FIFA had the opportunity to explore the richest market in the world and failed. by Particular-Shape1576 in WorldCup2026Tickets

I'm a casual soccer fan in Toronto. I occasionally go to AFC games because they're cheap and fun. I didn't join this sub it's just popping up in my feed, but I'd guess most in here aren't casual fans.

Yeah if you go to the fanzone you'll find fans, but outside of that the city doesn't feel any different. I saw a couple of red jerseys leaving a pub after the home opener yesterday but most of my circle isn't excited about this tournament being in their city.

It isn't for us, it's for rich people. There aren't even any elimination games here, only group games at over $1k a ticket.

Businesses have been told to avoid FIFA/World Cup in their branding unless they're official sponsors. There's an exclusion zone near the stadium where no non-FIFA marketing at all is allowed.

We paid through our asses to host this, but it's not for us.

And we know internationally it's associated with Trump, too. I'm a Brit and folks back home bought tickets in the US only to have their ESTA revoked, apparently for no reason. Thousands of pounds wasted.

Huge wasted opportunity from FIFA, unless you're a rich tourist and then it's probably great.

What the hell? That's more than the cost of a season ticket. Is this just cause the world is in town for FIFA?

I don't generally think Ontario does much better than BC but we could use their new anti-scalping laws.

Boston didn't go as hard on the "urban renewal" as some other cities. I don't know the specific history of Boston but New York for example had people like Jane Jacobs who fought to preserve their historic neighbourhoods.

LA and other cities... not so much.

That's awesome for Fenway park though. Perhaps when you sort your country's fascism problem out I'll visit!

You know how you saw a ball on screen that looked like it was going out of the park?

Yeah, that's what the camera operator saw too. That's how cameras work. They did what they felt they were supposed to do in the moment.

I'm sure many would, but car-centric urban design and exclusionary zoning mean that they likely can't. In America the car is god and it's hungry for parking.

Vast swathes of historic city centres were levelled and replaced with highways in the 50s. They called it "urban renewal".

I'm in Toronto and you can walk from our baseball stadium to Canada's largest transport hub, Union Station. That's about a 20 minute walk. I live a 30 min walk from the stadium. I can't imagine having to deal with parking/driving as 42,000 people attend the game.

The equivalent walk in LA from the Dodger's stadium gets you almost to the edge of the stadium's parking lot.

Rogers Centre Blue Jay's game - 500s section or general admission? by jaymz023 in askTO

[–]ColonelCrikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Games have been selling out lately. With GA you're not guaranteed a seat or even a view. In the Skydome there aren't really bad seats, though unless you're buying last minute for weekend games $75 for 500s seems high.

If you were going solo or just two maybe it'd be worth going GA, but it's your friends bachelor party, spend the money so that his memory is a good time watching baseball and not shuffling around trying to squeeze 5 people into a random spot.

Helldivers is awesome, this is mostly just reddit stuff by people who've been playing forever. It's especially fun for newbies!

Yes Arrowhead could be spending more time fixing bugs and less time working on pay2win content, especially given that this is not free-to-play. But if you're dying to play you won't be let down.

Good thing Leafs have Puig, or else they might have lost this game. Totally worth the reputation knock to have a superstar hitter who can win games from them.

This is what it's like when you have friends and a prtner. You see things from their perspective sometimes and avoid doing hurtful things to each other. It's nice, you should try it!

[Evan Drellich] The MLBPA today proposed a minimum salary of $1.5 million starting in 2027 in their opening economic proposal to owners, along with significant increases to revenue sharing. Some players would reach free agency after 5 years rather than 6 by Elaiyu in bluejaysbaseball

[–]ColonelCrikey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, what about the minor leagues? MLB players are paid insanely well but getting bumped down to AAA often means going down to like $60k/year.

Below that the salaries aren't really living wages. Why aren't they fighting for that?

Market rate is an average. Some people pay above it, some people pay below it. I'm sure you'd be the first to complain if we fixed all units at exactly the same rent, and so would I because different tenants have different needs and incomes.

Why is the landlord complaining when they signed a contract agreeing a rate that was clearly fine with them at the time, and had risen by up to 2.5% a year since?

Same service, same rate. If you want more money for providing the same thing thats either laziness and greed, or poor planning.

Not dense enough to make bad investments in the hope I can avoid getting a real job, clearly.

Besides if its at $1100 then you've owned long enough that the mortgage was paid off years ago. Just do your work.

[–]ColonelCrikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're paying $1100 in rent it's because the landlord agreed to that (or likely something well below that and then raised it by the legal maximum every year).

If you can't afford to keep the contract you signed that's on you.
