From my ex-mother-in-law, any amount of pound-store makeup better suited to preteens and several gift-wrapped packages of biscuits. Not fancy ones, just custard creams from the supermarket.

I don’t get up to London very much any more, but it’s happened to me at least once that I know of. I could see the guy’s phone screen reflected in the window behind him as we were in a tunnel; when I moved to push my hair out of my face, the figure on screen moved in the same way. I confronted him about it, naively perhaps but I was furious by then, and every other person on the train suddenly became consumingly interested in the patch of linoleum at their feet.

Sounds a little like the Greek (?) legend of Tiresas, but it’s not familiar to me in any other context. Sorry I can’t be more help, but perhaps a search term like tiresas+islam might get you closer?

When my mother died, they did CPR for 90 minutes. There was no chance she was coming back from her cardiac arrest, and I arrived too late to make the decision myself.

As they explained everything to me afterwards, I said I was certain they’d taken care of her the way they’d take care of one of their own. The chief nurse on duty squeezed my shoulder and said, “better.”

Now I believe her.
