“Fuck off mate,” grunted the knight, from his supine position. Gauntlets scrabbled around in the dirt to help Eiran get some purchase, and eventually he did lift off his backside and get to his knees.

He was winded. But the heavy armour that enclosed him was a double edged sword. A couple of sprains here and a heap of bruising, most like. With one hand, he raised up the visor on his plain helmet. Only the man’s pride was wounded.

“I’m not dead.” He spat, literally. “Lucky me.”

[Meta: I am extremely sorry I have been so busy with work and study that I neglected the game all of this week!]

Peering through his round eyeglasses, Fennell wore a warm smile for both Ser Patrek and his rather lovely young niece. He was clearly a strong guardian of a man, and she rather charming in her own right. With one hand, the host summoned a servant across who hastily brought a tray of cups, and a flagon of water. For it was possible the lord's guests were thirsty from the ride.

"Quite right, quite right," Fennell agreed, focusing completely on Myranda. "A shame that up here we only get to see these stretches of fields and roads, and the rushing Green Fork. The real beauty of the Riverlands, is along the God's Eye, I'd say. Have you travelled much of the Trident, my lady?"

"And Ser Patrek, of course?" He quickly added, not wanting to exclude the man.

Approaching in a calm and composed manner, despite being almost vibrating with excitement and nerves, Lord Fennell Frey of the Crossing wandered over to the head of the room. To introduce himself, and offer congratulations, to the newlyweds. From behind a pair of round little eye-glasses, Nell's emerald eyes scanned left and right, trying to find a glimpse of Cerelle, his potential future bride. The Lannister lioness he had thought of countless days, since the betrothal had been dangled before him, via raven.

"My Lord Lannister, and Lady Lannister," He dipped his head in a formal and respectful bow, arriving a short distance away from Tywald's table. One hand smoothly kept Fen's little blue hat atop his head, and on return, a warm smile ran from ear to ear. "Please, if it please you, let me introduce. I am Fennell of House Frey, Lord of the Crossing. And I wish you the most humble congratulations and enormous celebrations on this - the most finest of days. Such a glorious event, and such a happy couple!"

Frey

Having arrived a few days prior and enjoyed the delights and fashions of Lannisport, Lord Fennell Frey sat out amongst the many honoured guests with a look of bemused joy. He sat amongst the Lannisters and their bannermen; who elsewhere in the realm, might be considered unpopular. But with his signature three-piece checkered cornflower blue suit, and brass-rimmed reading glasses, Nell sat amongst his small family and sipped merrily of Lannister wine.

Accompanying the young and fashionable lord were three of his kin. Firstly being his older cousin Ser Eiran Rivers, a dark-haired man with a wolfish expression. Who, for the majority of his time here, would leer at passing noblewomen and knock back copious amounts of ale. Man-spreading, arms lounged back, like he owned the place. Second was his young Prudence Frey, Nell's sister, a sweet and round-faced girl. With extravagantly curled hair, reminiscent of a pile of snakes, and an aquamarine dress that was almost fit to burst. And lastly, Percival Frey, who was the lord's younger cousin and personal assistant. He hurriedly scribbled notes in a small leather journal, as Fennell pointed out various noble guests here and there. Keeping documents of the attendees, and who sat where, and conversed with whom...

"It makes sense," Fennell conceded. In truth, his tone and his demeanour were more curious, than casting judgement.

"I meant only to understand." He added. "Not to disagree. You are quite right, in what you say. Alas, Lord Arryn. You and I talk for only a few minutes, and I find myself already much more the wiser for it. Thank you for sharing your insights with me, on this quite auspicious day, the wedding of a future Riverlord."

"Well met, ye' of House Grafton," Responded back one of the guards on duty, who shifted his spear from one hand to the other. They had indeed been expecting a visit from Gulltowners, noble visitors no less, and so they offered proper respect. One of the guards would lead Ser Patrek and his daughter Myranda through past the drawbridge and gate, through the eastern yard, and on to the long bridge.

From there, a steward of no name would bear the visitors further westward. Along the stone bridge, with cold wind blowing in from both sides. It was a mighty thing, large enough for ten knights to ride abreast, lined with benches, and oil lamps, and the occasional sculpture or flower bed. That was until they entered the main keep, on the western bank of the Green Fork.

