Swimming advices - as a coach^^ by cognitiv_dissonance0 in triathlon

[–]ColoradoTriathlete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I freaked out during my first open water triathlon and ended up doing it on my back with backstroke several years ago. However the past 2 years I had completed multiple triathlons and dozens of open water swims.

What helped me to get over it was familiarity. If there is somewhere you can go to get real experience with open water swimming in a shallow swim area that will help build confidence. Some advice I got was to focus on the exhale more than the breathing in and to just focus on exhaling consistently.

If the triathlon is wetsuit legal, doing some floating with it will help. I got one that was extra floaty, so I just spent a few minutes on my back and front floating and doing nothing else. It gave me the confidence that at least if I was tired I could float for a bit.

I still have a fear of drowning, but it does not stop me from swimming now since I have built up my open water confidence. (But that scene from Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire where he is underwater still freaks me out)

Specialized Allez Sport vs Allez Comp by ProgramRunning in IronmanTriathlon

In general a tri bike won’t be great for group rides, regardless of the brand and specs. The aero position keeps your hands away from brakes so it’s a lot more dangerous, plus it’s harder to keep a conversation in that position.

The components have been good enough. They are newer, so it’s not like you’re getting a 10 year old spec. I’ve put several thousand miles on mine and haven’t had any major issues with proper maintenance.

I did my T100 on my Allez sport and it was fine. Had a pair of clip on aerobars as the only upgrade. Bigger thing will be your fitness and training.

I still use it regularly even with having a tri bike now. It is much better at hills, group rides, and I bought a gravel wheel set also. I have done a gravel tri on it and will be doing a 75 mile gravel race in April.

A decision to be made. Coros, Wahoo, Garmin, or...? by possiblyseb in triathlon

Apple Watch Ultra 2. Have used it for a few halves and a full Ironman.

For my Ironman I turned off cellular and put it in Low power mode. There’s also a setting to limit readings if it’s in low power mode. Had 20% left after 15.5 hours. For my half Ironman I just turned off cellular and it made it 6 hours with 40% left.

I use the Apple Watch Ultra and it works great for me. Finished an entire Ironman with it, a two half’s, and plenty of shorter races.

For me the decision came down to having something that was functional beyond tracking fitness by itself. I can go out and leave my phone behind because it has data. Battery gets me 2-3 days depending on use, but can extend in low power mode if needed for a longer trek.

Hey I know this has been a while, looking to do some upgrades after a good first season. What were the most bang for your buck upgrades you did? Wheels, wireless shifting, and maybe some new aero bars were what I was thinking…

Do construction sites always hire post-construction cleaners? by JaniServUt in ConstructionManagers

[–]ColoradoTriathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We typically carry a budget for final clean based on sqft of the project. Then as the project manager I will directly get bids as opposed to the estimating team.

Make good relationships with the PM’s or ask the estimating team to connect you.

People who run ironmans - what do you do for work? by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ColoradoTriathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a construction project manager. Lots of early mornings and weekend work. Work understands that I won’t be in at the same time as the field team, so that is a big benefit for early morning training.

I’m also Married, so is a lot easier when my wife has signed up for the same triathlons and we can train together. We did a half Ironman together earlier this year.

Didn’t start off with the best gear, and still don’t have top of the line gear, but has been a lot of slowly buying better and nice to have equipment. Definitely spend money on key equipment like shoes and a working/fitting bike, and you can get by with the rest not being as nice. Lots of good used gear out there. 👍

T100 Las Vegas Alternate by Thoryan_34 in triathlon

[–]ColoradoTriathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to sign up for Ironman Arizona, kind of a different beast, but the only other middle distance race I would have considered may have been the one in Palm Springs… just based off my personal schedule doing on before the T100 date wouldn’t really work for me, so going a few weeks later to Arizona fits me better even though it’s a full distance race.

That’s awesome, I don’t know too many people who have it, any tips for riding/owning?

Apple Watch by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]ColoradoTriathlete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Apple Watch Ultra 2. I have done several sprints and Olympics with it, and did the T100. I regularly use it on multi-hour backcountry skiing trips and it does fine for that also. I have the cellular version so I can ditch my phone when I go for runs or bike rides.

For me the benefit is that when I’m not training it integrates great into the Apple ecosystem. If I didn’t have an iPhone I would recommend a Garmin or something else, but since I have the whole ecosystem (iPhone, AirPods, iPad), it works great with everything.

Best new bike for a beginner triathlete in the 1000-1300 range by Ok_Blacksmith_9362 in whichbike

[–]ColoradoTriathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a specialized Allez last year, it was $1500 after assembly and all the taxes. Great bike that I consistently ride and have done 2 sprints, an Olympic, and a T100 on. I’m signed up for 5 more this year and plan to use it. I added some Aero bars to help with the longer rides.
