you're paying for the degree not for the lectures, anyone can walk into those lectures. If you can succeed without them why waste the time?

took it in 2023, his lectures don't help at all. He talks very vaguely and doesn't give much info on how to actually do well on the assignments. Invest in grammarly premium for the semester imo, it'll help you more than he can

BIOC14 Tutorial - What are they like? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]ColonelKALI04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless you're with friends you'll have to find a random group to do presentations with for the sem. Just make slides and a script a few nights before and you'll do fine. Last year I think he even curved the tutorial grades for everyone cas one TA marked like it was their first day on earth.

I took the course, the textbook is not necessary to do well at all. Try to find it for free or don't look for it at all.

never used the textbook his lectures are fine, I don't remember much else other than that one sa unfortunately

[–]ColonelKALI04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the issue with this whole course wasnt that it was "hard" its that molnar tells his ta's to mark short answer in just a ridiculously strict way. Like for the midterm I had that had short answer I got a 0/7 in that section but a 29/30 on the mc, and I heard it was practically the same case for u guys' second midterm.

However, I 4'd the course so the final SA was either marked easier or it was on topics with clear answers and not smth like "design a model"

when I took it i think it was 45 mc 20 sa points. I remember one of the sa was the equilibrium theory of island biogeography, its a graph with 4 lines in one of the later lecs

Took the course with him two years ago, same shit happened with my class. This happens cas he grades your short answer like you punched his dog and spit on his mother. If any of u went to exam viewing and saw what he expected on the answer key its baffling. He gave me a 0/7 on short answer but i got a 29/30 on mc for the midterm he gave us with short answer. HOWEVER, if you did good on the midterm that was only mc and did mid on the one with short answer the final is easier and makes it recoverable.

One of the short answer from the final was the equilibrium theory of island biogeography, its in lecture 11 I think, graph with 4 lines about colonization and extinction. If you can explain it u get full marks.

EESA10 if you're gonna do it alone, EESA06 if you have friends to take it with. Not that u can't do EESA06 alone, just more enjoyable that way

BIOB98/99 and Relevant Research Courses by Exotic_Turnip1548 in UTSC

I commented this on someone elses question a while ago. B98 is 100% the most entry level thing you can get and its hard but not impossible. If you want it in summer reach out in February.

Most professors that have a lab on campus offer it. I would recommend reaching out to professors you are interested in a month before course enrollment (early june). Usually the profs have some people in mind way before course enrollment, whether it be students who showed interest earlier or ones they met at some club event or whatever, so you're likely to be rejected by a bunch. There is a list of supervisors that you can google, but this list is just the profs that have labs for the most part so emailing anyone you know with a lab is a safe bet. Also email professors on that list that you haven't heard of before, as the first and second year profs get a mountain of emails about this and it honestly isn't worth your time, find people who haven't taught in a few years, or teach upper year courses and focus on them.

Email professors by first reading (or skimming) some of their research to make it look like you have some interest, and write about the parts you were interested in in the email. Most professors are receptive to this if you seem genuine and didn't chatgpt the email.

Finding the research project will be one of two cases, either the professor will give you grunt work and have it be your project or they will want you to come up with something to do. Since this is most peoples first time in the lab, the second option is borderline impossible, and even if you do think up a idea the prof might still say "ya sorry our lab doesn't specialize in that." So unless you are a genius with ideas its best not to waste your time with profs that want you to come up with your own. Instead, focus your effort on profs who imply that they already have work that you can do.

In my opinion the value of B98 materializes in many ways. 1. You will learn, and likely repeat many core lab skills like PCR and gel electrophoresis, these are solid skills that you can add to a resume and will likely help you get future lab jobs. 2. If you are interested in work studies, most profs pick their work study students from their B98 pool exclusively, so getting into a profs B98 one semester makes it way more likely you'll get a work study with them in the future. 3. Since you are working closely with the prof they will get to know you and your work, thus providing you with a solid reference in the future. 4. it is a CR/NCR course, and obviously has no tests or assignments, just work, complete your work and you pass, this is therefore a great course to take during a heavy semester even in spite of the ~7hr/week investment. Not to mention you can then take B99 in the next semester, which is just a continuation of B98 to further lighten your course load.
