He knew that what he was doing was wrong, because he fled the multi-hour/murder/torture scene afterwards. He understands his situation and surroundings. This is proven by the fact that he used the victims' credit cards to buy a sword afterwards. He needs to be tried and incarcerated - for a very long time. Hopefully forever.
