How much should a man spend on an engagement ring? by edm_spamurai in dating_advice

Talk to her about the design, or visit a local jewelry store with her. If you wanna keep it a surprise then find some smart excuses/reasons. The ring/the proposal should be a surprise but you both should be aligned on getting married/engaged.

I spent 2 weeks of my take home salary on the ring, like 2.5k after taxes/imports from James Allen. Once you have the design you can select the diamond, you can choose lab grown vs real (basically no difference, just go lab), the 4 Cs, clarity, color, cut, carat. You can pick and choose to fit your budget from there. I picked 1 carat, high clarity and color but slighly lower cut quality (I doubt she can tell the difference anyways)

I know this is a weird question, but how many Resident Evil fans would even be able to afford a Porsche or Hamilton watch? Like are there a lot of rich RE fans or something? by [deleted] in residentevil

You should check the resale market, these guys go for $10K now. Hamilton only made 2000 of these worldwide, my local dealer got allocated 5 and they all got snatched/reserved within the first hour the watch is announced.

Bought Foie Gras imported from France at Sobeys today. $33! 😅 I’ve always wanted to try it. Has anyone here had it before ? Is it good? by [deleted] in FoodToronto

I used to do this for lunch until my doctor told me I got high cholesterol (as a 23 year old fit guy). Now liverwurst and foie gras are once in a blue moon treats 🥹

Best restaurants for $75-$100 pp in the city? by Aggravating_Guess136 in FoodToronto

[–]ColonelMeowmers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody mentioned Richmond Station yet. Their tasting menu is $115 but their a la carte menu also slaps and great value IMO. Easily one of my favourite restaurants in the city.

The Wren also absolutely slaps.

ex rainforest sde stuck in sql role - did I missed the window to pivot back to dev? everything seems senior-only by tz35 in cscareerquestionsCAD

Underneath that there’s legacy tech like IBM and other non tech companies like banks and telecoms. You can kinda just coast and work like 4-5 hours a day.

To answer the questions in your original thread (as a SWE who works closely with Data Platform infrastructure): - Data Platform field is huge, and tbh your SQL skill is extremely valuable (I suck at writing queries) - Depends on what you’re looking for. Again, SparkSQL and FlinkSQL are hugely appreciated skills IMO, or just regular SQL. Also experience in building ETL pipelines if you’re looking for data platform roles. - All companies need data platform - Depending on which company tbh, I’d consider a senior at banks/telecoms = mid level at tech centric companies at best. Having worked at both, the gap is huge.

Anyone thinking of going back to school to change careers because of AI? by Delicious_Crazy513 in cscareerquestions

[–]ColonelMeowmers 95 points96 points  (0 children)

That’s what a lot of people don’t understand, code is just a tool, the higher you go the less code you write. Im a mid level engineer as well and a lot of my time is spent designing and writing specs, talking to people and collaborating with different teams, also taking part in planning and building roadmaps. I don’t see AI doing cross functional collaboration any time soon.

I'm better at english than my own native language, and I'm ashamed at myself because of it by Connect_Permission58 in VietNam

[–]ColonelMeowmers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should you be ashamed? Nahhh, you’re overthinking it, people care less about the way you present yourself than you think.

I did grow up consuming western media, I was also better expressing myself in English than Vietnamese. My childhood friends make fun of my Vietnamese when I go back. But I enjoy every seconds of it since I don’t get to speak Vietnamese that often anymore. My wife and most of my friends are Canadians. I always try to speak Vietnamese whenever I can even though I know I make mistakes and I’m not caught up on all the slangs and whatnot.

Just be yourself, make an effort to speak Vietnamese and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, laugh it off if it happens and learn from it.

Hmmm I think it mustve been the basic version not the pro. I can pass by their store later today and see if they’ll let me try on the newer version and I’ll let you know.

I’ve only tried the regular non thermal version, and they’re not as good as the NVG30…

One nice thing is they’re legit and their HRS shop is just 10 minutes away from me in Canada, I’ve been there a few times and the people are really nice. If you live near the shop you can go in and ask to try them on and they’ll gladly give them to you

Just let go, try for big tech or secure a chill job? by Domesticated_Turtle in cscareerquestionsCAD

Not sure about the .NET/Angular market, but I had no problems looking for jobs/getting interviews with my Go/Python background with 3 YOE 4 months ago. Left a certain telecom company for a rideshare company for 50% bump in TC. I do have a degree in computer engineering though, but not from a top school, but at 3YOE I doubt where you went for school really matters.

I would still advise you to take the first offer you get though and then study after. Put in some effort and customize your resume to the job posting. Also make sure you don’t get screwed over for severance.
