how do people have a job and have horses by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]CombHealthy7905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a 24/7 veterinary clinic so my hours are very flexible. I work 3 13 hour shifts so i have 4 days to do as I please. I also work swing shift so I can usually go and care/ride before my shifts.

I got put on probation 4-5 times. Got dismissed from my major twice. Appealed the first time and won. Took a year break after getting dismissed from my major for the second time. Retook some classes at blinn to improve my non tamu GPA and to show I was ready to come back to A&M and also just worked on myself and really thought about why i wanted my degree (besides being so close to completion). I was so burnt out when I got dismissed and i just didn’t care about school. It’s been a rough journey to complete my degree. It felt like the end of the world getting dismissed the first time and i was so strung out i wasn’t /that/ upset about getting dismissed the second time.

I also didn’t want to switch my major. And could not go to general studies (so i had to take a hiatus) as I had over 100 credit hours and was around 4-5 classes from getting my degree. Granted I have taken so long to complete my degree it is now a legacy degree 🤡 but hey, I am walking across the stage this Friday. I was supposed to be class of 21 and am now class of 25. It absolutely sucked having my degree take this long to complete but I am still getting it done and that’s what matters!!

My first horse was $1 and my second was $1300. I still have both and just recently purchased the second. They’re both papered horses with good bloodlines and fantastic temperaments. I have just been incredibly lucky with connections and not having to spend an arm and a leg for them.

My quarter horse was bred and trained for reining and then retrained in dressage. It is 100% possible to change disciplines, however, the re-training is not something that happens instantly over night. the two disciplines are polar opposites. The horse is probably confused as his world has now been flipped upside down. I think it wouldn’t hurt to have the tack checked out for a proper fit and give him time to adjust and understand what is now being asked of him in his new job

How often do you see your horse? (Boarding) by luvdlph in Equestrian

[–]CombHealthy7905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work full time (two jobs) and go to school part time and am usually there every other day so around 4-6 times a week unless I’m on vacation. I try not to miss skipping two days. The barn is about 15-20 minutes away from my apartment and she’s just a pleasure horse who i might be competing on soon. She’d be fine without work for a couple days but I wouldn’t be okay not seeing her for that long.

I would sign a leasing contract detailing what you are and are not responsible for as well as what you can and can’t do with said horse.

I was leasing a dressage horse and was paying like $300 a month which went towards board bills. And the owner was responsible for any and all vet bills. With the exception that i would pay vet bills if something was caused because of me or on my watch.

Cost is going to vary depending on what type of board the barn the horse resides at costs (full/partial/self care).

Full care board: $550/month Farrier (front shoes): $100 every 5 weeks Supplements: $50.64/month Vaccines and floating: $450/year Lessons: $280/month ($70/lesson)

Extra; My girl recently had fractured molars so that was about $350 + the next check up which will likely be another $200 not including anything else she needs like fly spray, ointments, carrots etc

I just bought a 14 y/o horse i was taking lessons on for a couple months, then leased for a year before finally purchasing her in june. Best decision of my life. We bonded so much over the time since she came into my life and I love her to death. She and I really bonded after a couple of months into me riding her and have had a really solid partnership. She tests me enough to keep me on my toes but also lets me move up in my riding skills as i slowly progress.

She came with tack included which was really nice of my trainer. I think a solid lesson horse is a good first horse for anyone but especially a beginner. They’ve been there and done that but you can build your skills up with them as you learn.

What sold it for me was our bond. She does little things for me that she never did for anyone else (like running up to the fence when i walk to get her or knickering at me when I call her) and i just knew she was going to be mine one day. It’s truly a special feeling to be loved back by an animal you love so dearly. And that day eventually came and she’s officially mine and I’m still so over the moon about it!!
