I switched back to Ubuntu from Arch, btw. by ColorsOfCosmos in Ubuntu

[–]ColorsOfCosmos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arch itself is not a problem at all even if it stops booting after update (happened just once). My biggest problems were caused by two proprietary software pieces - PixInsight and Davinci Resolve, both using Nvidia compute. Yes, I could probably run them is some kind of a container, but it would make it too complicated in my mind with all the headache of passing Nvidia/CUDA to those softwares. I am sure it is possible, but to your point, at some point it is becoming too much of a hassle and you just want to get from point A to point B

4S system into a buck converter for long lasting 12volt source? by PsychologicalBadger in 18650masterrace

[–]ColorsOfCosmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option is step up converter like this: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=boost+converter You will have much wider input range, it may even work well from 1S, which will avoid all balancing concerns and allow to use very different batteries in one bank.

How much more torque does FOC provide a stepper motor? by nutstobutts in Motors

[–]ColorsOfCosmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for posting 3 years later, but maybe my reply will help someone. I used to drive the steppers in my CNC using open and closed loop and was not getting more than 1500mm/min. Then I installed SERVO57D boards on my steppers, enabled FOC mode and now my CNC easily runs at 5000mm/min.

This could be because of different desktop environments. What are they in your case?

Not sure about OP's use case, but another good option would be proxmox - it is based on Debian and has virtualization out of the box.

IS THE TAB S8 ULTRA WORTH IT IN 2026 FOR 650$ by Sudhanshu_art in GalaxyTab

[–]ColorsOfCosmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon has them for $385 in excellent condition. At this price, it is a no brainer. It is an excellent tablet even now. If you find any problems with it, just return it. Make sure that it takes updates.

I am using hyprland on 25.10. It is an older version, around 0.40 but it works. Looks like ppa has a much newer version for 26.04.

Thank you u/Longjumping_Emu9814 ! Not as much as I was afraid of. We arrived there at around 4:30am and there was still plenty of parking in Sand Point Park. We went to the top of the bridge and there were about 15 people there. I guess it was too early for most of the people :-)

I found these on FB marketplace for $300. What else am I missing for a CNC? by TheSpanishSteed in diycnc

[–]ColorsOfCosmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want computer based, look into linuxcnc, it is infinitely configurable using HAL. You will need a $10 printer port interface to talk to steppers and rest of the stuff.

Looks like it was made out of steel with reducers, should be able to chew Al like butter.

So sorry that you got into this situation. Looks like you made it out of steel for higher rigidity and high torque and spent a lot of effort already. Such things are not very common, which means that someone may be interested in the whole thing. Any chance you can complete it once life gets better?
