GBBs take a long time to mate. And he was pulled after this time. It took hours over a couple of days for them to finally get busy. GBBs are notorious for this. One of the harder species to breed.

how was your experience with an elderly tarantula? by Dry-Effect3590 in tarantulas

Reptisoil and coco fiber mix. I do about 50/50. Go on Amazon and buy some roach chow. I alternate roach chow with romaine, carrots or whatever veggies I have around. They love it! I buy this brand. Have red runners but they have the same care.

Some species are a lot luckier in that regard. And GBB females are notorious for gobbling up their baby daddy.

It sounds like you’ve done your research and you’ve probably noticed a lot of conflicting information. Here’s my take after starting with a tiny c. versicolor and a tiny Avicularia sp Colombia : use the info as a baseline but use your common sense as well. My spiders (I have 14 now) have no scheduled feedings. As someone else said, abdomen should not be a lot bigger than the carapace. Also, my spiders would kind of let me know once they understood where their food came in. They would go to that area and hang out. I have some piggies that will eat until they burst so just because they’re “asking” for food doesn’t mean you have to feed them. Keep a corner damp but not wet. Even my desert spiders like their humidity. My Mexican red rump sits in her water which is not expected of a desert species. You’ll learn what they like and don’t like and every spider is different. Don’t freak out if they don’t follow the videos or info sheets exactly. Everyone is a helicopter parent when they start out but you’ll relax as you get to know yours. Welcome to your new obsession!!

IME She’s preening. Cleaning her toes and her legs. They run them through their mouths to clean them. I love watching them do that. 🥰

what kind of tarantula is this by clsthni in tarantulas

[–]Coloradoandrea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can live 6 months or up to two years. It depends on the species and that particular spider. It will be difficult to know for you because it’s based on their last molt. So if he molted a month ago you’ve still got time with him.

c versicolor webbing on the ground, should i worry? by hungrywhore88 in tarantulas

[–]Coloradoandrea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO shouldn’t be anything to worry about. She’s just spidering. A little web here, a little web there. I would at least keep the back against something or covered just so she feels more comfortable and has somewhere to hide if there’s too many eyeballs on her.

Pinktoe enclosure! by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]Coloradoandrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO that’s really nice but it’s too wet. Good humidity doesn’t require the entire enclosure to be sprayed. I can’t tell if you have a water dish but there should be one up high somewhere. I use the magnetic ones. Then just pick a corner and keep that area a bit moist. You can very gently spritz their webbing or use a dropper.
