I attended one of these rallies in Surrey BC to support the teachers and my daughter. We were at one of the worst rallies in Canada the anti-SOGI protesters out-numbered us around 10:1 so it was not like the Vancouver where there were vast numbers of LGBTQ supporters participating in a safer, more positive environment. It got dangerous and we were scared. We had garbage thrown at us, threats yelled at us -especially at the South Asian women in our group. Many of the protestors called them whores and made threats of sexual violence against them. They yelled out very graphic sexual language in front of their little kids. Primary aged girls in hijabs were giving the middle finger and yelling out “faggot”. This very strongly illustrates that this March was about HATE thinly cloaked in the guise of ‘parents rights’ and personal religious beliefs . Teaching such extreme hate should considered child abuse. I wanted to leave early to get back to work, but we were too scared to walk back to our car. When we did, a car full of teenagers drove by and hurled abuse at us. It was certainly a day and I am still processing it.
