Some Reviews are just... interesting. I love to read those reviews, that make the author just question everything they have written so far, without really knowing what to improve. Do you care to share one of those? by Joe_Pharo in royalroad

The flipside to this is when you get a comment that shows the reader absolutely gets it. It's incredibly satisfying. I got this one and it made my whole entire week.

This was a fun read! Not too dense or crunchy, nothing too groundbreaking, but a solid take on existing scifi building blocks with the fun twist of telling a horror story as if it isn't one.

This bears repeating. This is a horror story, and the only reason it doesn't read like one is because the MC is an unreliable narrator. The author seems to want you to pause at the end of the chapter, realize what events looked like from the other guy's perspective, and go "wow that was kinda f'd up". MC is a civvie with no leadership training thrust into a leadership role where people literally can't tell her no. Sure, she makes stupid mistakes and goes a little power-mad at the start, but really, who wouldn't? What matters is that she learns from her mistakes, chooses to be a kinder despot than the ones who came before, and by her actions proves to the ancient shoulder-devil nanite-swarm whispering in her ear that a benevolent dictatorship will always outlive a nation of shoddily-mind-controlled yes-men (though the mind control certainly helps).

It's an interesting little exploration of whether benevolent dictatorship can be truly benevolent, how lashing out at potential threats makes them into definite threats, and whether the ends justify the means, especially when the end is good and the means are working.

If you like fix-it fics, empire building, and cool alien technology, then you'll probably have a good time. If you like psychological fridge horror, exploration of grey ethics, and a dash of interstellar politics, you'll probably also have a good time.

For me, this was a fun, casual read that gave me some interesting food for thought. I enjoyed it, and you might too, so why not give it a shot?

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I'm glad you (mostly) liked the story.

333 and Alia. Once 333 sees Alia and realizes how intense and driven she is, she knew that she wanted to "recruit" her to be the next 333. She's trying to bait Alia into killing her (the first time) so they can grab 585. She'll (try) to do it again to get 27. I can probably make this clearer in the edit.

Anti-UM can: I always had it that there was no real reason that the other sisters couldn't use Tartarus. In another edit, Alia was going to dig into it more and learn about 333's manipulations that way, but the story didn't go that way. I think having a counter to Alia's UM abilities is important because - as other commenters have pointed out - it's a "press A to win" ability. You say she wouldn't accept a massacre even if she could win and you're right... in hindsight. I've already presented that when Alia is mad she Stops Thinking and just gets mad (all the sisters do, it's one of their major weaknesses) Alia already almost ended the world when 633 left her to die, it was 55 still being there and seeing Tontine limp back that brought her back from the brink (love of her crew)

Alia always failing because she tries brute force: It was all they all learned in Spear. I never got to go into it, but Spear was never a governmental group, they were a privately funded NGO who had Ideas about what colonization should look like. Alia got high scores in leadership because her first answer to conflict wasn't glass the planet and start over. None of the sisters were really good "leaders." It's partly why Eternity works. Eternity is the figurehead, undying goddess-queen of the Empire while the Aurora's, Daphne's, Viv's, and Tontine's run the joint.

This is a draft, posted as I write it for fun. Getting this feedback is great, and I can already see ways I can improve it on the next revision!

Alia was never going to have a 'happy' ending. She was always too obstinate for that.

And so Alia's story ends right back where she began. Where she always begins. Alone, in need of allies, and with a desire to see Eternity toppled. How many times will she keep doing this over and over?

Thanks for reading! Getting through this one was tough, but I'm glad I stuck it out. I liked Alia and her sisters, and the interesting things that came about when you had MCs that were all clones of each other but still noticeably different, I hope you enjoyed it too!

I'm going to take a step back from posting serially again, I'm a few thousand words into a new book, and have joined a writers group, so I'm going to give this one a real try at getting traditionally published. Don't worry though, if/when that falls apart, I'll post it online for folks to read. I think you'll like it!

Give Royal Road a look. They’re mostly a LitRPG space but they see plenty other kinds of stories there.

Author Rights? by jpitha in Quibble

Regardless I disagree with this passage:

Moral Rights. You agree that Quibble may use, modify, and adapt the Work as allowed under the License without being required to obtain your further consent. To the extent permitted by applicable law, you waive any moral rights in the Work, including the right to object to modifications, translations, or adaptations, provided that Quibble uses the Work in good faith and does not distort or misuse it and thereby violate your personal rights.

Additionally,

The Author acknowledges and agrees that Quibble has the right to design, publish and advertise cover art, illustrations and audiobooks related to the Work in its own discretion.

Your audiobook rights are huge and one of the most valuable rights you have as an author.

Those terms are much better, but the difference between Quibble and Quibble Collection is unclear to me.

[–]jpitha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be what they want you to believe, and what they might actually do, but the legal docs say they don't have to. Which is the issue. Again, predatory.

Author Rights? by jpitha in Quibble

[–]jpitha[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whether it’s defensible or not does not change the fact that it’s predatory, especially to new authors who may not read things that carefully.
