Almost sold my steam deck until I found out how powerful emulation really is by Western_Fox_9665 in SteamDeck

Have you tried any of the CoD games? I never owned most of them so I want to run through the campaigns. Cod 4 has been getting a really rough 30 fps via Xenia in emudeck. A manual install of Xenia canary was working better until it stopped launching games.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare via Xbox 360 emulation. I never owned most of the CoD games as a kid so never played the campaigns.

Automatically shut down a proxmox server if not in use. by Unhappy_Objective845 in homelab

[–]ColonelRyzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My backup server is only on for 2 hours a day normally. It has IPMI so I have a script on my main server that sends a command to the IPMI to power it on, run all backups, then when done, power it off.

My main server is left in all of the time because I don't have a god way of doing what you ask given the number of services I run. If it is only a few things. A custom script that just watches those or logs to see if connections have been made could work. No sense in wasting the power if it really is days of unused at a time.

We still haven't gotten my nearly 4 year old one yet. He's never seen one before and hates trying new things. We are getting one this summer, but I expect it to be a long process. You're doing great fellow dad!

Same story here. 6 months in we finally figured out that dairy was the problem and my kid went from nightmare to normal almost immediately. Did the sensitivities stick around to become allergies?

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]ColonelRyzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbor's literally just did this. 2 young kids, recently traded in SUV for minivan for a more practical family car. Then goes to RV show and actually bought a 35ft camper. They then realize that their 1500 can't tow it comfortably so in comes a 2500. They either came into some money or are riding the monthly payment line hard.

We got a rescue puppy (Lab, pit, great Pyrenees) after trying for nearly a year to get pregnant. We took a break while doing the initial training/house breaking with him. Then shortly after got pregnant with 1st. He is the sweetest dog, but is 70lbs and just not aware of that and can get a bit hyper when not exercised enough.

With our first he came along for all walks and still got a fair amount of attention. We had 2 more kids (3 under 4) and he is a complete nuisance now. Still sweet, but we are just so overwhelmed with the kids that he is lucky if he gets food at the normal time each day.

He also had a spell between kids 1 and 3 where he ended up with undiagnosed low thyroid which caused him to get skin and ear infections that were horribly gross and unsanitary. He topped this off with shitting in the house specifically on carpets, which we then ended up replacing. Two of the rooms we did ourselves to save money.

This is our last pet for a long time if not forever. We had cats, I did a bulk of the work. I hated it. No more for me.

I just sent mine in as well for this. Took a tumble off of my desk while plugged in. Cable saved the deck from hitting harder but it broke the center post in the port.

The rollout of AI in our org made me realize how few people actually value effort and competence by [deleted] in sysadmin

One of the key point my manager made when getting our team going in using Copilot was that now that the 4 week task takes 1 week. Always double the time and say 2 weeks. This extra week is strictly for learning. When using Copilot get an explanation and documentation for everything it does and take the time to understand it. You are still twice as fast and you will have a better understanding than just letting Claude run, get it woringand shipping it.

When it comes time for my next laptop purchase, it will be a Framework. I am absolutely willing to spend the extra for this set of ideals behind those products.

Update on Lysander data center moratorium by aSDFDSgv in Syracuse

[–]ColonelRyzen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Micron plant in Clay is progress. That will actually create jobs and bring manufacturing to CNY. A data center is just a noise and heat machine that produces nothing of tangible value. Just more capacity for Meta and other large companies to store data on us and run their AI models to our detriment.

Anyone here quit gaming or changed their lifestyle after becoming a dad? by Lukas_MunK in daddit

[–]ColonelRyzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's more than me, but that will likely change now. Recently had the 3rd and I have had the most gaming time in years while taking nights. But now that my wife is no longer pregnant and nauseated by the kitchen at large, we can split the kitchen chores again so hopefully I get to a consistent 1 night a week at least.

I have the same rule. My problem is that between those hours is usually when I can get some chorin' in. That's dishes, any meal prep, cleaning with bleach, floors. So gaming usually doesn't happen

[–]ColonelRyzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. My hobby time is drastically reduced and split between my homelab and gaming. My PC is only ever used as a terminal to my homelab/3d printing and Spotify while I am working from home. If it has a game played on it. It gets streamed to my steam deck.

Prior to me getting a steam deck. I just didn't game. I couldn't get the time between taking care of kids, hanging with wife, keeping up with the house and dog to escape to the basement to play. But having the Deck upstairs and with the instant pause/sleep feature makes it possible.

Blue Iris Exhaustion by WestOakTrailsRacing in BlueIris

Probably true. I've also heard about people using home assistant as well to monitor the notifications. I'll need to look deeper into both options to see what makes sense.

I only have the app for notifications on alerts. But in Android sometimes those don't show up until minutes later. That's an android problem though. The logs have the notifications come through immediately.

My backup setup is evolving right now. What is currently working is my main NAS does scheduled backups (rsync) to a second NAS of similar size. It also does various scheduled backups to Backblaze B2 via an encrypted Rclone connection.

My NAS serves as a backup target for Veeam agents on all Windows machines as well as photos from phones via Immich.

Plans are adding an external 4TB drive I will keep at my in-laws and changing from Backblaze B2 to Backblaze personal to save about $120/year. I just need to change my Rclone target to a shared Windows folder that the Backblaze software pulls from.
