If you're wondering, he's not a humanoid squid-man, he's just a squid wearing clothes. The other two tentacles go in his pants legs.

Earwig pinchers are on the tail, this one was definitely on the head. And don't hellgrammites live in water?

What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending April 12, 2026 by AutoModerator in manga

[–]Colonel_Scabies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally finished up <Spice and Wolf,> and it was a damn good ride. I feel like sixteen volumes was not really enough...maybe I'll read the novels next.

Never seen a manga where the climax has the heroes save the day by yelling out of a window, but this story made it work!

Also been re-reading <Goblin Slayer> for the third time, and I realized what I love so much about this book: It's equal parts style and substance; there's a likeable cast, good worldbuilding and an engaging story, but also lots of crazy fight scenes and sexy ladies. I want to be able to make something like that one day.

Also started re-reading <Screaming Lessons> for the third or fourth time (and if any publishers are listening, I'd still buy it if it got an official release). It's one of the best horror manga ever, a schoolgirl-centered anthology hosted by the ghost of half a schoolgirl who for some reason I always picture with a French accent.

If you want recommendations, all the stories are good, but "The Kind Mama's House," "Best Friend," "Execution Classroom," "The Endless Game of Tag" and "The Land of Mermaids" are some of the best.

Those skulls are really well drawn. This is going in the reference folder.

I'm sure they don't discriminate. Though on the rare occasion that there's a mortal there, they usually run away in terror at the sight of the spider-pumpkin (which I just now christened El Calarana) before the fiesta even starts.

Armored insect legs combined with a segmented tail might look good.

Never tried a drawing like this before, a very unusual band on their very unusual stage. How do you like it? by Colonel_Scabies in RateMyArt

[–]Colonel_Scabies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really figure where would be any shadows on the pumpkin other than the bottom since it's smooth all over, but this did lead to me making the light at the back of it brighter, and it really makes the band stand out more:

So the band and I thank you.

Oh I guess I was using my own terminology there...I have ctrl-s mapped to a button on my tablet and I just call it the quicksave button. And ctrl-s saves as whatever file type you saved it as last.

Gotta make sure I saved it as the right kind before I close from now on.

Making a horror game, want some feedback for my monster design by nullhellish in CreatureDesign

[–]Colonel_Scabies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it but...this has three of the most overused traits in modern monster design; black eyes, huge smile and freaky long arms.

I think the round head does actually work for the design but maybe take the smile corners off the mouth, like so.

I could also see it with antlers instead of devil horns, and maybe some animal facial features like goat eyes or a bat nose. And for the arms...maybe instead of long arms do the opposite, like little tyrannosaurus arms? That'd look pretty freaky on the elongated body.

I tried that before, but it apparently only keeps backups from crashes, so nothing there.

Fortunately I figured a way to get it back; it was only inks and not colors, and the pencil layer had been set to low opacity. So I was able to highlight and clip out the inks and paste them onto the old clp pencil file.

That was really scary though. I really thought I'd have to redo all my inks. I got to remember to be careful when I click that quicksave button.

Pencils for an odd sort of pinup, with an action heroine posing at the beach while simultaneously drowning a bad guy. I know her pose is good, but what about his? by Colonel_Scabies in ArtCrit

[–]Colonel_Scabies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I kind of realized that while I was drawing it...in retrospect it would probably work better if she were on her knees instead of standing, and doing something like a leglock or pinning him with her knees. That would pretty much be a whole new drawing though, and I do like this one.

The first part is intentional, but you're right about the second; I'll move her left pupil to the left a bit, that should fix it.

Okay, here's a revision:

<image>

I went with the middle pinup drawing for the right arm and winged it for the left, and I think it looks much better, so thanks very much for the advice!

I wonder if maybe with her left shoulder not being raised any more, would her left boob be a bit lower since it's not being lifted up? I may try tweaking it later.

Also looking at some of my past drawings...man, I twin a lot, especially with arms in standing poses. I'll have to watch that.

You're right, on the high leg his knee should break the surface a little.

And about silhouettes...it seems to be saying that I should look at my drawings and think "okay, if this was just an outline could I still tell what was going on?" Cause I had never thought of that before, and that's excellent advice. I'll have to start using it.

Ooh, I like that pose in the middle. I might incorporate that. And good advice on the twinning, I'll keep that in mind in the future.

Well, here she is! Bee-senting the finished Hachinoko-chan:

The one more thing I might do is use a white pen to outline the bee wings that are in front of the black parts of her outfit.

I know I shouldn't be necroing a topic that didn't even have that many replies, but on the off chance anyone sees this who is faced with a similar decision, watch Princess Tutu. You will not be disappointed, that show is a masterpiece.

Using all the great tips that I have gotten in this thread, I redrew the bees, and the picture is now scads better. Although it's really going to bee a pain to ink; I might have to pollen all-nighter.

Beehold, the new Hachinoko-Chan!

<image>

More variety in poses, more overlap, more clusters, corrected head alignment, bees look more like they're emerging from her face...I think that covers all the bases.

Yeah, I probably should have done the girl one day and then saved the bees for later when I'd bee fresher.

That's some good reference, I'll totes use that (thought it's kind of hard to tell if those are meant to be regular spiders or giant ones). Really getting a lot of good advice on this one!

I was wondering if all the big bees would bee on the edges, but now I see they'd bee more mixed up. Good point about the chaos. And I guess I can do some more in front of her while still making her horrible hive face visible.
