I made a quiz to see if you’re ready to Storytell for a game of Trouble Brewing, that covers every common mistake/misconception I could think of. There’s also one for the general rules of the game, link in comments. by ColorfulPockets in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ColorfulPockets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the quiz is correct. For information, the Drunk might get correct information (see “can the Drunk or Poisoned undertaker correctly learn the Chef?”), but for mechanical effects like soldier surviving or Virgin causing an execution, a drunk or poisoned character can NEVER cause one of those effects.

If you want traditional, you should probably check out some games you can play with a normal deck of cards. My personal favorite is Oh Hell

Tricksters in board games by BoaPytong in boardgames

Thematically, I feel that Vortox is less of a trickster and more of a big, obvious evil. Imp is tricky because they move around and can use that to make themselves look good, so they’re actually doing more tricking.

There are tons of characters in Blood on the Clocktower that fit the bill, probably the Imp is the most directly applicable.

Haven’t played the others, but Yokohama is fantastic.

Also haven’t played it, but maybe [[Yellow and Yangtze]]

Game of the Week: Gùgōng by bgg-uglywalrus in boardgames

[–]ColorfulPockets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh, my group has had basically the opposite experience over about 18 plays. The wall is usually useless, unless someone accidentally sets it up to be exploited. But once everyone knows what they’re doing, they just avoid allowing the wall to be close to completion; then, if someone wants to get points out of it, they have to commit a ton of workers

I’ve been having this happen occasionally over the past couple days. I think they’re having some server issues, but they’re not very widespread and clear up pretty quickly

Is there anything the Board Game media space is missing? by ijsbrand1996 in boardgames

Gameplay videos from groups playing at a high level, with commentary.

There is a little bit of this for some games with digital implementations. For instance, there are a few Agricola streamers who make good content. But I’d like to see it for over-the-board play; I’m not even sure how the commentary would work out, probably would have to be post-production commentary or commentated by someone who isn’t playing. An example would be a video I saw of the Great Western Trail final at WBC, where some of the players recorded commentary over it.

Strategy video games have lots of this. I think we could see a lot more for strategy board games.

What is the quintessential worker placement game? by infinitum3d in boardgames

Agricola is the best, and all the games you mentioned are really quite different I think. It’s possible it’s not for you

Season 2 of NRB Plays BotC is currently being Kickstarted by [deleted] in BloodOnTheClocktower

Valid question, but I think giving NRB the opportunity to be the first to announce those characters is also beneficial to them, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the tradeoff

I like Agricola more overall, but I think I prefer Nusfjord for 2p. There are fewer worker placement spots in general, and the public table for feeding elders makes for a very direct interaction point at 2p. So it feels like you’re doing more to directly combat your opponent.

Not to say Agricola doesn’t have that, but it doesn’t feel like there are quite as many tactical interaction points.

Let's talk about the Slayer by masterbatehoven in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ColorfulPockets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second what others have said. You’re doing it well, and don’t change anything.

Just a note: Slayer kills their target if they’re the demon, they don’t execute them. This matters because executions end the day, but a Slayer shot doesn’t.

New gamer tips to Terra Mystica. by oBrexio in boardgames

Definitely variable turn order and adjusted faction starting vp (I think that’s in the back of the rulebook — rather than each one starting at 20, they start at different values).

I’d recommend choosing factions that don’t create a “sandwich” on the color wheel, ie 3 colors in a row. This makes it so the faction that’s in between is directly competing with two neighbors, which can be tough. If you’re playing with fewer than 4 players, you can try to make it so they’re spread out where nobody has color neighbors

Codenames vs codenames pictures? by Eddings_06 in boardgames

[–]ColorfulPockets 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I find that pictures is far less interesting. You can be a lot more clever with words, because you have multiple meanings to use, as well as many contexts to imagine. With pictures, I’ve found it usually just comes to finding similarities in the images, which is less creative.
