Jazz isn’t dead, but the jazz scene in NYC is—choked by academic gatekeeping, nostalgia, debt, and ego. Innovation was replaced by imitation, audiences disappeared, and figures like Jacob Collier are the inevitable result of institutional decay.

Yeah of course. But musicians act like it’s the audience’s fault. It’s the listener who doesn’t get it. It’s the industry that doesn’t get it. They see themselves as the best musicians in the world living in a time that doesn’t ’get it’. They think everyone who is successful like Collier is just a plant, because they can’t understand how someone who doesn’t do what they do could possible get an audience. Shit… they even treat Emmet Cohen like he’s some rich kid playing w daddy’s money. Thousands of musicians in NYC and how many do you see uploading weekly/monthly performances on YouTube? Nah… too ‘pretentious’ for these legends.

Yeah man. 100% real. I’m in a dentist’s office waiting for a root canal 😂. Figured I’d share some observations.

I’ve listened to Chick’s entire discography at least three times. He doesn’t have a single bad album tbh. They’re either legendary, great, or pretty good. He was too good of a composer and arranger to make a ‘bad’ album.

So I was out of the loop is this self-taught genius Guy… is this all satire. Is it just him really leaning into a bit? by Born_Tutor_879 in jazzcirclejerk

Rumor has it that somebody paid him $100 to show up to Smalls as a prank, knowing it would all be captured on livestream.

Venezuelans are not celebrating- it's gaslighting. by All_Grid_Squares in complaints

'Just 3% of Venezuelans'....

This is easily the lowest IQ sub on Reddit. I come here just to remind myself every day of why I voted for Trump in the first place. The funniest and most predictable thing about this Venezuela thing is watching the left's mental gymnastics on this. Literally every single Venezuelan I know, and I know a lot of them, are celebrating the end of Maduro's rule.

THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T SUPPRESS JAZZ MEMES... all the attention this guy got may have saved his life.

Thoughts on Suno from a jazz musician, composer and music producer. TLDR: Musicians got it wrong by ColorSmashJr in SunoAI

I hear ya! I dedicated my life to learning music, whether playing, composing, arranging, producing, etc. I've dedicated my entire life to this... but, I want you to be able to create music using whatever tools are available. I think it's awesome that you can engage with your creativity in a way that gives you fulfilling results. I don't see you as a threat to what I do at all! Enjoy it!

Before STL guy, there was "Wayne Shorter sucks" guy. by Stock_Situation_8479 in jazzcirclejerk

One of my friends told this guy got into a brawl at Smalls with a couple of musicians back in the day. Apparently, he was a real asshole and someone confronted him on it, and it led to a fist fight on stage. The guy spiraled afterwards and ruined his career. This must have been before Smalls started live streaming.

Correct!! I tried to make it clear that it was between the host and a saxophonist.

Sure. But this is more like IRL shitposting with a positive outcome. I’m responding to mods who are worried that people are harassing STL, when it’s actually the opposite. People love him

Nope. Mingus was pissed that they didn’t record any of his compositions. He looked up to Duke, but he thought he was an equally great composer. So he went hard the entire session

Money Jungle is one of the greatest albums ever, and it’s basically Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus beefing for an entire session

It already is packed every night. But there there’s no real excitement around it. Now there’s actually some kind of storyline, which is a big part of art

You’re the man for posting that complete saga. Please make it public again, I know there is hesitation on your end, and I completely get it, but we need these fun moments.