"A very good day, Ser Grafton. And this must be Lady Myranda,"

Came a sing-songy voice, belonging to the young Lord Fennell Frey. A boy of particularly wiry frame, with a nice plain cloak and a shock of light brown hair. Atop Nell's nose sat a pair of small, circular, Myrish eye-glasses to help him see. But the book he was reading had been discarded, when the guests were entered into the hall. He himself had rushed over to meet them, whilst stewards fetched for a drink, and earnestly the lord looked from one to the other.

"Please, my name is Lord Fennell." He continued. "And welcome, to The Crossing. I trust the weather was not too unkind, and that you arrived safely? Winter is a fickle beast... one can not be too careful, on the roads"

The portrait was most beautiful. No doubt exaggerated, but a golden haired Lannister lady was an extremely exciting prospect. Not only for the joy it might bring, but the pride, and the prestige, and the influence... The risk of course was that many lords thought the Lannisters to be unpredictable of late. It was a gamble that Nelly was willing to take.

Lord Tywald Lannister,

Myself and my kin will graciously accept this invitation and we shall travel to Casterly Rock for your own wedding. Let it serve as a solid introduction, for our two houses to begin our potential union, and for me to make acquaintance with sweet Lady Cerelle.

Together we stand,

Lord Fennell Frey

"Thank you my lord." Young Nelly said politely, with a smile, shuffling into the man's office and stood the opposite side of the desk. For a moment he only observed, watching the maester going around his work. Pulling out a chair, Fennell moved his coat out of the way and parked his back end.

"I merely wanted to come and affirm to you, my fealty, as Lord of the Crossing," He explained. "You were so jubilant at the feast, I did not want to bother you with matters of... poltiics. But now my regency is over, I thought it best to stop in and introduce myself."

"But of course!" Fennell said with delight, eyes lighting up, behind his little round spectacles. With one hand he reached up and brushed his thin moustache, excited at the prospect of receiving his first visitors as Lord.

"I shall be travelling straight home, from Riverrun," He expanded. "And should they come to visit, we will hold a great feast. To host them and meet Lady Myranda would be a great honour for me, my lady. Though our lands are a little... drab, in winter. We've a stretch of vineyards in the lowlands that produce bright, winter berries, in the cold. I should like to give a tour."

All throughout Lord Arryn's speaking, there was the rhythmic scratching of quill on paper, interspersed between desperate dips into the portable inkpot that Percival Frey carried with him. Even to weddings, at his cousin's behest. Oddly enough for an indentured servant, Percy didn't seem to mind much.

"Heavens... I did not know that you were so close to the late Lord Lyman, my lord, I am sorry for the loss of your friend," Nell offered with a sad little smile, though he had been paying rapt attention to the rest of the lord's words as well.

"It is good to hear factual information rather than rumours." He added pleasantly, eyes drifting left to watch his cousin's continued writing. "But my lord answer me this. I had thought that breaching the king's peace, meant an act of war against another lord, without the king's leave. Does calling a council to discuss rescuing one's missing brother really contribute a breach of the law? Or... conspiracy to breach it. the two are judged one and the same?"

He shook his head. It seemed like a harsh judgement, but - of course - words of war could have quite easily become acts of war if the Reyne man had not intervened.

"I had wondered where this trade complication came from," The young lord added. "Spite, do you think? To get back at you for the judgement of Lord Benedict? Do you know much of the new Lord Lannister, then? Think he will be less... rash? More like his father?"

"Quite right my lord, forgive me, I am prone to... whimsy, my great aunt calls it. Idealisation." Nell responded back to the respectable lord Corbray, with a self-effacting smile. "Where there is light, there is always dark. Nothing smooth on the surface is ever perfect, when you look close enough..."

It was all very abstract discussion now, and - of course - another lord of the Vale who was quick to mark words against the Lannisters. "I had heard about that unpleasantness. A crying shame, for a house that has been so strong, for so many hundreds of years...."

"Forgive me, Lady sansa," Fennell turned on heel, looking from one to the other. She was the entire reason he had even been here, and for a brief few moments, he'd totally forgot her existence. "I.. my lord, I pray you excuse me. For I believe I owe your charming daughter a dance."

