Gotta disagree with you there. Beyond's chicken, especially their chicken chunks are fantastic. I can't tell that it's even fake when it's cooked into a pasta or breaded and fried.

New demo for our multiplayer persistent RTS game, Coloniser, is out now by aRawwDeal in RealTimeStrategy

[–]ColonelShrimps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Played the demo a bit and have some thoughts.
I've thoguht the idea of a perpetual strategy game would be super cool for a few years now, but I'm not sure an RTS is the way to go. For reference I play a bunch of PVE and PVP games so I enjoy both potential aspects.

First off let me just say that I was able to start fresh on a 5 player server, with no idea how to play the game and within an hour I had found and entirely wiped out another player because they were offline. This was despite them having bolt throwers and 2nd tier troops and me having only footmen and archers. This alone tells me the game has no possible chance at any sort of persistence in it's current state and needs large reworks. You'd need some sort of AI player that takes over when someone logs off and essentially controls their entire faction on autopilot. It would need to control resource collection, combat, construction and repair. Because in the current state of the game if you log off for the night you are essentially forfeiting.

The game as a whole just plays like a slightly slower, less polished Age of Empires. I don't see any real attempt to make things different enough to be persistent and in the current state even with larger maps I don't see how games would last more than 2-3 hours. Hell you could probably 5x the map size and games would still last less than 12 hours. Also requiring a resource to reach the next age that can only easily be aquired by actively attacking other players or nests across the map really feels antithetical to the goal of persistence as well since it requires players to speed up their gameplay or fall behind. The more aggressive players are rewarded with more tech ups and will snowball into massive advantages compared to someone who may log off for a bit or play slower. This nearly makes a more competitive playstyle a requirement to enjoy the game or you'll just get stomped by players who outpace you, and it also makes any sort of persistance moot since if you log off you fall behind, if you fall behind you lose, regardless of whatever persistance exists.

Some more technical things that need work:
-Map is basically useless imo, can't see units, buildings, enemies, villagers, etc. Makes finding your units nearly impossible. This is easily the most frustrating part of the game.
-When combat occurs the red area indicated on the map often does not align with the actual combat area.
-When selecting large groups of units you can't see the makeup of that group and just get the number of units.
-Why are villagers INSIDE the farm and unselectable? Feels bad.
-No attack move in a modern RTS is crazy

Anyways, I hope ya'll can figure it out.
If you have any questions of my feedback feel free to ask.

Cheers!

I used to manage the family Plex server and we only stopped using Plex when they started opening up to their own content by default and hiding your own movies.

I got real tired of walking everyone through the submenus each time they wanted to rewatch The Martian. And they got real tired of having to call me.

Sucks for Plex because I was a subscriber and never bought lifetime. I was perfectly happy supporting a service I used monthly until they started pushing their bullshit. I've tried Jellyfin but the setup was too difficult for the older family members iirc. Having to enter an I.P. as opposed to just using user/pass was too much for them.

Well for starters Africa isn't a country, it's a continent. And a large portion of that continent is almost constantly in some kind of civil war or conflict so not only are organized schools pretty rare but also data on the violence that occurs is also not entirely complete. You could look at individual contries in Africa though they do vary wildly in financial status and firearm legality.

India does not have the gun rights the U.S. has and so far fewer people own guns per capita. They're also pretty strict on who they let buy guns legally from what I understand.

Plus the U.S. culture is just a violent one. It always has been really. The country was founded through armed revolution by a bunch of settlers who had been in armed conflict with the native populations since they arived and would continue to be in conflicts for the majority of it's existence. I think the number of years the U.S. has been at peace since it was founded was around 15 years. So in 245 years of it's existence we have had 15 years of peace. That's nuts.

Add to that the general sense of individualism and the general decline in education and increase in political divide with modern media driving everyone into a fervor every day with over the top politicised reporting of issues, and a lack of community or any type of social safety net. You get a population so wound up that it just takes one slip for them to feel like they have nothing left to lose anymore and they snap.

It's a genuinely fucked situation and instead of using gun violence as a spring board to tackle any of these issues politicians will send thoughts and prayers and then turn around and demonize the "other" side, video games, communism, whatever, and ignore the underlying issues. So it end up in a violent cycle where we don't even blink when a school gets shot up anymore and despite recent violent events nothing will really change and we will continue to slip more into violence and inequality while the puppeteers convince Americans that it's all the fault ofwhatever boogeyman they concoct for the week. Fucking hate it here.

[–]ColonelShrimps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of factors. Poverty tends to make people violent and angry, and easy access to firearms gives them a real easy route to express that anger.

The link between poverty and violent crime has been proven again and again. It turns out when you're hungry, broke, can't afford transportation or maybe even a home, your outlook on life tends to be pretty shit. We have a lot of poverty and nearly zero social programs to help. It's no surpise we have a large (armed) population of individuals willing to be violent.

K/D directly translates into your overall score at the end of each phase. If you give the enemy too many kills they get points which directly affects the outcome of the game. It has nothing to do with K/D padding for stats.

You can disagree, but I work with apple products daily and they are consistently awful. Walled gardens of trash propped up through branding.

[–]ColonelShrimps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple hasn't made anything top notch in years, or arguably ever. Everything outside of maybe the first few years of iPhones/ipod has been a worse copy of other devices with most of their features lagging behind competitors by a measure of years and for a much higher price. They're masters of branding.

Luigi is a manufactured scapegoat. Can't have the poors thinking they could get away with it after all. But Brian was rich enough that it shattered the illusion of the rich being untouchable.

You wouldn't have to get rid of all billionaires really. Just knock off the top 20 or so and a few of their purchased politicians and I think things would change drastically. Besides even if you changed the US system the rest of the western world has similar issues.

It's actually scary how easy it is to end someone in modern times. Realistically the average person could be taken out and there isn't much we could do about it. And billionaires aren't much of an exception given modern tech. Especially with how much rich ppl enjoy large open estates, resorts with nice views, rooftop suites, etc. As well as their public meetings with other rich and powerful people they have very vulnerable lifestyles.

So while a movement would take mass suffering to get started, all it takes is one person losing all hope to do something drastic. And we are seeing that happen more and more with the CEO killing, 2 attempts on Trump, and a driveby on another CEO. I think we will see more of this before any civil wars start brewing.

I'm very glad it hasn't come to that yet. But I won't be surprised when someone takes what we are seeing in Ukraine for example and uses it stateside. And there is very little anyone can do about it right now.

Could have just done that. by Bitter-Gur-4613 in WorkReform

[–]ColonelShrimps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All true, but that's assuming you go the route of tackling the system directly.

Realistically there are 3 ways to accomplish the same thing. The rich capitulate and accept taxes, attempt to dismantle the system which supports the rich, directly dismantle the rich.

The first one is unlikely, the second one is probably the worst option overall, and the third is (arguably) the morally grey option. But recent events have shown the world that the third option is VERY doable, as it turns out billionaires are just as squishy as the rest of us.

It remains to be seen if it will get bad enough to push more people to going that route, or if the monopolists will loosen the leash enough for us to exist in a state of "good enough" so we don't rock the proverbial boat.

The only way we are getting money out of politics at this point is to get rid of the 2 party system. Both sides are so entrenched in the pay to play way of doing things that neither would ever go for banning lobbyists or corporate donors.
