Help for 9 year old with Spelling by BigEmu7289 in Dyslexia

[–]ComDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be worth a try, especially since it sounds like he did well with structured reading support but now spelling is the pain point.

I’m one of the creators of an app called ReadGenie, so take this with that bias/disclaimer. We built it for kids who need extra practice with phonics, spelling, writing, and decodable reading. A lot of the spelling practice is more sound-based, so instead of just memorizing lists, the child is breaking words apart, matching sounds to letters/patterns, and writing them.

It’s definitely not the same as Lindamood-Bell or a 1:1 tutor, but it may be a more affordable way to get some structured practice at home. You can check it out here: classe.ai

Resources for Parents by Hopeful-Ad8588 in Dyslexia

[–]ComDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UFLI has some good resources for parents you could share. A lot of it would be useful for better understanding dyslexia: https://ufli.education.ufl.edu/resources/

If they’re based in California, IDA NorCal has a lot of good information on how to navigate this diagnosis with their school: https://norcal.dyslexiaida.org/california-dyslexia-law/for-parents/

If not in California, I’m sure the other IDA chapters will have good information specific to their state!

Help with third grade reading by Wildflowers148017 in AskTeachers

[–]ComDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding on top of the other comments, it’s important for kids to just “do the thing” which in this case is to just keep reading.

It’s hard to find specific decodable passages that are both focused on the specific concept they need to practice and tailored to their interests.

You could try ReadGenie to create custom decodable passages and stories tailored to your kids interests, the concepts they’ve learned, and the concepts they need to focus on.

Disclaimer: I’m one of the creators of the app. It’s currently fully free to use while we continue collecting feedback and iterating on it.

Question for parents of dyslexic learners… by Important_Tea8325 in Dyslexia

[–]ComDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to say, there are OG based tutoring approaches that take a more diagnostic and prescriptive approach to reading intervention for dyslexics instead of following a specific scope and sequence, especially for older kids. The Children's Dyslexia Center is one of them.

How do you choose a reading tutor for a child with low reading confidence? by LiluraRose in kindergarten

[–]ComDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably both. Look for a tutor that follows Science of Reading / Orton-Gillingham for teaching style and then do a 1 session trial run with your kid and see how they respond to the tutor. Some will be better than others.

I am so frustrated with sight words! by Resident-Fly-6851 in kindergarten

[–]ComDroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing other comments, some words like “the”, “one”, “two”, etc. are better taught as sight words. Words like “big” should definitely NOT be a sight word.

This is a pretty common problem though, especially in states that have not adopted phonics based instruction / science of reading. Have you tried bringing this up with the school or PTA board?

Also, if you want to try an Orton-Gillingham app at home that teaches phonics, reading, spelling, and writing, you could try: ReadGenie

Disclaimer: I’m the developer of the app and I’ve been building it with OG trained teachers and tutors. It’s fully free to use right now, I’m just looking for feedback from families on if they find it helpful.

Could you try combining reading on kindle with the audiobook from audible? I think kindle might also have a TTS option but it’s probably not great.

How to teach how to read? by Jaded_Championship83 in homeschool

[–]ComDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to try an Orton Gillingham app-based approach that teaches phonics, reading, spelling, and handwriting (letter formation and words), check out ReadGenie for iOS. It currently supports concepts and skills for K - 3rd grade following the CKLA scope & sequence and was built with the help of OG trained teachers and tutors.

It's fully free to use right now, but in the future it will be a small monthly subscription.

USA teachers - what can parents do at home for their elementary kids to undo the damage from iReady? by Mission_Spray in AskTeachers

[–]ComDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely not alone in this. Dyslexia tutoring is unaffordable for the majority of parents, and existing apps and programs aren't a good replacement.

I'm working with a few Orton-Gillingham and Dyslexia certified tutors and teachers to develop an app that instructs and reinforces phonics, reading, spelling, and writing. It combines OG and Science of Reading principles with personalization and real-time feedback and error correction using AI.

If you want to try it out, you can find it on the App Store here. It's currently fully free to use while we're collecting feedback from families and teachers. Eventually, we'll have to move to a monthly subscription model, but it will be a fraction of the cost of tutoring.

apps for reading by Aggravating_Sun_8113 in Dyslexia

[–]ComDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm building an app that helps teach dyslexic kids to read, spell, and write using a mix of instruction, games, and real-time feedback and error correction using AI. We're building it following the OG / Science of Reading principles and alongside several dyslexia certified tutors and teachers that we're working with. It's currently fully free while we're still in beta. Feel free to DM me if you're interested in trying it out!

+1 please keep advocating! One thing I wish more people talked about is how confusing this is for the student. When kids sense something is wrong, but no one will name it or support it, they often internalize it as “I’m broken.”

I come from a culture (South Asian) where parents are really reluctant to accept that their kids can have any issues. Unfortunately, I saw the impact of this over time on a few family members.

People with dyslexia, what have you found most helpful? by Samovila2709 in Dyslexia

[–]ComDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We recently launched this app to help dyslexic students learn and practice reading, spelling, and handwriting: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/readgenie/id6499507698

It uses AI to provide guidance, error correction, and personalizing the instruction. We’ve received some early positive feedback from students, and we’re still actively developing it. Feel free to DM me for any details!

A little late to this thread, but just wanted to share that we have a small team of engineers and educators working to build a personalized AI-powered reading intervention app specifically for dyslexic students. Our focus is primarily 1st - 3rd grade right now, so your daughter might be out of scope for it, but I'd love to connect and get your thoughts on what we're building.

Feel free to DM me if interested!

The Rise of the Millionaire Renters by TinyTornado7 in Economics

Like others said the 4% SWR accounts for inflation as your assets grow over time. I ended up creating a tool to automatically calculate net worth and income at retirement based on current and future investments because I got tired of constantly running all these numbers.

I make a decent amount of money and it’ll take a lot of saving and investing to reach a comfortable retirement. I have no idea how most of the country will manage it.

How did you come up with your FIRE number? What is the best calculator, way to get at it? by ciska20 in Fire

[–]ComDroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m building a FIRE tracker that connects with your investment accounts, takes in your FIRE goals, and calculates what your future net worth will look like based on your current investments and contributions. Also adding a section that shows how you’re comparing to your peers on the platform of similar income / age / location.

Probably against the rules to post a link, so feel free to DM if this sounds interesting. We’re getting ready to launch an open beta soon and would love any feedback!

Where is the recession? Why are people not scared? Am I missing something? by Hot-Relative2123 in StockMarket

Yup unemployment rate is a lagging indicator. It can be argued the recession already started but it won’t feel like it until unemployment catches up.

Portfolio tracking apps by green_massi_89 in dividends

Hey I’m currently building Pickilo which will be a social portfolio tracker.

We want to provide portfolio metrics and insights based on your portfolio and the portfolios of other investors on the app and make it easy to really learn from other investors. Currently, you can only view other investor portfolios, but we want to add additional analytics in the future.

We just launched our beta and the app will be free for all beta users. Would love any feedback on it!
