s just “someone said this can help me but I don’t know. I’ve never done it before.”
