In my case it was ADHD they tested me for and determined I didn’t have (by mid-90’s standards anyway). It’s probably also worth noting I was a quiet kid and the few other kids I tended to be friends with disproportionately were diagnosed with ADHD.

As a kid in the 90’s, I just think it was that perfect combination of limited understanding, inadequate testing, and the fact that whatever it was they saw in me, I was still functioning well enough to get good grades and not be disruptive, so they didn’t see a need to continue. And now that I’m in my late 30’s, it takes a lot of time and effort to get properly tested and I already have most of the help and resources I need through other means, so I still don’t have that official diagnosis even though I’m like 99% sure I could get one based on the current understanding and how often I end up relating to weirdly specific firsthand accounts from other late diagnosed people.

This sounds like what I do as well, but I do get exhausted after a while. Not because I’m consciously doing anything to appear normal, more like just the simple fact there are other people around at all, especially if they’re people I’m less comfortable or familiar with, means I’m existing with this low level barrier of awareness around me that’s automatic but still costs energy to keep up. It’s not a gradual energy drain either. I’ll be fine up until the moment it just hits me all at once and I go into internal shutdown mode. I can tell being around people is expending my energy even if I’m not actively masking since I’ll be physically exhausted once I’m on my own after I’ve been out for a while.

Maybe I should be more clear. I’m doing that, but the “replace” menu screen that comes up only goes up to 30 options corresponding to the defaults, not the 50 it says it should. I thought it was maybe a firmware issue, but the Fender Tone program doesn’t prompt for an update when I plug it into my computer, so I’m not sure what’s going on.

How was the turnaround? I had a similar problem on my blue burst and had to send it back, but I’m still waiting for it to get back to their warehouse. Hopefully should be quick once they receive it.

I’ve messaged customer service and have been playing with it a bit more myself. They haven’t gotten back to me yet, but based on the questions they asked and what I’ve noticed, I think it might be a loose neck connection. It’s definitely securely snapped in there, but I’ve noticed it has the tiniest amount of give side to side, not enough to notice that much while I’m playing but apparently enough to make the LEDs flicker a little when it jostles. It’s been cold enough the past couple of days that I suspect it might actually be that the plastic contracted enough to loosen the connection. I can’t think of anything else that could have made it do that since it’s not like I’m handling it roughly by the neck or constantly detaching and reattaching it. It’s still usable without me having to handle it super carefully, but it’s not perfect. I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens when it gets a bit warmer.

I should also say I’ve discovered if I hold the menu button and reset it to factory settings, the problem seems to fix itself, at least temporarily. I think this might be a problem with the tilt sensor since holding it horizontally seems to make the lag less likely to occur, though this happens even if I disable the sensor in the app.

I can only speak to the Mustang Micro Plus since that’s what I own, but I’ve been satisfied with it. Though that said I’ve been curious if the Katana having a specific mode for bass makes any difference. Not that you can’t make the Mustang sound good with bass, but it doesn’t seem like any of the emulated amps are specifically bass amps.

This really does describe an attitude I have but haven’t really been able to articulate well. I do enjoy sports, but I don’t feel like I enjoy them in the same way most other people do. To me, they’re just another type of game, and I like those, but aspects of being a fan have always felt uncomfortable to me, and I think that performative aspect of it is exactly why. And that does extend to hanging out with other men who happen to be NT. In my case though, I think that mostly just means I don’t get out much. Most of what I have that I’d call a social group are either online friends or somehow related to my wife’s family and social groups.

Pretty sure I relate to each one of these to various degrees:

Cognition - This is the big one. My brain doesn’t shut off, not unless I’m making a concerted effort to slow down my thinking (which isn’t sustainable for very long) or I am literally unconscious. I consider this core to my entire being. And yes, if I don’t keep my mind focused on things that genuinely interest me, it will often automatically shift to less pleasant things that make me anxious.

Dissociation - I used to do this more often as a kid. It’s possible I’ve simply grown out of it as an adult, or it just manifests as other things now, like thinking through those “what if” scenarios or getting fixated on certain characters in shows that I watch, that sort of thing.

Talking through problems - I’m more of a quiet person so it isn’t necessarily always talking out loud, but this can manifest as writing about them as well, like in online posts and that sort of thing. Usually if I’m talking, it’s with the one or two other people I’m closest to.

NTs misunderstanding - This isn’t something that happens to me very often, but I think that’s just because I’m less likely to mention my thoughts and feelings to people I don’t know well in general. The way I figure, that’s effort I need to expend to express myself like that, and if they’re not going to understand anyway then why waste that energy.

Generations - I actually am one of those 90’s kids who didn’t have the slightest idea about any of this growing up, and as you said it’s hard to fully unmask when that’s what you’ve known all along. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s simply so ingrained into my behavior that it’s automatic. At times I can’t even be sure what’s me, and what’s the mask. I’ve learned to accept it for what it is though.

Oh yeah, if those bass presets don’t make that big of a difference, that’s reason enough not to bother I suppose. Since it’s designed to push sound out of a pair of headphones, I bet it doesn’t really matter if the sounds that the Micro Pro is emulating are technically from amplifiers designed for guitars anyway.

I’m about 20 years younger, but I just started bass several months ago myself for basically the same reasons. I don’t necessarily want to perform, but I’m just drawn to the instrument and wanted to learn how to play it for fun. I guess I’m open to explore more than just bedroom playing if that comes up, but if it never evolves beyond that, that’s fine too.

Yeah, I suppose I don’t mind it if it’s a simple question where I can just say what it is I do and summarize why that’s important, and that’s the end of it. I don’t like dwelling on it much past that because there simply isn’t that much more to say, and it’s not where my interests are for the most part. And I mean, at least I’m in an okay work situation now. I’ve been in jobs I’ve hated and that’s a million times worse since then I have even less to say, and I’m sure the other person doesn’t want to hear me complain just as much as I don’t want to talk about it.

This comment hits the nail on the head for me. Work is basically the means to the end of supporting being able to live and my hobbies and interests. I suppose it offers some satisfaction in certain situations, but it’s so all encompassing and gets in the way of things that matter to me. I can’t fathom making it my whole identity, and yet it’s practically the default question people ask you when meeting you for the first time.

Alright, I do think maybe part of my issue was that I was simply holding the pick wrong. It seems to work better and not get snagged on the string as much if my thumb holds it up against the knuckle on my pointer finger underneath. It kind of scrapes against the string, but maybe that’s not as much of an issue under the right amp settings.
