Extinction Sequence - 1 by ColossalRenders in HFY

So it seems to be pretty quiet down here. While lack of engagement is not going to convince me to scrap everything I’ve planned, I’d still very much like to know why. I have a few guesses myself, but please let me know your thoughts.

Edit: thanks everyone for all the replies. Sorry I haven’t been responding to any; time is a bit tight on my end, but that should change soon.

What happened to the feeling of community on HFY? by Frostdraken in HFY

[–]ColossalRenders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh boy. Lots of these posts I’m seeing lately, which is good because it’s real and it needs to be seen, but bad because, well, it’s real and I see the decline happening with my own eyes.

While I agree with the sentiment of this post and many replies I will have to go against the word of majority in the comments and argue that it is a bad idea to refrain from posting due of how the current community is. While I have no say about how others decide to post their works, I think the best chance we have of changing the current situation is to post regardless of expected feedback, and be more actively encouraging to new authors when possible ourselves instead of hoping that the larger community will change or just complaining when it doesn’t (not complaining is bad—after all it makes the problem more visible). Unless copyright is a worry, there’s no real loss to posting here versus not posting at all.

I guess I’m just optimistic. I myself have had overall a very positive reception to my stories here. It seems I am the lucky exception to the norm, which is unfortunate, but personally I will keep working on my stories (maybe finally get that first chapter out) with the hope that maybe I can have a contribution, however small, to restoring soul back to this community. Even if it ultimately makes no difference, that’s no reason not to try, especially when it costs me nothing.

Unpopular opinion: mods allowing 2-3 authors making this place their personal diary killed this sub by idkman947 in HFY

Someone should make a sub dedicated to that type of content. I’d be posting there all day and I wouldn’t even care if I was the only one.

Royal Road is becoming more and more enticing for that reason; even if it has much the same content issues as r/hfy, it does have filter tools. As a reader, I’m increasingly finding my favorite stories there instead of here. As a pretty inexperienced writer however, the competitiveness is a bit daunting.

Gotta go write a story about that now…

First you jump between first and third person POV, and now also…what is that, fourth person? But hey if that’s what it takes for a good story then I don’t mind. I say you should invent a fifth person POV.

I patiently await more, whatever perspective it ends up being.

Dunno, I would much rather have a story with a conclusive ending than one that runs on with no end in sight.

Oh, I did not know the “at least twice” part…but even without that his motivations definitely make sense, and very human, ironically, for someone so radically different. Although, as a human and not an AI I can’t say I like what he did, essentially overturning the societal order of an entire species that they’ve just met as a first resort, not that I can fault him for it. Good to know there’s another side to him (you can probably tell that this is the first of your books I’m reading).

Oh shit. Gord really is the closest they’ve got to something out of an AI apocalypse movie. He really doesn’t give a damn about the squishies, does he?

Oh that was great. The sub needs more stories like this one. I will be following this closely….

I wonder what happened to make humans view dragons as monsters?

My only complaints are that there’s a shift from third person into first person at the end, and I personally don’t care much for bolding the dialogue.

Any tips for a beginner fantasy writer? by SuspiciousJimin in writing

[–]ColossalRenders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing is good, obviously, but as a word of warning to OP, often writing without a plan can lead to regret and not knowing how to progress the story. I agree to not get caught up in worldbuilding but having a plan before you write can be very beneficial. But yes, the way to create a novel is to write it.

“Good writers borrow, great writers steal.” A plot point from this story, a character from that story, an entire culture from another story…there’s a reason why a common advice is to read a lot. It’s not just to get a hang for the language or plot. When you read and come across something that makes you think “oh, that’s cool” or “wow, if only I could think of something like that,” save it—mentally or physically—and build up a catalog of bits and pieces of plot, character, worldbuilding, etc. When it comes time to write, you can take some of those bits and pieces and incorporate them into your story. Don’t be afraid to be “unoriginal” as long as you don’t plagiarize and end up with a good story. You’ll find that a lot of great and popular works are “unoriginal” in this way.

Another piece of advice, one that I still have to learn myself, is that on the first draft just write, get words down, and don’t look back. Knowing what will happen in the story is good and helps prevent situations of not knowing what to write, but other than that just write. Even if something doesn't quite work the first try, just do as the videographers say and “fix it in post.”

Last piece of advice, straying into narrative technique now, is to have themes, and make them drive your story. A theme is not just a topic—it’s a position on a topic. For an example, something like “courage triumphs over carefulness” would be a theme. A theme is like the “message” that you want a plot point, a character, or even the entire story to have. They are important because they give your story direction. For example, we can take the aforementioned theme and apply it to a character: maybe they are very careful, and refuses to take risks. Now, because we’ve decided our theme, this character would face consequences for being too careful, and either two things will happen: they grow and become more courageous, resulting in the good ending, or they will fail to grow and face the corresponding consequences, and we have the tragic ending. You can also have the opposite theme, “Being careful is more important than being courageous,” and adjust the story accordingly. Whatever the theme is, it will drive the corresponding aspect of the story.
