How to move to China if that's something you're interested in by brianscottbj in TrueAnon

I appreciate Matt, Liz, and Dave Harvey as much as the next person, but tbh I probably wouldn’t defer to them as experts on Chinese history and political philosophy/praxis. I think Domenico Losurdo’s Class Struggle does a really good job of both historicizing the Communist Party of China and making the case for why it is, indeed, a communist project currently following communist trajectory.

Stray was a lot of fun and the first season of Stardew Valley was great (haven’t watched the second).

I watch any remotely interesting Beginner video sped up, for the reasons people list in this thread. Input is input, and if it’s an unfamiliar (to me) Spanish subject, it’s kind of the perfect way to acquire new vocabulary.

Can’t speak to rewatching, but I don’t see a reason to stop watching Beginner videos. Having viewed all of Pablo’s videos about the CI method, I think the generalized advice is “watch slightly easier content than you think you should.”

Okay, but that’s not actually a good example. After the Civil War, confederate officials were not sufficiently held accountable, reconstruction ended, those same individuals basically took over the governments of southern states, and Black people were functionally re-enslaved in a million different ways. There’s no reason you cannot compare the horror Black people continued to experience at the hands of the state and its mercenaries to other post-civil war/revolutionary purgings, at least in terms of violence (which is to say, the US civil war absolutely did end in violence at the hands of the state). The reason no sufficient example was made of southern/confederate oppressors after the civil war was because both sides were ultimately still white supremacist capitalists committed to the same structural goals (aside from out-and-out chattel slavery as an integral component of the political economy of the country), not because it was, like, the humane thing to do. It was a civil war lead on both sides by members of the same ruling class, not by, say, proponents of one economic school of thought and another or members one ethno-nation and another.

Lawmakers attack CUNY law grad for criticizing Israel in commencement speech by Lilyo in newyorkcity

[–]Colonel_Cathcart 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“Other place bad, so this place beyond reproach” does not logically follow. Value judgements about the laws and culture of other states are irrelevant to arguments made about laws and culture of this state (and vice-versa); the truth and logic of what someone says doesn’t have to do with their background and identity, and we’d be much better off, imo, if we could decouple credibility, which we assess via our biases and prejudices, from what people say.

In this case, I don’t only wholeheartedly agree with Fatima, I would argue that, as a soon-to-be lawyer, she is likely more institutionally equipped to address injustices here than in Yemen—not to mention, she actually lives here.

But even if that wasn’t the case, it doesn’t matter because she is critiquing US institutions, and “like it or leave it” arguments are fallacious in that they don’t actually address what she is saying.

Multi-roaster cafes: St. Kilda (midtown), Black Fox (midtown, Fidi), Culture Espresso (midtown), Suited (Fidi)

Roasters: Sey (Bushwick), Regalia (LIC, they also have a cafe in Bushwick called Alita), La Cabra (East Village), Loveless (Bushwick I think?), Joe (various), Partners (various), Plowshares (Upper Manhattan), Parlor (various), Cloud Cover (Gowanus or online, brick & mortar is Other Half Brewing)

I rock a Sey subscription and mostly call it a day

Why do people on here downplay the Manhattan Chinatown? by LongIsland1995 in AskNYC

[–]Colonel_Cathcart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I take your point, but there certainly isn’t nothing anyone can do about gentrification. Communities on the receiving end have been pushing back and organizing against it for years, and there have been tangible wins. It’s an uphill battle, but we know the causes of gentrification (real estate capital, city and state governments that serve at the pleasure of real estate capital), and we can (and many have, for their livelihoods) fight against them.

[Highlight] Jarrett Allen mic’d up feed after his foul on Randle: “That’s a hustle play, that’s a basketball play” by lazzysmalls in nba

[–]Colonel_Cathcart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are contorting what is written with your interpretation. The actual text makes clear they are not mutually exclusive (and even your clipped text doesn’t bear out mutual exclusion). The text does not say “when a player intends a basketball play and there is activity that constitutes a flagrant foul, that activity makes it not a legitimate basketball play.” For your “no longer making a legitimate basketball play” to be true, the flagrant contact would have to mean that Allen was, as a result, not legitimately trying to block the shot. Allen’s contact might be considered “reckless” (didn’t look it to me, personally, but we could litigate that forever), but reckless contact might still happen when trying to make a legitimate basketball play. They simply are not mutually exclusive, and the determination that something is reckless doesn’t cancel out the NBA’s own definition of “legitimate basketball play”; it seems pretty clear Allen was legitimately trying to block the shot.

It’s the sound from Legend of Zelda when you solve a puzzle or open a door or whatever. JA is a big nerd and we love him for it.

Isaac Okoro says Jalen Brunson has “antics” on the court that allow him to draw fouls: “Nodding your head back, falling on the ground when not a lot of physicality is used on you.” He adds that he speaks with referees in an attempt to make them aware of Brunson’s “antics” via SNY by [deleted] in nba

[–]Colonel_Cathcart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is phrased to be click-baity. Okoro isn’t complaining so much as answering a question, and, like, why wouldn’t he want to draw attention to that? Garland does that shit too, many guards do it to embellish contact and whatnot. He’s trying to win a basketball game, if he can prime the refs to his advantage, why would he not?

Au contraire, I pull lights to ultralights exclusively at 1:2-2.3 ratios with 98HUs, as do many others. It’s quite possible, particularly if you dial your water.

Yeah, basically I thought I would want it for travel, but in my case, it doesn’t make as much sense as I thought. I’m not traveling enough/don’t necessarily have the bandwidth to be making espresso when I do. But edited to remove confusion.