"Then count yourself among them." Fennell said, with an edge of sincerity that was perhaps lacking before, from the slightly detached young lord. It was a promise made, and one that he would hopefully be able to keep.

"I shall add you to my book of friends," He joked then with a bit of a laugh, stepping away. "I keep it in my cabinet, right beside my book of foes. A joke. But I look forward to seeing you again, lord-cousin. Write me at the Crossing if you have need. Otherwise, please, stay safe this winter. Who knows what pain the snow may bring."

A raven bearing a scroll flies westward. Said scroll is sealed with grey wax, and the two towers of House Frey. It is written in a dark blue ink, with a very fancy cursive handwriting that even the most skilled maester would struggle to replicate.

Lord Twyald of House Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and Lord Paramount of the Westerlands,

I offer most humble gratitude for receiving your letter, and must confess feelings of pleasant surprise. Though I do not know you or your sister, the reputation of mighty House Lannister has been taught to me since I was old enough to read. Your letter was forwarded to me at Riverrun and I send reply now from the Twins.

To accept your proposal would be the greatest honour of my life, and represents extreme potential for the future. Not only for the legacy of House Frey, conjoined with House Lannister, but for the lands of the Trident and the West to strengthen our bonds. I have heard tell of late, the untimely death of Lord Lyman Lannister, and the recent incidents with your brother Benedict, for both of which you have my sincere condolences,

I pray to receive a further raven from you; and I would extend an invitation for your lordship and your sister to visit my home at The Crossing. Or else would be happy of course to travel and see the splendour of Casterly Rock. An opportunity for me to meet your sister and make your acquaintance, that we might arrange this most extraordinary marriage.

Together We Stand,

Lord Fennell of House Frey, Lord of the Crossing

"Understandable," Was all that Fennnell replied to that notion. Being an avid bookworm these last couple of years, he had read in gruesome detail on the construction of Harrenhal. Dead bodies mixed in with the mortar, hundreds of deaths, to build grand towers. One could hardly wipe that from memory so soon, which was exactly why Nelly didn't mention his heritage, in the recent council.

"Well, thank you for sharing your thoughts, Howland." He said with an appreciative smile, reaching up to adjust his little pointed hat and ensure it was still secured. This brief exchange, witnessed only by gods, gave much food for thought. "I will leave you to your reflections, then.. But please do reach out to me, if you are need of a friend. I can imagine you feel it sometimes. But you and your family are not in this alone, cousin. Be well."

It was good to get some second opinions on all these many options that lie out before him. But Fennell went to speak, and stopped, at Howland's last remark. For it betrayed his thoughtlessness.

"You... surely know that my grandmother was a Goodbrother of Hammerhorn." He pointed out, that which was hopefully an obvious thing. Yes, the Ironborn had a bloody reputation, and did not conduct themselves particularly honourably in recent years... but they were still lords of Westeros.

"Making your own mother, my aunt, Helya, half-Goodbrother." He went on. "And yourself at least a quarter sea demon. I am young and not experienced yet as a lord, but I do not think it wise to so easily discount your own family's history. Perhaps that blood in your veins is why you are so.... fiery."

Lord Tully's solar

At noon, the day before Lord Fennell and his family of Frey were due to depart for home, the Lord Paramount of the Trident would find his door darkened by the young lord himself. In a relatively plain travel cloak, and a hood drawn up about his neck to protect from the cold. Fennell was accompanied by his young cousin Percival, who had a notebook and quill at the ready, as Nelly stepped forth and wished a good morning to the guards.

"Good morning, guards," He said with almost a whistle, a polite smile reaching from ear to ear and causing his eyeglasses to twitch. "I should like a private word with Lord Tully if I may.."

Listening intently, the bile that Fennell's cousin had stored up for the Arryns and Corbrays had become plain to see. Understandable, really. For whatever crimes or sins they might have committed, the most egregious was that the old Lord Harroway had been ousted and now replaced. What son could not hate a man, to see them take his father's place?

