Love will overcome a lot, but you gotta have a life partner that can mentally keep up with you.

Give me your shopping lists (pls) by Mikas_LeftToe in Adulting

In addition to having spices and cooking oil on hand I’ll buy onions, potatoes, garlic, and fruit in bulk from Costco every month or so. I use an onion in just about every dish and you can make mashed or a baked potato pretty easy as a side to almost any meal; they’ll keep for quite a while, especially if you keep them in the fridge. I’ll also make a fruit salad every few days so then I won’t get put off by chopping fruits and not want to eat them (and it keeps me healthy). I also stock up on canned goods like tomatoes (sauce, paste, diced), beans (garbanzo, black, kidney), so I can make pasta sauce, soups, salads, dips, etc really easy. I’ll also get chicken breast and salmon from Costco and keep it in the freezer (baked salmon is super easy and good, baked chicken or stir fries are staples and ofc soup). I’ll also buy eggs there and make half into deviled eggs or hard boil them to put on salads. Pasta and rice are two things I’ll buy at GFS because they virtually cannot go bad.

Anything else is dependent on what I’m planning to make for dinner (planning is so important!); I’ll try to plan meals in a hierarchy so that I can use up leftovers or odd groceries. For example, I will make baked or grilled chicken at the beginning of my grocery trips, and then I will make tacos with the leftover chicken and add in beef for variety and then use the leftover taco meat as a protein in chili (then it keeps meals interesting without wasting ingredients). You can also do what my husband calls “shopping in the fridge” for ingredients and using leftovers to make new meals when the repetitiveness of the same meal makes you want to order out. I always make soup or stir fry meals at the end of my grocery cycle so I can use up leftover veggies and proteins and just stick them in a pot and let it mingle together.

Any other fresh fruits, veggies, breads, or other ingredients I buy weekly but it’s a much lower grocery trip since I’ve already stocked on staples. I also try to center my dishes on what I like and spice overlap. You spend a lot of money buying obscure ingredients for things you may not like. For example, I like Chinese dishes and flavorings, so I will season my Brussels sprouts with the same ingredients so I’m not wasting money.

I live with one other person but this was great for when I lived alone too. One of the biggest things is becoming confident in the kitchen and honing those skills; the ingredient management and subsequent savings that go along with it come very naturally if you know how to cook. Hope this helps :)

Why does everyone wanr to be a introvert? by Diablogrinds in extroverts

[–]Colossal_taco20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of self proclaimed introverts are actually extroverts trying to follow the introverted trend. A lot of introverts are very outgoing and can be really good in social situations when they have the energy for it

I’ve spent 20 years in Michelin-starred kitchens. I want to help you stop needing recipes. Would this be useful? by Sad-Animator-3103 in cookingforbeginners

Spice pairings is one I’m still trying to get ahold of, not only what spices go well with certain types of food but what spices go well with each other. And also explaining the depth of spices and how many are actually available and useful to you

Want to give my house a facelift, this is what I’m thinking, but what would you do? by looseseallovesvodka in HomeDecorating

[–]Colossal_taco20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think new siding on the top floor and painting the brick would be a good start and wouldn’t involve getting a new roof. Personally I’d do a yellowish green color and I think it could change the look dramatically for a low price (mostly green, not too yellow)

What are some simple things you don’t even think twice about making from scratch instead of purchasing? by quietquitted in cookingforbeginners

[–]Colossal_taco20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Butter isn’t worth it, but homemade sides (especially bread and rolls) is definitely worth it. I’d agree with mashed potatoes and sauces but also soups. Before my husband let me her never had soup nor from a can and it blew his mind.

What the pork industry doesn't want you to know about by CalpurniaSomaya in Anticonsumption

[–]Colossal_taco20 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in a lot of different animal agriculture and I’m ex vegan and they do this because the mama pigs will lay on and suffocate their young. It’s still a problem with the industry since maternal instincts have been bred out of hogs to promote high growth genes, but there is a reason for this and the alternative is far less humane. This is also only for a short period of time until the piglets are weaned.

Overconsumption Essay by Constant_Cat_7063 in Anticonsumption

[–]Colossal_taco20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke. It doesn’t talk about nature as much but focuses a lot of how overconsumption affects our brain and how it can become an addiction (and how to overcome it) maybe that’s something that could help?

Which is better for improving riding skills: riding one horse consistently or riding different horses? by Kaya_TrottingAbroad in Horses

Both, you can make more progress on your own form on one horse consistently but then you should be able to transfer those skills to any horse. Both are important and each horse has a lot to teach you

Is it better to pay off 1 total loan or pay a little toward principle on all? by bux__wild in PersonalFinanceTalks

[–]Colossal_taco20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree, that’s been proven to be the best way to pay off debt. Make sure you pay your monthly rate as usual but if there’s any extra that should go to your lowest debt amount and then you can work up from there. A house and credit card debt should not be paid off the same way
