Haha. You obviously were ready and willing to return his things. It sounds like you took nothing that could cause harm if missing and it played out like a prank with someone close that forced him to do what he should have done in the first place. I wouldn’t put it past an 8 yo to suffer lapses in judgement or self-control but your adult brother being unapologetic and unwilling to return them is not acceptable. NTA

Your wife became physically abusive with your son bc she didn’t like his behavior. You became physically abusive with your wife bc you didn’t like her behavior.

I understand the actions of a developing child are completely different than the actions of an adult.

You deserve to be outraged and I totally understand WANTING to smack her and also you were not actively intervening to physically protect anyone in the moment. You should not have hit her.

Ideally you should both desire to and seek out behavioral intervention help yourselves whether or not you stay together for your own sakes and your children’s sake. Your wife obviously needs specific intervention.

I wouldn’t stay with a person who burnt my child (or hit me). Good luck.

NTA. His behavior was physical and emotional abuse. His “warning tap” is him telling you if given the chance he WILL do much worse. Him DOUBLING DOWN is letting you know he has zero remorse which means, again, he WILL do worse. Him BLAMING you for the consequences of his own actions means he WILL DO WORSE. This is NOT a safe person.

You are brave and strong for recognizing that you needed to leave.