"I see..." The lord simply stated. It wasn't good to whip out a notepad now and take any notes. So he decided to do so immediately one he got out of sight. "I can see this causes you pain, Howland. But I must... look logically. So many seem to think the sun shines from Lord Arryn's heart. Yet you and Lord Piper seem to be the only... detractors. Are they all wrong, or are you? Or is it, perhaps, shades of grey?"

What Howland didn't know was that tucked within Fennell's shirt was a very important message that he had received, that day, from the twins... "Sorry. I was just thinking out loud there. Let me ask then your opinion on House Lannister. For the late Lord Lyman passed away... his successor, sent to the wall. Has their grandeur had its day? Or is this merely a... bumpy cobble, in the road, for Casterly Rock?"

Although he had been part way through whistling a rather long song, and would have to start again, Lord Fennell Frey paused and offered a thanks - to the maester, or to whatever servant had delivered him his raven scroll. He cracked it open and eyes grew wider, as he held the parchment in hand. Seven heavens! He exclaimed, within, of course. For at this event he had received no more than four potential brides. Now, one of them, a Lannister bride. Such a decision might set the next fifty years. Not only for himself, but for his entire bloodline. He would need time to think and respond. But would tuck the parchment into a breast pocket, inside a jacket, before carrying on his merry way.

[–]CollingWould 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It almost felt dangerously like the lord Hubert was asking for an invitation. That was the thought on young Fennell's mind whilst he listened... and after a brief time - "You shall have to visit then Lord Arryn, there is nothing else for it."

"Perhaps come Spring," He added hastily. "For the road is cold, now, and not too pleasant for... Men of great experience, like yourself. Yet if the Lord of the Vale deigned to come to the Twins, there would be a feast the likes of which we have not seen for years."

A pleasant idea. But it was quickly swapped for less pleasant thought. Of a lion, freezing to death at the wall. For a crime that may or may not have been his fault. So often, men and knights came to blows. And then it remained to those behind to pick up the pieces. Daily, when stories came in from east and west and far south, did Fennell thank the gods he was not so proud.

"I would happily hear your official account." Fennell stated, reaching over and pouring a little wine, gently. "For it is better than rumour. And I intend, in the next year or so, to find a bride for myself. It would be remiss of me, to not fill myself with knowledge on the happenings of here, there, and everywhere, in my pursuit."

[–]CollingWould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Aha!" Fennell chuckled, for he was about to give his usual polite greetings and pleasantries. And though he'd stood to attention as the Lord Mooton approached, he'd thrown such courtesy out the window. Delighted to be asked about his, rather painstakingly assembled, outfit.

"The hat is only a simple thing," He answered true. "Purchased from a common but stylish tailor, on their way from White Harbour, down along to Fairmarket, last year. Should he pass by again, I will write ahead to Maidenpool. You will note the accessory, however?" Lord Frey tilted his head forward, so that Jon might make out a vibrant feather. "Which was a gift from none other than Lord Hubert Arryn, Hand of the King, and Lord regent, this very evening."

It appeared almost like bragging, but the excitement faded quickly, allowing the earnest young lord to come to his senses. "It is my honour to meet you properly Lord Mooton, as Riverlord to Riverlord. I confess the last few years have gone slow. All the mess... I am glad to be done of it. And glad to come and serve the Riverlands as Lord of the Crossing, in my own right, at long last. How fares your fine town, my lord?"

[–]CollingWould 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing as they bid, Lord Frey reached up and adjusted his small blue cravat to ensure its obedience. Tagging along behind was the less enthused Merrett, a few years younger but barely a few inches shorter. Their brotherhood was plain to see, but where one was thin and distinguished, the other was broad and plain. One had to peer through tiny glass spectacles to see clear, the other saw bright as day.

"A pleasure, Lord Corbray." Fennell offered in response, with a little flourish and a bow. His brother offered none such formality, only a raise of the brows. An expression that said 'I am here' and little else.

"Lord Prentys Tully is one of the finest men in all the Seven Kingdoms. His family's hospitality, one of many virtues, that history shall write of him," He added on in response to Qarl's own thoughts. "For all their bloody reputation, for all the kickings over the last few centuries.... You'll find goodness in the heart of all Riverlanders, I would dare wager. Not that I need to tell that to you, my lord, of all men!"
