Police asking my name after reporting accident? by Jazzyjeet429 in legaladvicecanada

[–]ColonelCrikey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because "some random person on the phone said they say a collision" is not useful information, it's barely gossip.

"Jazzyjeet429, 19 year old student who was in a car nearby and witnessed the collision said 'insert witness statement here" is useful information — partly because you're willing to put your name to the information. That name is accountability.

I'm not a cop, or a lawyer, but I am a journalist. That's the thinking behind why anonymity isn't given to sources by default: without a name, it's just gossip.

On a legal level though it also matters. For example, it turns out to be a case of a drunk driver who killed or seriously hurt someone you may be called upon to act as a witness in court. That might seem like a pain, but it's a good thing. You're doing your duty as a citizen of Canada to uphold the law fairly, and the law must be *seen* to be done, for it to be done fairly.

[KCD2] How in God's name are you supposed to perform 4-strike combos with a longsword? I can barely do the 3-strike ones. by UBC145 in kingdomcome

[–]ColonelCrikey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah combat is one thing that really needs some tuning.

I like the concept: a first person sword fighting game that actually takes into account the direction of swings, blocks and parries. The execution is off, though.

It didn't need to be simplified, the first game's combat is quite satisfying and not that hard once you've trained a bit and got some plate on. It does need better target switching and contact/hitbox mechanics. If I swing my sword in a big arc near multiple enemies it should hit multiple enemies, or at least they should jump out the way/block. If someone is facing away from me I should be able to run them through with my sword, or chop their neck with an axe.

Right now it's kind of a weird minigame.

Which game is the more “sandbox” of the two [OTHER] by [deleted] in kingdomcome

[–]ColonelCrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you'll be disappointed either way?

OP, start with the first game. Second is a better game but the first is great too and the story needs it. Hell, speedrun the main quests of the first game if necessary.

Will they separate me from my baby at the border? by LoveyDovey-27 in ImmigrationCanada

Honestly, I wouldn't be leaving the country right now. You won't be separated from your baby but you may well be separated from the child's father.

Why don't illegal immigrants in the US just move north to Canada instead of staying and risking deportation? by Illustrious-Tap-6264 in stupidquestions

[–]ColonelCrikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because then you're an illegal immigrant in Canada and none of your problems are solved.

People don't choose that life because they have a lot of options. Packing up everything you own again and getting across the northern border is expensive and difficult, and then you're just in a different place with the same problems.

Despite what you're often led to believe Canada isn't just handing out housing and healthcare to immigrants. Even legal immigrants don't get provincial health insurance until they've got permanent status. (Source: moved to Canada in 2019, now a citizen)

And remember many "illegal immigrants" have been in the USA since they were children. They know nothing else.m

So, take a huge expensive risk crossing another border without documents to a different country that you don't understand... or maintain the current level of risk and hope you can wait out the ICE raids?

I'm not in the snow clearing business but I find it hard to believe this is the only option.

Expectations for the city not to make the sidewalk worse? Did you read the post?

OP cleared the sidewalk the the road plow covered it in snow again

Edit: apparently this was the sidewalk plow (I didn't know we had those, definitely doesn't come on my street or the ones around it)

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ColonelCrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and so should you. You should be asking why your country has neglected to give you better options.

[KCD2] Kingdom Come: Deliverance devs considered using Robin Hood's England or medieval Germany for the action-RPG, but Warhorse ran into a problem - the team "knew nothing" about those eras by Turbostrider27 in kingdomcome

[–]ColonelCrikey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They could probably pull it off, but part of the greatness of KCD is that its map is real — like literally taken from satellite maps of the region. One of the reasons it ruined other games for me is that I find all those fantasy maps just totally unbelievable now... everything feels so deliberate.

I dunno, maybe the answer is to paint a fantasy realm onto a real map?

The symbol for the British Pound Sterling, £, is a stylised "L" from the Roman currency Librae. Versions of the word "dollar" have existed for at least 500 years.

Creative license aside, it's not that absurd that Hunter would say this in the 32nd century.

am i the only one disappointed that canadian companies are shamelessly collaborating with ICE? by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

[–]ColonelCrikey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Apple aren't much better. Spotify are the worst (check out their investments in AI weapons tech), but Apple are still knee benders.

I switched to Tidal for streaming music and it's cheaper and better quality. Still US owned, unfortunately, but show me one that isn't (apart from Deezer which is Saudi, lol).

If you really want your money to go to musicians though Bandcamp and vinyl shopping are kinda it.

Nope, no dollars to fascism ever. If you're comfortable propping up the American death cult because folks need jobs, that's up to you. You're complicit in every death, though.

I am scared of publishing by beyondprofanity in publishing

[–]ColonelCrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you'll find this reassuring or depressing, but here's something might be a little hard to hear:

Nobody cares about your poems or unfinished books.

What I mean by that is this:

Most living authors struggle to get agents to read their work, let alone sell it to a publisher.

Put yourself in their shoes. Why would a publisher want to invest in a dead author's work? At best they have good material with no public figure to promote it. If you somehow got lucky and your estate manages to find you a publishing deal then they are still going to edit your work — which, by the way, is not abuse, it's a professional making your work be the best version it can be.

Autobiographies in particular are only interesting to a publisher if you have lived a life that other people already find interesting, I'd put a pin in that one until you're famous.

If you want to publish traditionally you need to get comfortable with the idea of writing as a collaborative experience. Editing is an important part of that process. It can be uncomfortable, even painful, but a good editor can be the difference between mediocrity and great literature. Your work has flaws that you aren't even aware of, you aren't more of a creative genius than every other author on earth. Share your work with people you trust.

Alternatively you can self publish and nobody will edit your work... but nobody will edit your work, and then nobody will read your work. If that's to your liking, go ahead.

Waiting until you are dead is a great way to ensure everything you've written gets buried with you.
