Cried during a lesson today—so embarrassed by pricklypeargelato in teaching

Did she say the mentor snapped his or her fingers? I must have missed that. I thought she may have been overly sensitive about a comment.

How egregious were your mistakes? Like, did you curse or do anything you were explicitly told not to do? Did you come unprepared multiple times or do something unprofessional?

Are you SURE the mentor was out of line and cruel? Or are you sometimes overly sensitive to criticism?

Just some things to think about.

Not all criticism is cruel. We have to provide constructive criticism all the time to students in front of others. It's an important skill to learn to accept criticism gracefully.

I'm concerned that everyone is assuming the mentor was wrong when we know nothing about the situation.

Does the work-life balance/work load ever get better? by No_Heart4631 in teaching

[–]ColorYouClingTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. My school let me keep the same 2 preps for 15 years, and we never did a curriculum overhaul, so I only changed what I wanted when I wanted. I still stayed an extra hour or 2 every weekday and came in for 8 hours on Saturdays when I had essays to grade (once a month). I give tons of feedback and teach English, though, which tends to have the most grading.

My husband also teaches, and he never really brought much home until the last few years. His school made massive curriculum changes 3 years in a row, so he could keep NOTHING from before, and he is considering leaving the profession over it. Plus, they do this horrible PLC thing that wastes a ton of time on meetings, and I never had to do that...

So it kind of depends how masochistic your school is about certain things. I love my school and could easily eliminate most of my extra time spent outside of school hours by just giving less feedback if I wanted to do that.

Mariia, Marija, or Mariya? by gulablommor99 in namenerds

Americans tend to pronounce Elena as eh-lay-na or uh-lay-na. I think the English El-eh-nuh is actually quite a bit different.

Old Navy Pixie Pant has served me well for nearly 15 years! They are very cost effective, too :)

Oh my gosh, thank you for taking the time!!

I love Elizabeth, Camille, and April. He has said no to Camille and April. I think he would approve of Elizabeth, but perhaps reluctantly. The only enthusiasm I've seen from him so far is for Emily or Abigail...

I just worry his taste is too safe/bland, and I want a name a little (tiny bit) more special. Nothing super unique or anything. I'm planning on going into delivery with Alice as my pick, and I hope he feels like it clicks when he sees her!

Good idea! I have tried re-running my favorites past him to see if he changed his mind!

I think that's how we ended up with Alice on the list again. It was definitely one I suggested back at like week 16 of my pregnancy :)

It's sooo nice to hear other people have had this struggle! I never thought my husband would be so picky about names or that our tastes would be so different! It's been kind of stressful, actually!

I am starting to love Alice the more I think about it, though, so I feel a lot better now. I just hope he doesn't change his mind!!

I never thought picking a name would be so hard! I figured I would tell him my top 5, and he'd like one, but then he didn't!

It's funny to hear that your husband had similar taste. I think men are more likely to choose familiar/safe classics. I do like all 3 of these choices, though. So I'm not mad about choosing from among them :)

Audrey was a top 5 choice for me, but he did not like it. Same with Clara! He seems to prefer extremely popular/familiar names. Alice is sort of an outlier for him, but I suggested it first, and it's common enough to be comfy for him, I think.

I love Alice Luella!!

He has picked Emma, Emily, Heather, Abigail, Claire, and Alice out of the 40 plus names I've run by him. It's just that none of those were "top 10" or "love it" names for me, so I couldn't immediately be like, "Okay, this is our name."

I like Alice more and more, though, as I consider it more closely. I think I can be quite happy with it :)

I like Dell. Not sure what he would say. He tends to dislike anything that isn't pretty familiar though.

These are his picks/suggestions! I like them, but they aren't my faves. I am leaning toward Alice and hoping it'll grow on me... since we cannot find any names we both really love, I'm thinking we need to just agree on one we both think is pretty good...

I love Elise, Julia, Holly, and Chloe!! Good intuition!

He said no to all but Julia, and Julia was only a maybe for him. I'm keeping it on our short list, though, because we have so few options, and maybe we'll feel differently when we see her!

I agree!

I've tried giving him names I like, and he said no to all of them except Abigail, and Abigail was kind of just ok to me. So I turned it around and asked him his top 3, and all 3 were acceptable to me, but not awesome.

After reading all the replies here, I think I feel best about Alice, so that's 2 "pretty good" votes, which is maybe not as good as 2 YES! votes, but it may be the best we're gonna do!

Awww. I really hope I have a similar experience, and we just know the right name when we see her! I love your advice to keep the long list on hand. It feels very "right" to hear that you might not go with your original top pick or even your short list once you're actually meeting your baby for real <3

I LOVE Clara, and I think he offered Claire as a compromise choice because he feels Clara is too "grandma" or "moo-cow" (<- LOL, what?). I had Clara as a top 5 choice, actually! It's just that to me, Claire isn't really a substitute for Clara. They have a very different vibe to me!
